Light is foundational for all three monotheistic religions. Mostly studied as a symbol of the divine, light has rarely been addressed archeologically owing to its immaterial and evanescent nature. However, different sources—photometrical, archeological, and textual—point to the possibilities of exploiting light, through objects that transform or redirect it and through references that mention it, and occasionally exalt its signification.
Mosques take light into account in its three dimensions: as a vector of perception, spatial organizer, and significant symbol. In the mosque, light is used both to exalt God and for its functional virtues. The architectural use of light obtains a certain visual comfort, as in any secular construction. Light also helps create a particular space affirming its sacred character, contrasting to natural, raw and uniformly distributed light of secular space. Light can indeed participate in the creation of an immaterial architecture, one that superimposes itself on the concrete architecture of religious edifices.

This paper will present, edit and analyze a Mamluk legal instrument bearing on the guarantee of a third party’s appearance in court. This act, EG 601, was recorded before the Hanafi court of Faiyum in the year 739/1339. Since it involves a third-party guarantee, it is quite interesting for the study of the legal practice of this period, which seems to have devoted a specific formula for the first time to the ḍamān (guarantee) and the kafāla (surety-bond) of a person and of goods, as shown by notarial manuals of the period. Its value is all the greater because Mamluk documents related to this forum of guarantee are rare, and studies of them are even rarer.

The study of the conversions of the Jewish communities of the Arabic peninsula in the medieval era remains an original challenge. Certainly, the mechanisms of the Christianisation of the IVth century are different of the process of adhesion to Islam at the age of the hegira, but it is however possible to identify the articulations of these two process in order to understand the consequences of these conversions, between the community withdrawal and the desertion of the public space. The conversions to Christianity were painful, imposed and revocable; these of Islam, except some definite periods, were chosen, suggested and exclusive.

The MOGADOR project aims at devolopping a new approach to Arabic Natural Language Processing, by designing software tools based on an original description of Arabic grammar that gives top priority to its tool-words (in a redefined definition). These tool-words, that do not derivate from the standard morphological system, trigger off expectations at both syntactic and semantic levels, and thus constrain the sentence either locally or globally. Based on our theoretical and algorithmic work in morphological analysis, electronic dictionaries and proof software in corpora analysis and Information Retrieval, we plan to make available a new generation of filters featuring limited complexity. We propose steps in both theoretical and software fields, with the design of new parsers and software proof tools. These filters could be embedded in search tools boosting them with the results of new linguistic analysis, which have become essential considering the recent boom of the Arabic Web.

Mots-clés : construction verbale – croyance – dogme grammatical – flexion désinentielle – Ibn al-Ḥāǧib – Imlā’ ʿalā al-Kāfiya – impératif – iʿrāb – passif vocalique – pause – phénomène pausal – Quṭrub – Raḍī al-Dīn al-Astarābāḏī – redondance – voyelles brèves
This article aims to show how, on the status of iʿrāb (inflectional ending, case markers as mood markers), Ibn al-Ḥāǧib (d. 646/1249), in the self-commentary he made of his own Kāfiya fī al-naḥw (“The Precis of the syntax”), and even if he explicitly believes in iʿrāb as part of his grammatical tradition, does not any more when explaining some grammatical phenomena. On the contrary he obviously only has in mind the concurrent phenomenon of the inflection ending, namely the pause (waqf), thenceforward put as the only existing at the expense of the inflection ending. That is what shows the analysis of the infraverbal speech of Ibn al-Ḥāǧib which contradicts his explicit verbal declaration of belief in iʿrāb.
Keywords: belief – case markers – grammatical dogma – Ibn al-Ḥāǧib – Imlā’ ʿalā al-Kāfiya – imperative – inflectional ending – iʿrāb – mood markers – pausal form – pause – Quṭrub – Raḍī al-Dīn al-Astarābāḏī – redundancy – short vowels – verb construction – vocalic passive- Manuel Sartori ( : 081920164)

The present study attempts to explore the internal characteristics of the treasury registers sent to the Ottoman Sultan in the second half of the twelfth century H. which are currently kept in the National Archives of Egypt. The registers, dating back to the period between 5 Rabīʿ II 1154 H. and 6 Šāʿbān 1181 H., give a detailed view of the procedures of holding al-Dīwān al-ʿālī (the administrative body in Egypt under the Ottoman rule). During the meeting, revenues are handed to the treasury Sirdar (the military official in charge of the treasury) who in turn sends them to the Ottoman Sultan. Members of the Dīwān include the Dīwān high officials, the Rūznāmǧī (the official in charge of registering the treasury revenues), the Ottoman Pasha (the Ottoman ruler of Egypt) who has to send the registers detailing the gross revenues calculated in Egyptian sacks (each equivalent to 2500 Egyptian silver coins), the expenses and the remainder to be sent whether in cash or Buqǧas (small bundles) or receipts. The Sirdar hands in the registers to the Ottoman Sultan and brings what confirms its being handed in. The study also includes a sample document.

The following article aims to publish a very unique offering scene in the Temple of Kom Ombo. Ptolemy VIII offers the hieroglyphic sign iit to Haroeris. The Eye of Horus is inside this iit-sign. The scene is located in the middle of the north wall in the inner hypostyle. The iit-sign represents a most famous knife of Haroeris, with which he fights the enemies of his father. On the other side, the word iit is considered as a name of Letopolis, the most closed town for Haroeris near the Delta. Also it could be a symbolism for the coming back of the lion-goddess in the legend of Onuris.

A Table-Leg Decorated with a Statue of a Boxer in Cairo
This article is dealing with an unpublished sculpture in the Cairo Egyptian Museum. The sculpture is carved in black basalt and has no authenticated provenance. The object is a table support monopodium, decorated with a boxer. The subject is very rare in Roman Egypt, but finds good testimonies from papyri about athletics and gymnasia games. The new monopodium is perhaps the second known example in the Roman Empire with such a decorative theme. It adds a very valuable model to a small collection of figurative monopodia from Egypt. This kind of object comes most likely from luxurious roman houses or villae in Egypt.
