Le Kitāb al-Iꜥlām wa-tabyīn fī ḫurūǧ al-Faranǧ al-malāꜥīn ꜥalā bilād al-muslimīn est rédigé, au début du x^e/xvi^e siècle, par un historien inconnu, Aḥmad b. ꜥAlī al-Ḥarīrī, qui vivait probablement dans les montagnes libanaises proches de Damas. Abbès Zouache propose une édition critique et une traduction en français de ce texte, qui montre que plusieurs siècles encore après la conquête par les Mamelouks de Saint-Jean-d’Acre, en 1291, et la disparition du royaume de Jérusalem, la croisade était un fait de mémoire.

The Kitāb al-Iꜥlām wa-tabyīn fī ḫurūǧ al-Faranǧ al-malāꜥīn ꜥalā bilād al-muslimīn is written at the beginning of the 10th/16th century by an unknown historian, Aḥmad b. ꜥAlī al-Ḥarīrī, who probably lived in the Lebanese mountains near Damascus. Abbès Zouache offers a critical edition and a french translation of this text, which shows that several centuries after the conquest by the Mamluks of Saint-Jean-d’Acre, in 1291, and the disappearance of the kingdom of Jerusalem, the crusade was a fact of memory.

«مهذِّب الطّالبين إلى قبور الصّالحين» لابن الجبّاس (ت بعد 736 هـ/1336 م) هو الكتاب الوحيد الذي صُنِّف على الطبقات من بين كلّ كتب الزيارة التي وصلت إلينا.

تعتمد هذه النشرة النقدية على نسخة مخطوطة نادرة، كُتبت في مصر وكانت في ملك شهاب الدِّين بن العجمي المؤرّخ والزّائر (ت1086هـ/ 1675م)، وهو الذي رمَّمها، ولا نعلم على وجه التحديد متى انتقلت إلى الزاوية الناصرية جنوب شرق المغرب الأقصى.

Muhaḏḏib al-ṭālibīn īlā qubūr al-ṣāliḥīn (L’éducateur de ceux qui recherchent les tombeaux des pieux) d’Ibn al-Ǧabbās (m. après 736/1336) est le seul ouvrage traitant des visites aux tombeaux qui soit composé suivant le critère chronologique de la succession des générations (al-ṭabaqāt).

Cette édition critique est basée sur un manuscrit rare écrit en Égypte et restauré par l'historien Šihāb al-Dīn b. al-ʿAǧamī, (m. 1086/1675) qui en était le propriétaire. Nous ignorons, en revanche, à quelle date précise il a été transmis à al-Zāwiya al-Nāṣiriyya, au sud-est du Maroc.

Unique among the extant works on visiting tombs, the Muhaḏḏib al-ṭālibīn ilā qubūr al-ṣāliḥīn (The Educator for Seekers of Tombs of the Pious), by Ibn al-Ǧabbās (d. after 736/1336) is the only book that is organised by generations (ṭabaqāt).  This critical edition is based on a rare manuscript copied in Egypt and restored by Šihāb al-Dīn b. al-ʿAǧamīʿ, the historian and visitor (d. 1086/1675) who owned it. We do not know precisely when it was moved to al-Zāwiya al-Nāṣiriyya, in southeastern Morocco.

«الكواكب السَّيَّارة في ترتيب الزِّيارة» لابن الزَّيَّات أهم كتب الزِّيارات على الإطلاق وأكثرها شمولا، لأن مؤلفه استفاد من تجارِب شيوخ الزِّيارة السّابقين له، مثل موفق الدّين بن عثمان الشَّارعي (ت ٦١٥هـ/١٢١٨م) وابن النَّاسخ (ت بعد ٦٩٦ هـ/١٢٩٧ م) وابن الجبَّاس (ت بعد ٧٣٦ هـ/١٣٣٦ م)، فضلا عن أنه كتبه بعد ما يزيد عن سبعة قرون ونصف من إنشاء القرافة الأولى، أي بعد أن تعرّضت المدينة  التاريخية للكثير من التَّغيّر الطُّبوغرافي وزادت فيها الخِطط والآثار والمباني وزاد عدد من دفن فيها من الأولياء والعلماء والأشراف والقضاة والحكَّام، وقد سجّل لنا ذلك كلّه.

ما بين يدي القارئ هو نشرة نقدية اعتمدت على عددٍ من النسخ الخطية، مقارِنةً إيّاها بكتب الزيارة الأخرى، السابقة لهذا النص أو التالية له، وهي بذلك تتميز عما سبقها من نشرات، كنشرة أحمد زكي باشا المطبوعة ببولاق سنة 1907 م.

Al-Kawākib al-sayyāra fī tartīb al-ziyāra (Les planètes en orbite pour l’organisation des visites) d’Ibn al-Zayyāt est incontestablement l’ouvrage de visites aux tombeaux le plus important et le plus complet. Son auteur a tiré bénéfice de l’expérience et des écrits de ses prédécesseurs, tels Muwaffaq al-Dīn ibn ʿUṯmān al-Šāriʿī (m. 615/1218), Ibn al-Nāsiḫ (m. après 696/1297) et Ibn al-Ǧabbās (m. après 736/1336). En outre, il a été rédigé plus de sept siècles et demi après la fondation du premier cimetière de la qarāfa ; durant cette période, cette « cité » a connu de nombreux changements topographiques, plusieurs monuments et constructions y ont été édifiés et elle a accueilli la sépulture d’un grand nombre de saints, de savants, de descendants du Prophète, de juges et de gouvernants.

Ce livre est une édition critique basée sur un certain nombre de manuscrits, qu’elle confronte aux autres livres de visites, qu’ils soient antérieurs ou ultérieurs. Elle se distingue ainsi des éditions précédentes, comme, par exemple, celle de Aḥmad Zakī Pacha imprimée à Bulaq en 1907.

Ibn al-Zayyāt’s al-Kawākib al-sayyāra fī tartīb al-ziyāra (Orbiting Planets for Organising Visits) is certainly the most comprehensive and systematic, and overall most important work on visiting tombs. Its author wrote his work more than seven and a half centuries after the foundation of the first cemetery of the qarāfa.  He built on the experience of his predecessors, such as Muwaffaq al-Dīn ibn ʿUṯmān al-Šāriʿī (d. 615/1218), Ibn al-Nāsiḫ (d. after 696/1297), and Ibn al-Ǧabbās (d. after 736/1336). During this period, this “city” underwent many topographical changes and witnessed the addition of many sections, buildings, and monuments. An increasing number of saints, scholars, descendants of the Prophet, judges and rulers were buried there. Ibn al-Zayyāt recorded all this for us.

This volume is a critical edition based on a number of manuscript copies, which it puts in dialogue with other earlier and later visit books. It thus stands apart from previous editions, such as that of Aḥmad Zakī Pasha printed in Bulaq in 1907.

يُعَـدُّ كِتَابُ «زُبْدَة كَشْفِ المـَمَالِك وبَيَان الطُّــرُقِ والمـَسَالِك» لخـَــلِيل بن شَاهِين الظَّاهِرِي أحَد الكُتُب التي تُسَجِّلُ نُظُمَ ورُسُومَ دَوْلَة سَلَاطِين المـَمَالِيك في مِصْــر، بغَرْض أنْ تكون مَرْجِعًا لعُمَّال الدَّوْلَة وللمُهْتَمِّين بالمَسَائِل السِّيَاسِيَة والدِّبْلُومَاسِيَّة. حيث تطَلَّبَت النُّظُمُ الإدَارِيَّة والرُّسُومُ الجـَدِيدَة التي أدْخَلَها نِظَامُ دَوْلَة سَلَاطِين المَمَالِيك وُجُودَ مُؤَلَّفَات تُسَجِّلُ هذه التَّغْييرَات التي اسْتَحْدَثَهَا النِّظَامُ الجـَدِيد، مثل كِتَاب «التَّعْرِيف بالمـُصْطَلَح الشَّرِيف» لابن فَضْلِ الله العُمَرِي وكِتَاب «تَثْقِيف التَّعْرِيف بالمـُصْطَلَح الشَّرِيف» لابن نَاظِر الجـَيْش ثم كِتَاب «صُبْح الأعْشَى في صِنَاعَة الإنْشَا» للقَلْقَشَنْدِي.

ومُؤَلِّفَ الكِتَاب أحَدُ رِجَال الدَّوْلَة المَمْلُوكِيَّة ويَنْتَسِبُ إلى طَبَقَة أوْلاد النَّاس (الجِيل الثَّانِـي من المَمَالِيك) وشَغَلَ العَدِيدَ من المنَاصِب العُلْيَا بها بين نِيَابَة السَّلْطَنَة والوَزَارَة  وغيرها من المَنَاصِب. فكَتَبَ  كِتابَه – وعلى الأخَصّ الأبْوَاب ذات الصِّلَة بنُظُمِ ورُسُومِ دَوْلَة سَلَاطِين المَمالِيك – مُسْتَفِيدًا من مَنَاصِبِه المـُــتَعَدِّدَة ومن تَجْرِبَتِه العَمَلِيَّة ومن الوَثَائِق الحـُــكُومِيَّة التي أُتِيحَ له الاطِّلَاعُ عَلَيْهَا.

Zubdat Kašf al-Mamālik wa bayān al-ṭuruq wa-l-masālik de Ḫalil b. Šāhīn al-Ẓāhirī est un des ouvrages qui recensent les institutions et les cérémonials du sultanat mamelouk en Égypte dans le but de servir de référence aux employés de l’État et à ceux qui s’intéressent aux questions politiques et diplomatiques. Les nouvelles réglementations administratives et les nouveaux décrets introduits par le sultanat mamelouk ont nécessité l’existence d’ouvrages qui rendent compte de ces changements introduits par le nouveau régime, tels que l’ouvrage d'Ibn Faḍl Allāh al-ʿUmarī, al-Taʿrīf bi-l-muṣṭalaḥ al-šarīf, celui d’Ibn Nāẓir al-ǧayš Taṯqīf al-taʿrīf bi-l-muṣṭalaḥ al-šarīf, ensuite celui d’al-QalqašandīṢubḥ al-aʿšā fī ṣināʿat al-inšā.

L’auteur du présent ouvrage est un homme d’État de l’époque mamelouke qui appartient à la classe des awlād al-nās (la deuxième génération des mamelouks). Il a occupé de nombreux postes de haut rang au sein de l’État, entre le sultanat adjoint, le ministère et d’autres postes. Il a rédigé son livre – en particulier les chapitres relatifs aux institutions et cérémonials du sultanat mamelouk – en s’appuyant sur ses multiples postes, son expérience pratique et les documents gouvernementaux auxquels il avait accès.

Les recherches publiées dans ce livre portent sur les représentations et les symboliques de la guerre et de la paix dans le monde arabe sur la longue durée. Les auteurs sont spécialistes de différentes disciplines (sociologie, anthropologie, histoire, études linguistiques et littéraires). Ils accordent une attention particulière à la langue de leurs corpus, depuis des textes fondateurs, Coran ou hadiths, en passant par les sources classiques de l’historien (les textes des auteurs du patrimoine classique arabe), jusqu’aux productions qui nous sont contemporaines, des textes militants aux œuvres de fiction.

The studies published in this book focus on representations and symbolics of war and peace in the Arab World over the long term. The authors are specialists in various disciplines (sociology, anthropology, history, linguistic and literary studies). They pay particular attention to the language of their corpus, from the founding texts, Koran or hadiths, through the historian’s classical sources (texts by authors of the classical Arab heritage), up to contemporary productions, from militant texts to works of fiction.

تتناول الأبحاث المنشورة في هذا الكتاب تصاوير ورمزيات الحرب والسلام في العالم العربي على المدى الطويل. وهي لمتخصصين في عدد من المجالات البحثية (الاجتماع والأنثروبولوجيا والتاريخ والدراسات اللغوية والأدبية)؛ حيث يهتم هؤلاء بالأخص بلغة نصوصهم الأصلية، بدءًا  بالنصوص المؤسسة، القرآن والحديث، مرورًا بالمصادر التقليدية للمؤرخ (نصوص مؤلفي التراث العربي)، ووصولًا إلى الكتابات المعاصرة، من نصوص أدب النضال حتى الأعمال الخيالية.

يُعدُّ كتاب «الدُّرّ المنظَّم في زيارةِ الجبل المقطَّم» المعروف بـ «مُرشِد الزوَّار إلى قبورِ الأبْرارِ»، لموفَّق الدِّين بن عثمان الشَّارعي ـ أقدمُ نصٍّ تُراثيٍّ وصل إلينا من نصوص زيارات مصر والقاهرة حتى الآن.
وكانت أكبر مشاكل هذا الكتاب عَبر التَّاريخ هي احتواء أغلب نُسَخِه الخطيَّة على زياداتٍ كثيرة، طرأت عليه على مدار القرون المنقضية، مِن القرن السَّابع حتى القرن العاشـر الهجريين تقريبًا، حيث ورَّثه ابن عثمان لعائلته التي كان أغلبُهم يعملون شيوخًا للزِّيارة، فتجرّأوا عليه وزادوا فيه زياداتٍ ليست من كلام ابن عثمان.
إلَّا أنَّ هذه النَّشْرة  ـ التي بين يديك ـ قد احتوت على النصِّ الأصليِّ للكتاب فقط، بعد أن فطِن محقِّقُها إلى هذا الأمرِ، واسْتَبْعَد كلَّ النُّسَخ الخطيَّة التي وقعت في يد مشايخ الزِّيارة مِن العائلة، فصارت نشرةً نقديَّة بالمعنى العِلْميِّ المعروف.              

Le livre al-Durr al-munaẓẓam ilā ziyārat al-ǧabal al-Muqaṭṭam (Les perles organisées pour la visite de la montagne du Muqaṭṭam), également connu sous le titre de Muršid al-zuwwār ilā qubūr al-abrār (Le guide des visiteurs des tombes des justes), par Muwaffaq al-Dīn b. ʿUṯmān al-Šāriʿī est le plus ancien traité de ziyāra (visite dévotionnelle aux tombes et mausolées) au Caire et en Égypte qui nous soit parvenu.

La principale difficulté liée à la transmission de ce texte est que la plupart des manuscrits contiennent de nombreux ajouts, qui ont probablement été insérés entre le septième et le dixième siècle de l'Hégire. En effet, Ibn ʿUṯmān a transmis son texte à sa famille, dont la plupart étaient des šuyūḫ organisant des ziyārāt, et ils ont pris l'initiative d'ajouter des ziyārāt qui ne figuraient pas dans le texte d'Ibn ʿUṯmān.

La présente édition ne contient que le texte original, après que l'éditeur a systématiquement rejeté les manuscrits tombés entre les mains des šuyūḫ de la famille d'Ibn ʿUṯmān qui dirigeaient les ziyārāt, ce qui en fait une véritable édition scientifique.

The book al-Durr al-munaẓẓam fī ziyārat al-ǧabal al-Muqaṭṭam, also known as Muršid al-zuwwār ilā qubūr al-abrār, by Muwaffaq al-Dīn b. ʿUṯmān al-Šāriʿī, is the oldest treatise of ziyāra (devotional visit to tombs and mausolea) to Cairo and Egypt that has reached us.

The main difficulty linked to the transmission of this text is that most manuscripts contain many additions, which were probably added from the seventh till the tenth century AH. Indeed, Ibn ʿUṯmān handed his text over to his family, most of whom were šuyūḫ organizing ziyārāt, and they took the initiative to add ziyārāt that were not in Ibn ʿUṯmān’s text.

This present edition only contains the original text, after the editor systematically rejected the manuscripts that fell into the hands of šuyūḫ from Ibn ʿUṯmān’s family who were leading ziyārāt, which makes it a proper scientific edition.

يُعتبر كتاب ابن النَّاسخ «مصباح الدَّيَاجي» مِن أهم وأقدم النُّصوص التي أُلِّفت في موضوع زيارات مصر والقاهرة، حيث جاء في المرتبة الثانية بعد كتاب ابن عثمان «الدُّر المنظَّم في زيارة الجبل المقطَّم» مِن حيث الترتيب التاريخي.
يَزعُم مؤلِّفُه أنَّه صحَّح الكثير مِنَ الأخطاء التي وردت عند ابن عثمان في تاريخِه سابق الذِّكر، فضلًا على ذلك أنَّه زاد كثيرًا في عدد الشَّخصيات الواردة في كتابه عن كتاب ابن عثمان الذي لم يتعدَّ 200 شخصية.
كما يُعتبر كتاب ابن النَّاسخ مصدرًا مهمًا لكلِّ من كتب في طوبوغرافية مُدن الموتى أو زيارات مصر والقاهرة، مثل كتاب ابن الزيَّات «الكواكب السيَّارة في ترتيب الزيارة»، وكتاب السخَاوي «تُحفة الأحباب وبُغية الطلَّاب في الخِطط والمزارات والتراجِم والبِقاع المباركات» والشُّعيبي في كتابه «مَن دُفِن بمصر القاهرة من المحدِّثين والعلماء والأولياء من الرجال والنساء».
كان السَّبب والغاية في تأليف هذا الكتاب هو التقرُّب والتودُّد لوزير العصر الصاحب تاج الدين أبي عبد الله محمَّد بن محمَّد المعروف بـ«ابن حِنَّا»؛ وذلك لما أُشيع عن الأخير حبَّهُ للفقراء والعلماء، فكان قبسًا من جدِّه الوزير الصاحب بهاء الدِّين عليِّ المتوفى سنة 677هـ/1278م الذي بنى التربة البهائية في حياتِه؛ لكي يستقطبَ إليها مَن يَنْتَقل مِن هؤلاء؛ تمهيدًا لكي يكونوا على القُرْب منه في الدار الآخرة، غير أنَّه كان مفتونًا كجدِّه بزيارة مَن دُفن في هذه الأماكن المباركة من القرافتين والجبل المقطم؛ فلمَّا عَرف ابن النّاسخ ذلك منه ألَّف هذا الكتاب؛ كي يتقرَّب به إليه.
مما يُميِّز هذا الكتاب أنَّه اعتمدَ على الكثير مِن المصادر؛ فنجده اعتمدَ على مصادرَ معروفة لدينا، ووصلتنا بالفعل، ولكن الأهم أنَّه اعتمد على مصادر مجهولة لنا؛ لم نعرف عنها أدنى معلومة، أو نعرف عنها معلومات لكنها لم تصلنا، ممَّا أعطى للكتاب قيمة عالية في فنِّ الطوبوغرافيا والخطط بشكلٍ عام، وزيارات مصر والقاهرة بشكلٍ خاص. 

One of the first and most important travel accounts written about Egypt and Cairo is Ibn al-Nāsiḫ’s Miṣbāḥ al-Dayāǧī, which ranks only second after Ibn ʿUṯmān’s al-Durr al-munaẓẓam fī ziyārat al-ǧabal al-Muqaṭṭam historically.

In it, Ibn al-Nāsiḫ claims that he corrected many of the errors found in Ibn ʿUṯmān’s book and that he greatly increased the number of people he mentioned, in comparison with the only two hundred names found in al-Durr al-munaẓẓam.

The book of Ibn al-Nāsiḫ was also an important source for later authors who wrote on the topography of the cemeteries in particular, and on the description of Cairo and Egypt in general.

If some of the sources that he used were already known to us and are available today, others are still completely unknown, or did not reach us. This makes the Miṣbāḥ al-Dayāǧī an invaluable source for the study of topography in general, and of the cemeteries of Egypt and Cairo in particular.

« Quiconque aime passionnément, reste chaste et meurt, trépasse en martyr. » Muġulṭāy (m. 762/1361) fonde son Précis des martyrs de l’amour sur ce hadith apocryphe qui, forgé au III^e/IX^e siècle, lui permet d’inclure dans la sphère de l’islam une passion amoureuse mortifère et profane envers une créature et de la transformer en quête de perfectionnement spirituel sous l’égide du ǧihād. La thèse était audacieuse : le traité fut censuré et interdit à la vente sur les marchés du Caire. Monica Balda-Tillier livre ici une puissante reconstruction du cadre conceptuel qui présida à la rédaction du traité de Muġulṭāy. Mettant en lumière les stratégies argumentatives et narratives adoptées pour défendre le martyre d’amour contre ses détracteurs, elle propose une minutieuse enquête sur les ressorts d’une œuvre qui conduisit son auteur en prison.

“Whoever loves passionately remains chaste and dies, dies a martyr”. Muġulṭāy (d. 762/1361) bases The Clear and Eloquent on Those Lovers Who Became Martyrs on this apocryphal hadith, which was forged in the 3rd/9th century. It enables him to include in the sphere of Islam a passionate, deadly and profane love for a creature and therefore to transform it into a quest for spiritual perfection under the aegis of ǧihād. This was a daring thesis and the treatise was censored and banned from sale in the markets of Cairo. In this essay, Monica Balda-Tillier provides a powerful reconstruction of the conceptual framework that led to the writing of Muġulṭāy’s treatise. By highlighting the strategies of argument and narrative adopted by the author to defend the martyrdom of love against its detractors, she conducts a meticulous investigation into the contents of a work that led its author to prison.

يقدم هذا العمل نشر مجموعة وثائق الصرة الشريفة المرسلة من خزينة مصر إلى أهالي الحرمين الشريفين خلال العصر العثماني وحكم أسرة محمد علي باشا بسجلات الديوان العالي بدار الوثائق القومية بالقاهرة، وتواريخ هـذه الوثائـق من 1154 هـ / 1741 م إلى 1273هـ / 1857 م. وأهميـة هذه المجموعة فيما تقدمه من تفاصيل نقدية من المبالغ التي كان من المقرر إرسالها سنويًا لإنفاقها على أهالي مكة والمدينة  خلال انعقاد مجلس الديوان العالي موضحًا إجراءات تسليم هذه المبالغ إلى أمير الحج المسؤول عن إرسال نقدية الصرة وأوجه إنفاقها والقيمة النقدية لكل وجه من أوجه الإنفاق، وتـتـناول الدراسـة العلاقـات المصريـة الحجازيـة خلال العصر العثماني والديوان العالي، ودراسة لوثائق الصرة ومجموعة من الجداول التي توضح إجمالي نقدية الصرة والمخصصات التفصيلية لعناصر أوجه صرف الصرة وقيمتها النقدية، ونقدية غلال الصرة، والعناصر التفصيلية لأوقاف الحرميـن الشـريفيـن. كما تناولت الجداول أسماء الشخصيات المذكورة بالوثائق، وتشمل الدراسة  كشاف الأعلام وكشاف بالوظائف ولوحات الوثائق المنشورة.

This work, in arabic, deals with the publication of documents relating to al-ṣurra al-šarīfa, sent from the treasury of Egypt to the inhabitants of the Holy Places during the Ottoman era, and during the reign of the family of Muḥammad ʿAlī Pasha. These documents, dated from 1154/1741 to 1273/1857, belong to the archives of the High Court at the National archives in Cairo . The importance of these documents lies in the monetary details they provide about the sums that the court decided to send annually, to the inhabitants of Mecca and Medina. These documents also illustrate the procedures for remitting these sums to the prince of the pilgrimage, responsible for sending these monies, the designation of the objects of expenditure, and finally the determination of the monetary value of each aspect of expenditure.

اعتمادًا على اثني عشر مخطوطًا، يقدم ديوان «تُرجُمَـان الأَسـرَار» تحقيـقًا نقديـًا لجميـع قصـائـد محمد بـن أبي الحسن البكري الصديقي التي وصلتنا، ويعتبر محمد البكري (930-994/1524-1586) أحد أعلام مصر في الفقه والتصوف والأدب خلال القرن السادس عشر. ويتبع التحقيق أسلوبًا شموليًا نقديًا، حيث يضم الديوان القصائد مع نسخها وقراءاتها المختلفة. كان محمد البكري من أهم أدباء عصره، وكانت أشعاره تنتمي إلى مدرسة أدبية تستمد خصائصها من أعمال سابقيه من كبار الشعراء المتصوّفة كابن العربي وابن الفارض والبوصيري وعلي وفا. وإضافة إلى القيمة الأدبية لهذه القصائد فهي مصدر هام لدراسة الفكر الصوفي وممارساته في مصر العثمانية، فهي تتناول العديد من الموضوعات الصوفية كأحوال الأولياء وطقوس القهوة والفخر بالنسب الشريف وقضية وحدة الوجود المنسوبة لابن عربي والتي أثارت الكثير من الجدل. كما قام المحققان بإضافة مقدمة نقدية باللغتين الإنجليزية والعربية وملحقًا يضم مطالع القصائد والمخطوطات التي وردت فيها، وسيجد دارسي الأدب العربي والتصوّف والتاريخ الفكري العثماني في هذا الكتاب ما يثير اهتمامهم.

Based on a study of twelve Arabic manuscripts, The Interpreter of Secrets is a critical edition of the entire surviving corpus of the poetry of Muḥammad ibn Abī al-Hasan al-Bakrī (930-994/1524-1586), a leading jurist, Sufi, and literary figure in sixteenth-century Cairo. The texts of the poems are accompanied by a critical apparatus including all of the plausible variant readings and alternative versions of the poems. Al-Bakrī was a major literary figure, and his Sufi poetry belongs to a tradition that draws on the work of poets such as Ibn al-Fāriḍ, Ibn al-ʿArabī, al-Būṣīrī, and ʿAlī Wafā. In addition to their literary value, the poems are an important source for the study of Sufi theology and practice in Ottoman Egypt, including to such topics as the cult of the saints, the use of coffee for ritual purposes, the controversial appropriation of Ibn al-ʿArabī’s monist theology, and the establishment of sacred lineages. The editors have also included short Arabic and English introductions and an appendix that identifies the manuscript sources for each poem. This book will be of interest to students of Arabic literature, Sufism, and Ottoman intellectual history.
