IFAO

Following the success of the first edition of this ‘Image Academy’ organised in 2024, the aim of this second edition is to bring together a dozen young researchers in Egyptology for a week at the Institute, to train them in art historical methods. The planned repertoire will cover all forms of media (reliefs, decorated vases, statues, ornate objects, wall paintings, etc.) from the Predynastic period to the Roman period. The aim is to familiarise young researchers, in both concrete and theoretical terms, with the approach to Egyptian art and images in general. The purpose is to train the eye, to explore the avenues available to us in an attempt to understand the images and to transmit a scientific discourse both to the academic community and to a wider public.

Over this five-day course, we will alternate workshops on different aspects of research (describing and documenting a work of art, introduction to image manipulation software, methods of analysing iconography and style, reflection on the material support of the work of art, recontextualisation of images, the question of interpretation, portraiture and the identification of forgeries) and practical work (writing labels for museums or exhibitions, notes for catalogues, introduction to oral presentations). These assignments will also provide an opportunity to work on actual archaeological material from the collections held at the Ifao.

This year they will be supervised by Simon Connor and Axelle Brémont (Ifao), and accompanied by Gabriele Pieke (Reiss-Engelhorn Museen, Mannheim).

The course will be conducted in English. It is aimed at young researchers of all nationalities (Egyptian, French and others), either master or doctoral students. Priority will be given to anyone preparing a thesis (Master or Doctorate) on iconographic material. It will last five full days (from Monday morning to Friday evening) and may be extended by a site visit at the weekend.

Candidates will be accommodated on site at the Ifao on the academy's budget for 7 nights (from Sunday 14th to Saturday 20th). Lunch meals will also be provided. Other expenses, including transport, will be at the discretion of the participants or their own institution.

Après le succès de la première édition de cette « Académie de l'image » organisée en 2024, l'objectif de cette seconde édition est de réunir une dizaine de jeunes chercheurs en égyptologie pendant une semaine à l'Institut, afin de les former aux méthodes de l'histoire de l'art. Le répertoire prévu couvrira tous les types de supports (reliefs, vases décorés, statues, objets ornés, peintures murales, etc.) de la période prédynastique à la période romaine. L'objectif est de familiariser les jeunes chercheurs, de manière concrète et théorique, avec l'approche de l'art égyptien et de l'image en général. Il s'agit de former le regard, d'explorer les pistes qui s'offrent à nous pour tenter de comprendre les images et de transmettre un discours scientifique tant à la communauté académique qu'à un public plus large.

Au cours de cette formation de cinq jours, nous alternerons des ateliers sur différents aspects de la recherche (description et documentation d'une œuvre d'art, initiation aux logiciels de manipulation d'images, méthodes d'analyse de l'iconographie et du style, réflexion sur le support matériel de l'œuvre d'art, recontextualisation des images, question de l'interprétation, portrait et identification des faux) et des travaux pratiques (rédaction d'étiquettes pour des musées ou des expositions, notes pour des catalogues, initiation à la présentation orale). Ces travaux seront également l'occasion de travailler sur du matériel archéologique réel provenant des collections conservées à l'Ifao.

Cette année, ils seront encadrés par Simon Connor et Axelle Brémont (Ifao), accompagnés par Gabriele Pieke (Reiss-Engelhorn Museen, Mannheim).

Le cours se déroulera en anglais. Il s'adresse aux jeunes chercheurs de toutes nationalités (égyptiens, français et autres), étudiants de master ou en doctorat. Une priorité sera accordée à tous ceux qui préparent une thèse (Master ou Doctorat) portant sur du matériel iconographique. Le stage durera cinq jours pleins (du lundi matin au vendredi soir) et pourra être prolongé par une visite de site le week-end.
