This bilingual English/Arabic manual is intended to accompany the training of future ceramic specialists in the Arab world. Resulting from the collaboration of four major institutions of French archaeology abroad: the Section française de la direction des Antiquités du Soudan (Sfdas), the Institut français d’archéologie orientale (Ifao), the Institut français du Proche-Orient (Ifpo) and the Centre français de recherche de la péninsule Arabique (Cefrepa), it draws on the recent work of specialists from the Nile Valley, the Near East and the Arabian Peninsula to shed light on the theoretical reflections that have enriched ceramic studies in recent decades. Providing a genuine field tool, this volume is nonetheless a skilfully illustrated collection of the contribution of ceramic studies to the understanding of human history.

Ce manuel bilingue anglais/arabe est destiné à accompagner la formation des futurs céramologues du monde arabe. Fruit de la collaboration de quatre institutions majeures de l’archéologie française à l’étranger ‑ la Section française de la direction des Antiquités du Soudan (Sfdas), l’Institut français d’archéologie orientale (Ifao), l’Institut français du Proche-Orient (IFPO), et le Centre français de recherche de la péninsule Arabique (Cefrepa) ­, il s’appuie sur les travaux récents des spécialistes de la vallée du Nil, du Proche-Orient et de la péninsule Arabique pour éclairer les réflexions théoriques dont la céramologie s’est enrichie ces dernières décennies. Véritable outil de terrain, ce volume n’en est pas moins un recueil savamment illustré de l’apport de la céramologie à la compréhension de l’histoire humaine.

يهدف هذا الدليل الذي أعِدّ باللغتين الإنجليزية والعربية إلى مواكبة ودعم تدريب الراغبين في التخصّص في مجال الفخار في العالم العربي، وهو نتاج وحصيلة تعاون أربع مؤسسات فرنسية رئيسية خارجية تعمل في مجال الآثار: الوحدة الفرنسية بالهيئة القومية للآثار والمتاحف السودانية (Sfdas)، والمعهد الفرنسي للآثار الشرقية (Ifao)، والمعهد الفرنسي للشرق القريب (Ifpo)، والمركز الفرنسي للأبحاث في شبه الجزيرة العربية (Cefrepa)، ويُعدّ هذا الدليل ثمرة عمل المتخصّصين في مجال الفخار من مناطق وادي النيل والشرق الأدنى وشبه الجزيرة العربية عبر إلقاء الضوء على المناهج النظرية التي أثرَت دراسات الفخار في العقود الأخيرة. وبالرغم من كَون هذا الدليل أداة ميدانية حقيقية، فهو يشكّل دراسة متكاملة تشير إلى دور دراسات الفخار في فهم التاريخ البشري.
