La représentation picturale du bain apparaît de manière sporadique au fil des siècles, d’abord dans la peinture murale omeyyade (VIIIe siècle), puis à partir du XIVe siècle, dans les peintures de manuscrits persans et turcs. Ces représentations se déclinent en deux principaux groupes : en intérieur le plus souvent, sous la forme d’une architecture en coupe disposée en plusieurs registres ou, plus rarement, en extérieur – le bâtiment étant figuré dans sa globalité. Au-delà du témoignage architectural, l’importance du texte que la peinture accompagne s’avère capitale. Ces représentations sont liées à la littérature soufie et porteuses d’une signification mystique, qui transcende le témoignage historico-anthropologique.

Painted representation of bath occurs sporadically over the centuries: in the mural paintings of the Umayyad period in the 18th century, and, from the 14th century, in the Persian and Turkish manuscripts. These paintings fall into two main groups: firstly and most often, an interior view of the building in multiple registers, secondly, an exterior view of the entire building. Beyond the architectural evidence, the importance of the text illustrated is crucial. These representations are related to Sufi literature and have a mystical significance that transcends the historical and anthropological evidence.
