Certains hammams construits ou restaurés à Damas à l’époque ottomane sont liés à des gouverneurs de la province – gouverneurs envoyés par Istanbul aux XVIe et XVIIe siècles ou gouverneurs d’origine locale au XVIIIe siècle – qui les ont intégrés à des fondations (waqf), soit au profit d’institutions religieuses, soit au profit de certains membres de leurs familles. Cet article examine la construction, la gestion et la restauration de ces hammams à travers les actes juridiques consignés dans les registres des tribunaux de Damas. Il décrit leur configuration architecturale et évoque leur sort aux XIXe et XXe siècles.

Some hammams built or restored in Damascus during the Ottoman period were connected with provincial governors – whether sent from Istanbul in the 16th and 17th centuries or of local origin in the 18th century – who incorporated them into foundations (waqf) for the benefit of religious institutions or for the benefit of some members of their families. This paper examines the construction, the management and the restoration of these hammams through the study of the court records of Damascus. It describes their architectural configuration and traces their history in the 19th and 20th centuries.
