Une équipe internationale et interdisciplinaire mène des recherches à Baalbek depuis 2001, dont l’objectif est d’étudier le développement global de la ville depuis ses origines préhistoriques jusqu’à l’époque ottomane. Parmi les travaux figurent l’exploration systématique de la zone dite de « Bustan el-Khan », où deux bâtiments publics sont datés de l’époque impériale – un bain romain et une salle de banquet. Les grands bains romains de Baalbek partagent de nombreuses caractéristiques avec les thermes de Rome et d’autres villes de l’Empire, en particulier un strict plan axial. Mais une modification tardive a transformé l’organisation architecturale de l’édifice en profondeur, peut-être sous l’influence de pratiques locales. Cet article vise à mettre en évidence l’organisation et le développement du bain de Baalbek à l’époque romaine. Fondé sur des recherches récentes, il se concentre sur l’étude de la première phase et propose des explications possibles de la conversion tardive.

An international and interdisciplinary team is conducting research in Baalbek since 2001, to investigate the overall development of the city from its prehistoric origins up to the Ottoman era. Part of the program is the systematic exploration of the “Bustan el-Khan” area where two public buildings are dated back to the Roman Imperial period – a Roman bath and a banquet hall. The large-scale Roman bath at Baalbek shares many features with thermae of Rome and other cities of the Empire, in particular a strict cross-axial layout. But a late alteration transformed the architectural layout of the building in depth, maybe under local influences. This paper aims to highlight the organisation and development of the bath in Baalbek in Roman times. Based on recent research, it focuses on the study of the first phase and offers possible explanations for the late conversion.
