The graffiti presented in this article come from the Temple of Isis on the island of Philae (Aswan) and are, as yet, the only ones of their kind. It is a group of two graffiti which in fact constitute commemorative inscriptions of births and baptisms dating from the end of the 4th/10th century. These texts are precious testimonies from a few Upper Egyptian Christians who, having baptized their children, chose to leave a trace of this act in Arabic at a time when they were considered barely Arabized. They also bear witness to births where the names of Muslims and a Christian appear within the same inscription, during an era known as one of mutual understanding between communities. Thus, these modest graffiti seem to carry information that both challenges and reinforces our knowledge of Christians in Egypt, and therefore it is important to highlight them in this article.

Francisco Álvares gathered a wealth of information about Ethiopia, particularly about its gegraphy, during his travels there between 1520 and 1526, which he recorded in an account published in Portugal in 1540 under the title Ho Preste Joam das indias. He alludes to the Nile, but since Alvares never saw the river, he used it as a geographical datum point which allowed him to locate and define the geography of Ethiopia. He was given much information about the Nile by Ethiopians, and based on this his perception of the geography of Ethiopia is centered on the hydrographic network of the country. The Nile is also linked to a body of geographic knowledge which bears witness not only to Alvares’ culture but also to the influence that his informants had on him. When comparing his account with the Italian version by Ramusio, which appeared in Navigationi et Viaggi (Venice, 1550) one can see that the geographical information provided by Alvares has been re‑used in the text and is the basis for the maps by Giacomo Gastaldi. The reception of Alvares’ text highlight the western interest in and fascination with the Nile in the middle of the 16th century.

From the end of the 12th century there was a legend in Egypt that attributed to the kings of Ethiopia the power to stop the Nile flood. Between the start of the 14th century and the end of the 15th, this belief is mention in numerous Arab sources in the context of diplomatic exchanges between Ethiopia and Egypt, which has led some historians to think that it was a threat used by the Christian kings to assert their power against the Muslim sultans. A detailed examination of the available Ethiopian sources, however, would appear to indicate that this legend was not in circulation in Ethiopia at the time. This article is an attempt to understand the use of this legend in various contexts and to resolve the paradox of a story unknown in Ethiopia yet mentioned in the speeches and letters of Ethiopian kings.

While the question of the sources of the Nile and the explanation of its floods stretches back to antiquity, its heavenly origins in the East of the world were often mentioned by Christian authors. But at the end of the Middle Ages two other themes relating to the mythical geography of the Nile begin to appear: the possible connections of the Egyptian river with the « River of Gold » in West Africa, and the mastery of the flow of the waters upstream from Egypt by a potential Christian prince, the famous “Prester John”. Later, in the 15th century, a branch of the Nile was imagined, flowing from east to west this time, identified with the Niger or the Senegal. The course of the Nile is thus not only a matter of geographical scholarship but one of with very real political and economic implications. Through a study of texts, particularly accounts of pilgrimages and maps of the 14th and 15th centuries we will look at how these themes were spread through various media in western medieval culture.

As early as the 9th or 10th century the Nile was celebrated in Egyptian Arabic-language literature as the most remarkable of the countless wonders of Egypt. However it was not until the Mamluk era that treatises devoted to the « blessed river » began to proliferate, thus creating an independent sub-genre derived from the tradition of the « superior merits of Egypt. » In spite of the intermittent and limited attention given to this corpus, this paper argues for a more careful exploration of the material, taking as a case-study one of the later exponents of this tradition : the Fayḍ al‑madīd fī aḫbār al‑Nīl al‑saʿīd by Ibn ʿAbd al‑Salām al‑Manūfī (d. 927/1521 or 931/1524–1525). Having collected all the available information on the life and works of this little‑known scholar, we aim to lay the foundations for an in‑depth study of this treatise. First we will address the question of the manuscripts and the chronology of the writing of the work, before giving an overview of the structure and content. Finally, we will investigate the author’s method of working by analyzing a sample of extracts that reveal the ambivalence of his position with regard to the ‘authorities’ that he calls upon.

The story of Ḥāʾid ibn Abī Sālūm’s discovery of the paradisiacal source of the Nile appears in mid‑tenth century Arabic literature. Its narrative elements bring it closer to the Qiṣaṣ al‑anbiyāʾ or “Stories of the Prophets” since the narration of the tale fills a gap in the tradition that sometimes associates the Nile of Egypt with Paradise. This association is here confirmed by a descendant of Esau, but it is duplicated by a marvellous adventure with moral value.

Costumes of Egypt. Lost legacies.
I. Dresses of the Nile Valley and its Oases

The Kiosk of Taharqa
Volume II The Ptolemaic Decoration
From the reign of Ptolemy IV Philopator (221–204 BC), an extensive building and decoration programme is attested throughout Egypt, with a specific emphasis on the cult of Osiris and the child gods. The royal legitimation, in which Horus of Edfu and Amun of Thebes played a major role, was a further focal point. With the Theban revolt (206–186 BC), the royal support of the Egyptian temples stopped abruptly and was only resumed under Ptolemy VI Philometor. In the temple of Amun-Ra at Karnak, the Kiosk of Taharqa was a key contribution of the Kushite period (746–655 BC). Under Ptolemy IV, a major restoration campaign took place in the First Courtyard: the gate of the Second Pylon was rebuilt and the Kiosk substantially renovated. Its intercolumnar walls were remodelled and carved with ritual scenes of royal legitimation. The soubassement was decorated with a procession of nomes, received by the goddess Waset, and the column shafts and abaci were engraved with the royal names.
In this book, the Kiosk’s Ptolemaic texts and iconographic decoration are presented and analysed. A global study of Philopator’s architectural activities places the Kiosk in the larger context of Karnak and beyond. In addition, a palaeographic study of the hieroglyphic texts is published.
