Die bisher weitgehend unerforschten Pilger- und Feldflaschen mit Reliefdekor scheinen während des Hellenismus und der Kaiserzeit eine Entwicklung durchlaufen zu haben, die mit importierten Stücken beginnt und mit den Menas-Ampullen endet. Ziel dieser Untersuchung war den Fragen nachzugehen, ob die Produktion dieser Gefäße sich über einen so langen Zeitraum hinweg tatsächlich ohne Unterbrechung fortgesetzt haben kann, und zu klären, warum sie sich so offensichtlicher Beliebtheit erfreuten, wozu sie dienten und was sie für ihre Besitzer repräsentierten. Das gesamte Material wurde gesichtet, nach typologischen und motivischen Merkmalen geordnet, katalogisiert und dann mit motivisch verwandten, datierten oder datierbaren Objekten verglichen, um Kriterien für eine chronologische und kulturgeschichtliche Einordnung der einzelnen Exemplare zu erarbeiten.

Les gourdes de pèlerins au décor en relief sont une catégorie céramique mal connue jusqu'à aujourd'hui. À partir de modèles importés, elles ont été produites en Égypte sans interruption pendant l'époque hellénistique et l'époque romaine jusqu'aux ampoules de saint Ménas. Cet ouvrage essaie d'évaluer si la production de ces objets s'est vraiment développée sans interruption pendant cette longue période, de déterminer les raisons pour lesquelles la forme de ces objets était particulièrement en faveur et enfin leur fonction et leur valeur pour leurs possesseurs. C'est dans le but de définir des critères qui permettent de dater ces gourdes et de les replacer dans l'histoire culturelle, que l'ensemble des pièces, complètes ou fragmentaires, connues ont été rassemblées dans ce volume, présentées dans le catalogue selon des critères typologiques et décoratifs, et datées grâce à l'étude du répertoire décoratif d'autres catégories d'objets dont le contexte de découverte est bien connu.

Pilgrim flasks decorated in relief form a category of ceramics that is still not well known today. Using imported models, they were produced in Egypt without interruption from the Hellenistic period through the Roman era up until the flasks of Saint Menas. This work will try to show whether the production of these objects did indeed develop without interruption throughout this long period and to define the reasons for which the form of these objects found particular favour as well as their function and value for their owners. With a view to defining the criteria that allow for the dating of these flasks and their placing within a cultural history, the ensemble of known pieces, both complete and fragmentary, have been brought together in this volume. They are presented in the catalogue according to typological and decorative criteria and dated thanks to a study of the decorative repertory of other categories of objects whose context of discovery is well known.
