The small baths in al-Bāra are part of a corpus of eight Early-Byzantine public baths, located in villages of Northern Syria with strong regional features. They share a common morphology, geographical position as well as historical and cultural characteristics. Thanks to the recent excavations at al-Bāra, from 2006 to 2010, it is possible to follow the evolution of the bath in detail. Archaeological discoveries show two main phases of occupation. The first, in the Early Byzantine period, using heating techniques inherited from Classical Antiquity. The second, dated to the Islamic period, using a new hybrid system that combines dry heat by hypocausts with humid heat from steam rooms. These well preserved equipment show an unbroken evolution from thermae to hammams, without chronological break. The invention of the steam bath is a technical adaptation depending on new bathing practices, now individual.
