Notre but est d’analyser la transmission de certaines croyances ou propriétés supposées, mais parfois véritables, attribuées aux plantes, de l’Antiquité à la littérature géographique arabo-musulmane. Nous analyserons puis comparerons la description de plantes et de leurs merveilles chez certains auteurs anciens et chez les géographes arabo-musulmans.

The objective of this paper is to study the transmission of certain beliefs or presumed properties that are attributed to plants, making a journey from ancient times to the Arab-Islamic geographical literature. For this purpose, we analyse the descriptions of plants and their magical properties in some ancient authors as well as in Muslim geographers.

Dans cette contribution, notre objectif est d’analyser la transmission de certaines croyances et d’idées, parfois réelles, parfois fantastiques, de l’Antiquité à la géographie arabo-musulmane. Nous partirons de l’analyse textuelle des descriptions animalières et de leurs merveilles dans certains passages de Pline, Élien et Aristote, ainsi que d’autres œuvres appartenant aux géographes arabes du Moyen Âge.

In this contribution, our objective is to analyse the transmission of certain beliefs and ideas, sometimes real and sometimes fantasy, from Antiquity to the Arabic-Islamic geography. We will start off by the textual analysis of the descriptions of animals and their wonders in certain passages from Pliny, Aelian, and Aristotle, as well as other works belonging to Arabic geographers from the Middle Ages.
