La campagne de fouilles conduite en 2010 sur le site de Balat-Ayn Asil a permis de mettre au jour une plaque céramique datant de la fin de l’Ancien Empire, de la Première Période intermédiaire ou de la Deuxième Période intermédiaire, sur laquelle est gravée, entre autres, une image que nous interprétons comme une représentation de la forme animale du dieu Seth. Un tel objet constitue l’unique témoignage d’un culte à Seth dans l’agglomération. En fonction de l’emplacement où elle a été trouvée, la plaque peut être interprétée comme une offrande déposée par un habitant de la ville au sanctuaire d’un des gouverneurs ou comme la marque d’un culte local ; à tout le moins elle apporte la preuve d’une forme de dévotion à Seth au sein de la population d’Ayn Asil.

During the 2010 excavations at Balat-Ayn Asil the discovery of a ceramic plate was made on which one image, among others, dating to the Old Kingdom/First Intermediate Period or the Second Intermediate Period, can be interpreted as a representation of the animal form of the god Seth. Up until this point only one other object containing an image of the god had been discovered at the site, constituting a unique testimony to the worship of Seth in the town. Considering the location of where the plate was found, it may be interpreted in a number of ways; either as an offering presented by an inhabitant of the city to the sanctuary of one of the governors, as a sign of local worship; or that the population of Ayn Asil relied upon Seth on a daily basis.
