This paper presents an unpublished dossier of documents related to the Christians of Damascus in the late 9th century. Preserved through their copy in two manuscripts datable to the 10th or 11th century, these nine documents written in Arabic were issued on the occasion of a conflict that happened among the Melkite Church in Syria in 277/890‑891. The documents prove to have been gathered by David the metropolitan bishop of Damascus, against his adversary Simeon the patriarch of Antioch. The complaint of David of Damascus against Simeon of Antioch, addressed to the two other patriarchs, Elias of Jerusalem and Michael of Alexandria, is edited and translated into French as an appendix to this article.
The complaint of the bishop, the answers and legal opinions expressed by the two patriarchs, along with the letter of the people of Antioch (ahl Anṭākiya) and an earlier sentence of the patriarch Theodosius of Antioch, shed light on the Melkite ecclesiastical hierarchy of the time and give new insights into how the ecclesiastical justice was working and the canon law was used. The conflict also implies Christian and Muslim laymen of Damascus about the administration of the Church income and properties, among which a bakery (furn al-kanīsa). The Tulunid power remains in the background of a conflict which is mainly handled by the ecclesiastical authorities of the Syro‑Egyptian area.- Mathilde Boudier ( : 243113641)

When Western Syriac literature designates the Christian Arabs (ṭayyōyē krisṭyōnē), it is often through a ternary expression, the « Tanūkōyē, ʿAqūlōyē and Ṭūʿōyē », in variable order. These people (ʿammē) played a very significant role during the second civil war (60‑72/680-692) within the Syriac Orthodox Church, as it is starting to consider the Muslim alterity. At this specific time, a homonym bishopric is attested, especially under Georges’ authority (d. 105/724), one of the main intellectuals of this time. These populations seem to have lived in « the Occident » (then forming the ǧund of Qinnasrīn) and in the post-Roman Upper Mesopotamia (the Ǧazīra) during the Umayyad period. The Tanūḫ (Tanūkōyē) are defined as an Iraqi community partially settled in northern Syria, but the period of this migration, traditionally dated to the proto-Byzantine era, is still indeterminate. The two other words are less clear: the ʿAqūlōyē are related to the people of al‑Kūfa (the expression is almost certainly post‑Hiǧra) while the Ṭūʿōyē would correspond to ancient groups from the same area. Our hypothesis is that the moving of these Iraqi ʿammē, designated by this ternary standardized ethnonym (they are not tribes in the sense of arabic nasab) to the Syrian space results from a transfer policy under Muʿāwiya (d. 60/680). It is most likely in this context that they might have been affiliated to the episcopal miaphysit nomenclature, at a time where it was possible to participate in the Believers’ movement while including one’s self in the Antiochene Church.

al-Ṭā’ifiyya wa-l-hawiyya: ṣirāʿāt al-masīḥiyya al-šarqiyya fī Miṣr fī al-ʿaṣr al-ʿuṯmānī. Qirā’a fī ḥuǧǧatayn šarʿiyyatayn wa-fatwā min al-qarn al-sābiʿ ʿašar
Eastern Christianity has been starkly influenced by the Ottoman rule. With the dominant power of the Greek Patriarch over the Chalcedonian communities in the Arab world, these communities have been reconstructed, and many struggles and conflicts erupted.
This paper tackles an aspect of these struggles among Christian communities in Egypt during the 17th century, as represented in a conflict between the monks of Saint Catherine Monastery in Sinai and the Melkite patriarch of Egypt. It examines how the local powers intervened in this conflict, and how the whole narrative has been formulated in legal and sharia texts.

This article recounts fifteen years of archaeological and historical research on the Islamic Sultanates of Medieval Ethiopia. After intense surveys in different areas from Eastern Ethiopia to present-day Somaliland that revealed the ruins of Islamic cities, the research focused on the Ifāt region in Central Ethiopia. Several urban sites were spotted there and one of them, Nora, was investigated, showing vestiges (houses, mosques, cemetery) dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries. Finally, a major discovery, that of a necropolis composed of epigraphic tombs of members of the Walasmaʿ dynasty, whose texts are published here, made it possible to locate the 14th century capital of the Ifāt Sultanate. The spatial organization of this site, Awfāt, closely matches the description made by the Arab writer Abū al-Fidā’ in the early 14th century.

al-Maġāriba wa-tiǧarat al-Hind min al-baḥr al-aḥmar ilā al-muḥīṭ al-hindī wa-l-Ṣīn (nihāyat al qarn 5 H/11 M ilā nihāyat al-qarn 9 H/15 M)
Our approach is based on tracking the Islamic Western merchants (North Africa and Muslim Spain) presence in the Eastern trade from Alexandria to China during the late Middle Age. Trade activity goes back to ancient times and flourished in the Red Sea during the second half of the 5th/11th century thanks to some objective factors, such as troubles along territorial roads (Banū Hilāl), maritime routes (Normans and Crusaders) and the spread of antisemitism spreading in the Mediterranean Western basin. For that reason, the “Geniza” letters are considered as a prominent historical source until the beginning of the 7th/13th century. However, the documents show some limitations, since they mention Jewish merchants only. Yet the prosperity of the “Karimi” trade revealed the existence of a community of Maghribi origin whose members had a decisive role in the 15th century trade. They were conscious of a crisis in the spice trade, which was of no use for the classical world till the advent of the Portuguese in the early 16th century. The latters’ presence allowed many of them to remain in the Indian Ocean islands and even in China. They are mentioned in travelogues, especially the most famous one, Ibn Baṭṭūṭa.

The correlation between written sources and archaeological finds is a relevant method for measuring trade in the western Mediterranean during the early Middle Ages. This paper is based on a multidisciplinary archaeometric approach (petrography, geochemistry, organic chemistry) of ceramics, which allowed us to identify productions and commercial exchanges. The typological and archaeometric studies of archaeological finds have made possible, in the light of a new reading of Judeo-Arabic texts, to sketch out commercial circuits for the traffic of containers and glazed pottery coming from the Islamic lands and circulating between Sicily, Ifrīqiya, Egypt and Provence.

French architect & archaeologist Henry Viollet (1880-1955) was the first to undertake excavations in Samarra, Iraq, delivering a complete on-site survey. The ephemeral capital of the Abbasid Caliphate, settled on the banks of the Tigris from 836 to 892, has attracted a lot of interest among many Western travellers and archaeologists since the nineteenth century. Viollet visited Samarra twice between 1907 and 1910 and published the resulting work as soon as 1909. This field research was partly documented by the architect-archaeologist, but this documentation and his work in Samarra are poorly known. His findings have been overshadowed by the major discoveries made by the German team led by Ernst Herzfeld and Friedrich Sarre between 1911 and 1913. The study of the Viollet fund kept in the BULAC in Paris makes it possible for the first time to assess the archaeologist’s work, the existing material and its contribution to our knowledge of the Abbasid capital.

In the field of Arabic grammar, Ibn al-Ḥāǧib (d. 646/1249) is well known for his Amālī naḥwiyya but also for his Imlāʾ ʿalā al-Kāfiya, the comment he made on his own Kāfiya fī al-naḥw, this latter being the compendium from the Mufaṣṣal of al-Zamaḫšarī (d. 538/1144). Generally understood as “dictation”, imlāʾ, which has two plurals (amālī on the one hand, imlāʾāt on the other hand), is a technical term that belongs to the fund of ancient Arabic literature, including grammar. As an example, let us mention the Amālī by Abū ʿAlī Ismāʿīl al-Qāsim al-Baġdādī al-Qālī (d. 356/967) in the field of adab. But this term, which can be directly related to two lexical families whose roots are M-L-ʾ and M-L-Y and indirectly to a third one, M-L-L, has the meaning of “dictation” only in a very marginal way compared to a whole set of other meanings. This article, exploring these other senses, proposes to trace the probable etymology of imlāʾ with regard to that of “dictation”.

Ibn Sulaym al-Uswānī was sent by the Fatimid conqueror of Egypt, Ǧawhar al-Ṣiqillī, as an ambassador to Dongola between 358/969 and 362/973. When he came back, he wrote an historical and geographical treatise specifically devoted to Nubia and the neighbouring regions, known as Kitāb aḫbār al-Nūba. This work is now considered lost and has only reached us in the form of long extracts quoted by al-Maqrīzī and later writers. It is not a mere catalogue or mirabilia, nevertheless a considerable amount of attention is devoted in al-Uswānī’s account to the marvels that he observed himself or that his informants reported to him, even when their authenticity appeared doubtful. However, as will be shown through the analysis of a selection of passages taken from the Kitāb aḫbār al-Nūba, even the most extraordinary facts are likely to convey original and relevant information concerning Nubian or Sudanese realia.
