The monastic site of Baouit in Middle Egypt has been the target of archaeological excavations since 2003, conducted jointly by the IFAO and the Louvre. With activity extending from the Byzantine period preceding the Arab conquest to the first centuries of the Arab period, the site serves more broadly as a reference for the Mediterranean basin region.
The conference organized in June 2018 provided an opportunity to present recent archaeological work in situ along with the abundant papyrological research being carried out by scholars and academics at the international level. The publication of the proceedings in two parts, archaeology and texts, compares the first results of the field campaigns over a decade and the current papyrological work carried out in parallel in numerous collections.
The seventeen articles gathered in this volume present the results of recent hitherto unpublished research, treated by different specialists who more often than not publish separately. The originality of this work is to bring them together in a multidisciplinary approach, which also makes it possible to deepen methodological reflection on the benefits and sometimes the limits of combining sources.

This book focuses on clothing customs and their evolution in the Egyptian monastic environment of late antiquity and the early Arab period. It falls within the realm of studies on ancient societies as seen through their languages, material culture, daily life and religious practices. The research presented here contributes to a general discussion on the clothing worn in Egypt and its role as a social marker. The designations and forms of monastic vestments are explored through a meticulous lexicographical study and an investigation of the garments that have been preserved or are represented in iconography, in order to place them in the context of ancient “fashion” and to shed light on the technological changes that affected their production.
The idea of a costume specific to the monastic rank seems to have appeared in Egyptian society in the middle of the 4th century. This “official” garb was reserved for special situations, such as participation in the liturgy, while “ordinary” garments were worn by the monk for everyday tasks and for sleeping. Considered separately, the elements that made up the “official” attire were commonly worn at this time (with the exception of the apron and scapular), and it was only when worn together that they distinguished a monk from a layman.

The present book contains the edition and commentary of four wills written on papyrus which date back to the 7th century CE, drawn up by the superiors of the monastery of Saint Phoibammon in Upper Egypt, located on the left bank in Thebes. By way of a private will, the superiors bequeath to their successor the spiritual leadership of the monastery as well as the property of its goods and its management. This dossier has implications of various sorts: legal – to what extent are these documents in accordance with the model of Byzantine law? –, historical – the wills bring new elements on the history of the Saint Phoibammon monastery which was an important centre of ascetic life in the 7th century and where its founder, the bishop Abraham of Hermonthis, lived –, linguistic – it is a bilingual dossier, as the first will is written in Greek and the following three in Coptic, thus allowing to study the translation process and to ponder on the legal status of the Coptic language. This is a unique collection of documents because it enables the study of the same kind of document, coming from the same place, written in two different languages, and dating from a relatively short period of time (less than a century). The present book contains the edition and commentary of four wills written on papyrus which date back to the 7th century CE, drawn up by the superiors of the monastery of Saint Phoibammon in Upper Egypt, located on the left bank in Thebes. Masākin kibār rijāl al-dīn fī miṣr al-qarn al-tāsiʿ ʿashar : sarāy al-shayḫ Muḥammad al-ʿAbbāsī al-Mahdī unmūḏajan
Documents, especially architectural and construction records, are considered as one of the most important sources for the study of extant and disappeared buildings. They unquestionably reflect their history and original architecture without any falsification or ambiguity. The architectural and construction documents of the sarāy of Sheikh Muḥammad al-ʿAbbāsī al-Mahdī in Cairo are one of the best examples.
This sarāy owes its architectural importance to the fact that it served as a model for the residences of Egyptian great clergy in the 19th Century and its historical importance to the association of its construction and architecture with a personality who played a crucial role in the religious and political affairs at that time. Despite the changes its architecture has undergone, whether through removal or addition, it has been possible to study it thanks to the documents gathered in the National Archives in Cairo.
This study is in four parts. The first is a critical edition of the architectural and construction documents of this sarāy. The second is a documented reconstruction of the biography of its founder. The third is a study of its architecture, based on the architectural and construction documents. The fourth addresses the main factors that have affected its architecture.

Ḥūš al‑Bāšā. The Royal Cemetery in Cairo
This article focuses on Ḥūš al‑Bāšā, the Royal Cemetery near the mausoleum of al‑Imām al‑Šāfʿī. First, the historiography of Ḥūš al‑Bāšā is examined in order to situate the mausoleum dynastically and geographically. Then, this study carefully reconstructs the complicated building chronology of Ḥūš al‑Bāšā by cross‑referencing contemporary sources with eyewitness accounts of nineteenth‑century travelers and drawings by Pascal Coste as well as Antonio Schranz Jr. to reassess when the mausoleum was built.
In the course of critically rewriting the historical narrative of Ḥūš al‑Bāšā, this study maps the cemetery’s blend of appropriated decorative motifs to their original models of inspiration with the purpose of analyzing the eclectic tendencies of Ḥūš al‑Bāšā’s creative process and the definition of what constituted the Ottoman stylistic tradition in the nineteenth century. Finally, a comparative trajectory between the artistic milieus in the imperial state of Istanbul and the khedival province of Cairo is developed to question the vectors of influence driving the westernization of Ḥūš al‑Bāšā’s stylistic evolution. Ḥūš al‑Bāšā arguably represents a manifestation of power, a moment of decisive visual transformation, and a memory of a modernizing social order.

A Decisive Phase of Intense Diplomatic Negotiations between the Mamluk Sultanate and Western Powers (the Crown of Aragon, and the Republics of Genoa and Venice), 1288–1293/AH 687–692
The end of the Latin States of the East in 1291 was a decisive stage in the crusades and in the relations between Christians and Muslims, as historiography has long emphasised. However, in the context of this major conflict, some Western powers—the Republics of Genoa, Venice and the Crown of Aragon—managed to define compromise and exchange agreements of various kinds, which were quite remarkable and which for a long time have gone unnoticed, despite their great originality. This article focuses on the negotiations and the audacious double peace treaty concluded between the Aragonese and Mamluk rulers in 1290 and 1293. It draws on the remarkable archival documentation that has survived on this subject, in particular the Arabic and Catalan versions of the treaty, which has come to new attention thanks to recent developments in the historiography of diplomatic relations in the Middle Ages, both in the Christian West and in the Muslim Levant.
