Les Thermes du Centre à Bosra présentent une chronologie complexe, caractéristique des grands thermes dits « impériaux » du Proche-Orient romano byzantin. L’analyse architecturale du monument associée au réexamen archéo-zoologique d’une fouille menée en 1987 dans une de ses salles de service, a mis en évidence l’utilisation d’os d’animaux et de litière pour alimenter les foyers des bains à l’époque byzantine. L’analyse des restes calcinés a permis de préciser la nature de ce combustible, principalement composé de têtes de caprinés. En nous faisant suivre le circuit de distribution de la viande jusqu’à l’évacuation des déchets d’abattage, cette découverte permet de s’interroger sur les avantages et les inconvénients de ce combustible animal, sur ses autres attestations et, plus largement, sur la gestion et l’économie des déchets à l’échelle d’une ville.

The Central thermae in Bosra share with the so-called “imperial” Middle East baths of the Romano-Byzantine period a complex chronology. The architectural analysis of the building associated with an archaeozoological study of an excavation conducted in 1987 in one of its service rooms, highlighted the use of animal bones and litter to fuel the furnaces of the baths in the Byzantine period. Analysis of the charred remains has clarified the nature of the fuel, mainly composed of caprine heads. By allowing tracing the distribution channel of the meat industry down to the disposal of slaughter waste, this discovery raises questions about the advantages and disadvantages of this animal fuel, or on its other attestations and, broadly on the management and economy of the rubbishes at the scale of a city.
