Ernesto Verrucci Bey (1874-1945) played an important role in Egyptian architecture as architect of the Royal palaces. Representative of the late eclectic architecture, he conceived a protean work that is investigated through the many facets of his interests and commitments, as they appear from his biography, his library and his collection of photos. The patriotic ideology of this personality marked his architectural and decorative work, especially his achievements inspired by Mamluk monuments. Ernesto Verrucci is the last representative of a cohort of Italian architects who, since the end of the 19th century, engaged themselves in an attempt to define a clear national identity for the Egyptian architecture. In this way they intended to encourage the cultural development of the nationalist political movement.
