Balat XII
The Sheikh Muftah Site
In the area of Balat on the eastern Dakhla Oasis the archaeological mission of the French Institute for Oriental Archaelogy has uncovered a large area consisting of various camps dating from the early 4th Dynasty (ca. 2600 BC), which were briefly but intensively occupied. These are understood to have served as residential base camps for some of the indigenous (and not yet fully sedentary) population of the oasis, the so-called Late Sheikh Muftah group. Little is known about this rather enigmatic group, but the excavations at Balat have revealed for the first time a well-preserved intra-site stratigraphy with hitherto unknown dwelling features for Sheikh Muftah contexts. The data gathered here is based on analysis of the features, the material culture and in-depth scientific studies. The new evidence offers not only hints about local crafts, food production and environmental conditions in Balat, but also represents a new contribution to ongoing discussions on subsistence and patterns of mobility of non-sedentary groups in the Western Desert. This has given archaeologists a glimpse of the lifestyle of the Sheikh Muftah group, and also, for the first time, shone a spotlight on daily life in a camp site in the oasis depression. The date of this occupation in the Early Old Kingdom falls into a period when Egyptian Pharaonic presence was just beginning to be evident in archaeological data. Cross-cultural contacts between the Balat Sheikh Muftah community and the Egyptian Pharaonic population, both within the oasis and into the Nile Valley are also in evidence and contribute to the discussions on transcultural exchange and assimilation processes in the oasis.

Adam Mestyan
Primordial History, Print Capitalism, and Egyptology in Nineteenth-Century Cairo
Muṣṭafā Salāma al-Naǧǧārī’s The Garden of Ismail’s Praise
How old is the world? This question was a central problem for Muslims, Christians, and Jews in the face of the new scientific discoveries in the nineteenth century. This book introduces the answer from a Muslim point of view, outside of official institutions. The extended introduction – a microhistory in the Middle East – explores the life and œuvre of a forgotten Egyptian intellectual and poet, Muṣṭafā Salāma al-Naǧǧārī (d. 1870). Next, Mestyan provides the English translation and Arabic transcription of the surviving fragments of al-Naǧǧārīʼs manuscript, The Garden of Ismail’s Praise. This is a universal history of Egypt, written while the Suez Canal was under construction to praise the governor Khedive Ismail (r. 1863-1879). The author advocates a unique solution to computing the period of primordial history, before the Deluge, in the age of steam and print. Al-Naǧǧārī's alternative Nahḍa voice is available for the first time in this edition.

Adam Mestyan is Assistant Professor at the History Department of Duke University. His first monograph was Arab Patriotism – The Ideology and Culture of Power in Late Ottoman Egypt (Princeton University Press, 2017).

The Interpreter of Secrets
The Dīwān of Šayḫ Muḥammad b. Abī al-Ḥasan al-Bakrī
Based on a study of twelve Arabic manuscripts, The Interpreter of Secrets is a critical edition of the entire surviving corpus of the poetry of Muḥammad ibn Abī al-Hasan al-Bakrī (930-994/1524-1586), a leading jurist, Sufi, and literary figure in sixteenth-century Cairo. The texts of the poems are accompanied by a critical apparatus including all of the plausible variant readings and alternative versions of the poems. Al-Bakrī was a major literary figure, and his Sufi poetry belongs to a tradition that draws on the work of poets such as Ibn al-Fāriḍ, Ibn al-ʿArabī, al-Būṣīrī, and ʿAlī Wafā. In addition to their literary value, the poems are an important source for the study of Sufi theology and practice in Ottoman Egypt, including to such topics as the cult of the saints, the use of coffee for ritual purposes, the controversial appropriation of Ibn al-ʿArabī’s monist theology, and the establishment of sacred lineages. The editors have also included short Arabic and English introductions and an appendix that identifies the manuscript sources for each poem. This book will be of interest to students of Arabic literature, Sufism, and Ottoman intellectual history.

The gate of the second pylon of the temple of Amun is one of the most monumental achievements of the Ptolemies at Karnak. Built at the beginning of the Ptolemaic period, it was decorated under three successive kings. Ptolemy IV Philopator only had time to put his name on the avant-portebefore the Theban revolt broke out. After restoring order, Ptolemy VI Philometor first decorated the front of the door with scenes of offerings to the god Amun. A dozen years later, the interior passage of the door was engraved. Finally, Ptolemy VIII Euergetes had the cosmogonic texts engraved on the base of the facade. The texts of the gate describe the theology of the god Amun in its various aspects. Since the creation of the world by the god, his city and his temple became the model on which other cities were built. Thebes is the seat of the Creator from where he rules the world. The scenes describe the relationship between Amon and his consort Mut and his son Khonsu, but also with other deities, such as Montu, Maât, Isis and Amonet. The decoration also defines the relationship of the god Amun with the ogdoade and the gods of Djeme. Texts and images, published in this volume, testify to the vitality of the Theban theology in the Ptolemaic period, and to the practices of the myth in ancient Egyptian civilization.
