Le Bulletin archéologique des Écoles françaises à l’étranger propose les contributions de l’École française d’Athènes, de l’École française de Rome, de l’Institut français d’archéologie orientale, du Centre d'études alexandrines, de l’École française d’Extrême-Orient et de la Casa de Velázquez réunis au sein du Réseau des Écoles françaises à l’étranger. C’est ainsi toute l’actualité des recherches archéologiques menées par le réseau des EFE sur tout le pourtour méditerranéen mais aussi dans les Balkans, en Inde et en Asie qui est proposée dans ce Bulletin exclusivement numérique, multilingue et à la publication continue.

Depuis les travaux de Jean Yoyotte dans les années 1980, il était apparu qu’une reprise du dossier de Mefkat, ville du delta occidental, était nécessaire, qui inclurait notamment une nouvelle édition du Rituel de Mefky (bloc Caire Musée égyptien JE 45936). Les informations portées par ce fragment de naos permettent de revenir sur la géographie locale et les lieux mis à contribution dans le Rituel, mais aussi de préciser différents aspects de la théologie de Mefkat. La figure d’Hathor qui y était vénérée, associée à un Osiris et à un Harsomtous dans une triade d’inspiration osirienne, possédait une forte connotation bovine. Qualifiée de ba d’Isis, de brillante ou de Dorée, Hathor de Mefkat était une vache maternelle, une déesse dont la tête coupée par Horus fut remplacée par un mufle de vache, à l’image d’Isis dans le récit de l’affrontement entre Horus et Seth. Ce mythe étiologique se trouve en outre, avec quelques adaptations mineures, dans d’autres sanctuaires d’Hathor de Mefkat, que l’on peut identifier dans le nord de la Haute Égypte et dans le delta oriental.
Cette monographie est la version remaniée d’une thèse de doctorat soutenue à l’université de Lille en 2009. Elle présente une nouvelle traduction et un commentaire du Rituel de Mefky, puis propose de revenir sur le toponyme, son origine et sa localisation, avant d’analyser les différentes facettes de la religion locale.

Following the studies by Jean Yoyotte in the 1980s, updating the documentation on Mefkat, a city in the western Delta was necessary, including a new edition of the block Cairo Egyptian Museum JE 45936 (Ritual of Mefky). The text on this fragment of a naos provides an accurate picture of the local geography and clarifies different aspects of the specific theology of Mefkat. The form of Hathor that was worshipped in Mefkat, associated with Osiris and Harsomtus in a triad of Osirian inspiration, had a strong bovine connotation. Described as the ba of Isis, the Shining One or the Golden One, Hathor of Mefkat was a cow, a form of Isis whose head, cut off by her son Horus, was replaced by a cow’s head, in the same way as in the tale of “The Contendings of Horus and Seth”. This etiological myth is also found, with minor changes, in other sanctuaries of Hathor of Mefkat, identifiable in northern Upper Egypt and the Eastern delta. This monograph is a revised version of a doctoral thesis defended at the University of Lille in 2009. It presents a new translation of and commentary on the Ritual of Mefky, and then analyzes the toponym Mefkat, its origin and location, as well as the different facets of the local religion.

This bilingual English/Arabic manual is intended to accompany the training of future ceramic specialists in the Arab world. Resulting from the collaboration of four major institutions of French archaeology abroad: the Section française de la direction des Antiquités du Soudan (Sfdas), the Institut français d’archéologie orientale (Ifao), the Institut français du Proche-Orient (Ifpo) and the Centre français de recherche de la péninsule Arabique (Cefrepa), it draws on the recent work of specialists from the Nile Valley, the Near East and the Arabian Peninsula to shed light on the theoretical reflections that have enriched ceramic studies in recent decades. Providing a genuine field tool, this volume is nonetheless a skilfully illustrated collection of the contribution of ceramic studies to the understanding of human history.

Ce manuel bilingue anglais/arabe est destiné à accompagner la formation des futurs céramologues du monde arabe. Fruit de la collaboration de quatre institutions majeures de l’archéologie française à l’étranger ‑ la Section française de la direction des Antiquités du Soudan (Sfdas), l’Institut français d’archéologie orientale (Ifao), l’Institut français du Proche-Orient (IFPO), et le Centre français de recherche de la péninsule Arabique (Cefrepa) ­, il s’appuie sur les travaux récents des spécialistes de la vallée du Nil, du Proche-Orient et de la péninsule Arabique pour éclairer les réflexions théoriques dont la céramologie s’est enrichie ces dernières décennies. In the Ptolemaic station of Bi’r Samut (3rd cent. B.C.) on the desert-road between Edfu and Berenice, the same African nomads were called Trogodytai in Greek and Blhm.w in Egyptian. In this word we recognise the Blemmyes of Greek and Latin literature and of documents from late antiquity. And yet, three centuries later, these nomads were simply called Barbaroi in the Roman garrisons of the Eastern Desert. From this discovery came the idea to publish, in the same volume, the demotic ostraca from Bi’r Samut that mention Blemmyes, together with a group of Greek orders to distribute grain to Barbarians from the time of Gallienus, found at the Roman praesidium of Xeron Pelagos.
The only archaeological remains that can be attributed with certainty to these nomads are vessels and shards of Eastern Desert Ware, a hand built, polished ceramic decorated with incisions. The examples found at Bi’r Samut are published in the volume. The three chapters consecrated to the unpublished documents are preceded by a presentation of the history of the nomad-population of the Eastern Desert of Egypt in the long perspective from the Pharaonic period onwards, and reflexions on the names given by the Greeks and the Romans in turn to these people who occupied the Eastern Desert of Egypt and Nubia.

The first Science for Ancient Egyptian Materials and Technologies conference was held under the auspices of His Excellency Pr. Khaled el-Enany at the Manial Palace Museum in Cairo, from 4 to 6 November 2017. Its aim was to provide a venue at which specialists in the application of physical and chemical sciences to archaeology could meet, present their research and exchange ideas. Above all, it was intended to highlight the importance of archaeological sciences and interdisciplinary approaches within Egyptology. This volume brings together papers on high-level studies relevant to all fields of archaeometry, carried out both on museum objects and at excavation sites. It provides a general overview of the impressive possibilities that this science offers to various fields, and opens the way for a radical improvement of its application in archaeological research in Egypt.

La première conférence Science for Ancient Egyptian Materials and Technologies, placée sous l’égide de Son Excellence Pr. Khaled el-Enany, s’est tenue au musée du palais Manial au Caire, du 4 au 6 novembre 2017. Elle cherchait à offrir aux spécialistes des sciences de la physique et de la chimie appliquées à l’archéologie un lieu de rencontres, de présentations et d’échanges. Surtout, elle visait à souligner l’importance des sciences archéologiques et des approches interdisciplinaires dans la recherche en égyptologie. Ce volume rassemble des articles présentant des travaux de haut niveau qui concernent tous les domaines de l’archéométrie, menés à la fois sur des objets de musées et sur des fouilles archéologiques. Il donne un aperçu général des possibilités extraordinaires que cette science offre dans des domaines variés et ouvre la voie à une généralisation de son application dans la recherche archéologique en Égypte.

انعقد بنجاح المؤتمر الأول لـ «علوم المواد والتقنيات في مصر القديمة» بمتحف قصر المَنْيَل في القاهرة، تحت رعاية معالي الأستاذ الدكتور خالد العناني، في الفترة من ٤ إلى ٦ نوڤمبر ٢٠١٧. وسعى هذا المؤتمر إلى توفير مكان لالتقاء المتخصصين في مجاليّ الفيزياء والكيمياء التطبيقية المُرتبطين بعلم الآثار، وعرض الأبحاث وتبادل الآراء. وكان يهدف بالأساس إلى التأكيد على أهمية العلوم الأثرية والمناهج متعددة التخصصات في دراسة علم المصريات. ويضم هذا المجلد أوراقًا بحثية تعرض أعمالًا رفيعة المستوى تتعلق بجميع مجالات علم الأركيوميتري، والتي أُجريت على قطع متحفية وعلى حفائر أثرية على حدٍ سواء. كما أنه يُعطي لمحة عامة عن الإمكانات الهائلة التي يقدمها هذا العلم في مختلف المجالات، ويُمهّد الطريق أمام تعميم تطبيقه في مجال البحث الأثري في مصر.
