Cet article est la publication d’une sculpture inédite conservée au Musée égyptien du Caire. La statue est en basalte noir et sa provenance reste inconnue. Il s’agit d’un support de table monopodium, représentant un boxeur. Cette thématique est rare en Égypte romaine, mais elle trouve de bons échos dans les papyrus grecs. Ce nouveau monopodium est probablement le deuxième exemplaire connu avec ce motif décoratif dans l’empire romain. C’est un objet précieux qui s’ajoute à la collection égyptienne de monopodia figurés, et qui devait vraisemblablement provenir de luxueuses maisons ou villas romaines en Égypte.

This article is dealing with an unpublished sculpture in the Cairo Egyptian Museum. The sculpture is carved in black basalt and has no authenticated provenance. The object is a table support monopodium, decorated with a boxer. The subject is very rare in Roman Egypt, but finds good testimonies from papyri about athletics and gymnasia games. The new monopodium is perhaps the second known example in the Roman Empire with such a decorative theme. It adds a very valuable model to a small collection of figurative monopodia from Egypt. This kind of object comes most likely from luxurious roman houses or villae in Egypt.
