Le double accord conclu entre couronne d’Aragon et sultanat mamelouk en 1290 puis 1293, exceptionnellement conservé dans une double version en arabe et en catalan, a suscité récemment l’intérêt des chercheurs grâce à la dynamique de renouvellement des études sur la diplomatie et sur les Mamelouks, après être longtemps passé quasi-inaperçu.

Malgré ce regain d’intérêt récent, bien des aspects originaux de cet accord méritent d’être encore soulignés, analysés et replacés dans leur contexte bien particulier, à court et à long terme, dans une perspective d’histoire connectée.

Deux workshops ont ainsi été prévus autour de chacune des versions de l’accord, l’une à Barcelone le 5 mars 2024, l’autre au Caire le 9 mai suivant. Cette dernière, en s’appuyant plus particulièrement sur la version arabe de 1293, constituera une occasion de s’interroger sur le statut de cet accord : trêve ou traité ? Accord non promulgué officiellement mais ayant tout de même connu des formes d’application ? Comment a-t-il été perçu a posteriori?  Que révèle-t-il sur les formulations, les pratiques et objectifs de négociations entre deux pouvoirs chrétiens et musulmans dans le contexte particulier de la chute des Etats latins d’Orient et dans le temps long ?

The double agreement concluded between the Crown of Aragon and the Mamluk sultanate in 1290AD/689H and 1293AD/692H, exceptionally preserved in a double version in Arabic and Catalan, has recently aroused the interest of researchers thanks to the dynamic renewal of studies on diplomacy and on the Mamluks, after having long gone almost unnoticed.

Despite this recent revival of interest, many of the original aspects of this agreement still deserve to be highlighted, analysed and placed in their particular context, in the short and long term, from a connected history perspective.

Two workshops have been planned around each version of the agreement, one in Barcelona on 5 March 2024, the other in Cairo on 9 May 2024. The latter, relying more particularly on the Arabic version of 1293AD/692AH, will be an opportunity to question the status of this agreement: truce or treaty? Agreement that has not been officially promulgated but has nevertheless been implemented in some form? How was it perceived a posteriori? What does it reveal about the formulations, practices and objectives of negociations between two Christian and Muslim powers in the particular context of the fall of the Latin states of the East and in the long term?
