Writing history is a craft; it has its own tools and methods. It requires both the gathering of traces of the past, and the reconstruction of what these traces reveal and conceal. Looking at the material critically is essential for conducting historical research.

The Institut français d’archéologie orientale (Ifao) is organising a workshop for early-career Egyptian historians working on topics related to Egypt’s modern history.

This third edition will start on Tuesday 16th of March with an introductory session at Ifao (10am to 3pm). Each participant will be required to share with the group a one-page presentation in Arabic (abstract, list of sources, research question) to be circulated to the rest of the group. A list of compulsory readings will be also sent to participants before the start of the semester.

Five sessions will then take place between March and June 2027, from 4.30 to 7.30 pm, organised as follows:  

• 4:30–5:10 pm: Research presentation by a participant (15’), followed by discussion (25’)
  
  
• 5:30–6:10 pm: Research presentation by a participant, followed by discussion
  
  
• 6:30–7:30 pm: Thematic or methodological lecture led by the organizers

The sequence of presentations over the course of the year will be determined by the organizers in accordance with the participants’ research themes. All participants are therefore expected to have prepared their presentations by March 2027.

• Tuesday 20th of April (4.30 to 7.30 pm)
• Tuesday 11th of May (4.30 to 7.30 pm)
• Tuesday 25th of May (4.30 to 7.30 pm)
• Tuesday 22nd of June (4.30 to 7.30 pm)

As the programme suggests, this workshop relies on the active and serious engagement of the participants. Attendance is essential, and therefore, mandatory to receive the workshop’s certificate.

Candidates must meet the following requirements:

- be enrolled in a MA or PhD programme at a university in Egypt; (Candidates who have already received their PhDs are not eligible to apply and will not be considered)

- Priority will be given to topics related to modern Egypt but topics on the modern Middle East and modern Africa may be considered.

- good knowledge of Arabic (all sessions, feedback, and Q&A will be fully conducted in Arabic) and English (for assigned readings).

"ليس المؤرخ بالرجل الحُر، فهو لا يعرف من الماضي إلا ما يرغب الماضي في أن في أن يُعرِّفه إيّاه". (مارك بلوخ، المجتمع الإقطاعي).

كتابة التاريخ "صنعة"، لها أدواتها ومناهجها، وهي تحتاج إلى أمرين على الأقل، الأول هو جمع آثار الماضي وما يتركه لنا من أدلة وقرائن، والثاني هو إعادة بناء ما تكشفه هذه الآثار والقرائن وما تخفيه. ولا غنى في البحث التاريخي عن إجادة النظر بعين ناقدة إلى المادة التاريخية.

تنطلق هذه الدورة الثالثة يوم الثلاثاء 16 مارس بجلسة تمهيدية في المعهد الفرنسي للآثار الشرقية (Ifao)، من الساعة العاشرة صباحًا حتى الثالثة عصرًا. ويُطلب من كل مشارك أن يُعدّ عرضًا تقديميًا باللغة العربية في صفحة واحدة (ملخّص، وقائمة بالمصادر، وسؤال البحث)، يُعمَّم على سائر أعضاء المجموعة. كما ستُرسَل إلى المشاركين قائمة بالقراءات الإلزامية قبل بدء الفصل الدراسي.

ثم تُعقد خمس جلسات في الفترة من مارس إلى يونيو 2027، من الساعة 4:30 حتى 7:30 مساءً، على النحو الآتي:

• 4:30 – 5:10 مساءً: عرض بحثي يقدّمه أحد المشاركين (15 دقيقة)، تليه مناقشة (25 دقيقة)
• 5:30 – 6:10 مساءً: عرض بحثي يقدّمه أحد المشاركين، تليه مناقشة
• 6:30 – 7:30 مساءً: محاضرة موضوعية أو منهجية يلقيها المنظِّمون

ويحدّد المنظِّمون ترتيب العروض على مدار العام وفقًا لموضوعات أبحاث المشاركين، ولذا يُنتظَر من جميع المشاركين أن يكونوا قد أعدّوا عروضهم بحلول مارس 2027.

• الثلاثاء 30 مارس (من 4:30 حتى 7:30 مساءً)
• الثلاثاء 20 أبريل (من 4:30 حتى 7:30 مساءً)
• الثلاثاء 11 مايو (من 4:30 حتى 7:30 مساءً)
• الثلاثاء 25 مايو (من 4:30 حتى 7:30 مساءً)
• الثلاثاء 22 يونيو (من 4:30 حتى 7:30 مساءً)

وكما يتّضح من البرنامج، تقوم هذه الورشة على المشاركة الفاعلة والجادّة من جانب المشاركين. لذلك فإن الحضور أساسي، ومن ثَمّ فهو إلزامي للحصول على شهادة الورشة.

شروط التقدّم

يجب أن تتوفّر في المتقدّمين الشروط الآتية:

• أن يكونوا مقيَّدين في برنامج ماجستير أو دكتوراه بإحدى الجامعات في مصر (لا يحقّ للحاصلين على درجة الدكتوراه التقدّم، ولن يُنظر في طلباتهم)؛
• تُمنح الأولوية للموضوعات المتّصلة بمصر الحديثة، وقد يُنظر في موضوعات تتناول الشرق الأوسط الحديث أو أفريقيا الحديثة؛
• إجادة اللغة العربية (إذ تُعقد جميع الجلسات والتعليقات وفقرات الأسئلة والأجوبة باللغة العربية بالكامل)، واللغة الإنجليزية (لقراءة النصوص المقرَّرة).
