The event will take place in Cairo in the premises of the American University in Cairo (Tahrir Campus) on June16 and at the Institut français d'archéologie orientale on June 17, 2023.

About the Conference

The past two decades in Egypt have witnessed a revival of interest in the country’s recent past. While the 2011 uprising stimulated efforts to document and archive the present, the possibilities opened by the revolutionary moment also led scholars and activists to ask new questions about the past and to re-explore the legacies of the post-1952 political order.

Such debates have intersected with new approaches to archives and sources. The limited availability of state archives for the post-1952 period has led researchers to use and create alternative sources, including oral histories and private archives. Historians have also experimented with new forms of knowledge production outside state-dominated archives and the academy (Ghazaleh, 2019).   

The conference seeks to examine the themes addressed as well as the methodologies adopted by recent works on the subject of republican Egypt. Scholars have long attended to the politics and the political economy of Nasserism (Gordon, 1992; Kirk, 1995; Waterbury, 1983); but recent studies have sought to explore in greater depth the cultural, intellectual, and social history of post-revolutionary Egypt (Abou-El-Fadl, 2019; Di Capua, 2018; El Shakry, 2015; Mossallam, 2015; Yunis, 2012). The fiftieth anniversary of the 1967 war also sparked research and debate on the history of the ‘Naksa’, its legacies and repercussions (Fahmy, 2017; Mansur, 2019; Soliman, 2021). In addition, some recent studies have sought to re-explore the ruptures and the continuities between the Nasser and Sadat eras, and to examine the Infitah from a social and cultural history perspective (Abul Magd, 2017; Gervasio, 2010; Labib, 2022; Salem, 2020; Simon, 2022).

The conference aims to reflect on these new approaches, as well as to bring into conversation scholars, public historians, and archivists. We invite papers based on primary research, which reflect critically on various aspects of the history and historiography of post-1952 Egypt and on the question of archives. We also welcome proposals from scholars who have been engaged in projects aimed at producing alternative forms of historical knowledge.

عن المؤتمر

شهد العقدان الأخيران في مصر تجدد الاهتمام بالتاريخ الحديث للبلد. بينما حثت ثورة يناير٢٠١١ على توثيق الحاضر وأرشفته، فإن الإمكانيات التي كشفتها اللحظة الثورية قد دفعت باحثين ونشطاء أيضًا إلى طرح أسئلة جديدة بخصوص الماضي وإعادة استكشاف ميراث ثورة ١٩٥٢.

تقاطعت نقاشات كهذه مع استخدامات جديدة للأرشيف، حيث أدى التقييد على الوثائق الرسمية لما بعد ١٩٥٢بالباحثين لاستخدام مصادر جديدة، بما فيها من تاريخ شفهي وأرشيفات خاصة. كذلك اختبر الباحثون أشكالًا جديدة لإنتاج المعرفة تتجاوز الأكاديميا التقليدية (غزالة، ٢٠١٩).

يسعي المؤتمر لمناقشة الثيمات المتناوَلة والمناهج التي تبنتها الدراسات الحديثة عن مصر الجمهورية. هناك الكثير مما كتب عن الحقبة الناصرية، ولكن بينما مال الباحثون في السابق لدراسة تاريخها السياسي والاقتصادي (جوردون، ١٩٩٢؛ كيرك، ١٩٩٥؛ واتربري، ١٩٨٣)، فقد ركزت الدراسات الحديثة بشكل أعمق على التاريخ الثقافي والفكري والاجتماعي (الشاكري، ٢٠١٥؛ دي كابوا، ٢٠١٨؛ مسلم، ٢٠١٢؛ يونس، ٢٠١٢)، كما أثارت الذكري الخمسون لحرب ١٩٦٧ أيضًا الاهتمام بتاريخ النكسة وتداعياتها (فهمي، ٢٠١٧؛ منصور، ٢٠١٩؛ سليمان، ٢٠٢١). بالإضافة لذلك، فقد سعت بعض الأبحاث الحديثة لإعادة استكشاف نقاط التواصل والانقطاع بين حقبتي ناصر والسادات، ولدراسة الانفتاح من منظور تاريخ اجتماعي وثقافي (جيرفازيو، ٢٠١٠؛ سالم، ٢٠٢٠؛ سايمون،٢٠٢٢).

يهدف المؤتمر لمناقشة هذه المقاربات الجديدة، من خلال حوار يجمع بين باحثين وأرشيفيين ومؤرخين يتجهون للجمهور العام. نرحب بمقترحات تتناول بشكل نقدي جوانب مختلفة من تاريخ مصر ما بعد 1952 وتأريخها وأرشفتها، كما نرحّب بمقترحات من الباحثين المنخرطين في مشاريع تهدف لإنتاج أشكال بديلة من المعرفة التاريخية.
