From Demotic to Arabic: Expanding the Ifao Papyrology Seminar

Prof. Khaled Younes, Dr. Ahmad Nakshara, Dr. Laura Aguer, and Dr. Mahmoud El Bokl

Langue : anglais.

Building on the immense success of the IFAO Papyrology Monthly Seminar and the Institut français d’archéologie orientale’s (IFAO) long-standing commitment to supporting papyrological studies, we are pleased to announce the expansion of the seminar to include Demotic Papyrology.

The IFAO Papyrology Monthly Seminar provides a unique forum for the presentation, discussion, and collaborative study of documentary papyri from Egypt. The seminar brings together scholars and researchers working on different periods, languages, and documentary traditions, with the aim of fostering dialogue across disciplinary and linguistic boundaries.

Since its establishment, the seminar has brought together specialists working on the three principal languages of documentary papyri from Late Antique and early Islamic Egypt - Greek, Coptic, and Arabic. With the inclusion of Demotic papyri, the seminar now opens its discussions to an even broader chronological and linguistic spectrum, extending the study of Egyptian documentary traditions into the earlier periods of Egyptian history.

The integration of Demotic papyri offers an exceptional opportunity to explore continuities and transformations in Egyptian documentary culture across different periods and languages. It will encourage dialogue between specialists of Demotic, Greek, Coptic, and Arabic Papyrology, allowing participants to examine questions of documentary practice, scribal culture, palaeography, administrative structures, legal and economic documentation, and the transmission and transformation of documentary conventions over time.

With the inclusion of Demotic, the IFAO Papyrology Monthly Seminar seeks to strengthen its role as a meeting point for scholars of Egyptian documentary culture and to promote sustained dialogue across the traditionally separated fields of Demotic, Greek, Coptic, and Arabic papyrology.

We therefore welcome applications from researchers interested in Demotic papyri. The Demotic section of the seminar will be supervised by Dr. Mahmoud EL BOKL, a specialist in Demotic Papyrology, Lecturer at the Faculty of Arts, Capital University (formerly Helwan University), and Research Associate at the IFAO.
