Islamic Pottery in Egypt
3 Study Days in Ifao

These 3 study days will take place at the Ifao. They are aimed at professionals from the MoTA and the University wishing to learn more about Islamic Pottery in Egypt. The maximum number of participants is 10.
On the first day, the workshop offers a chronological overview of the main Egyptian and imported Islamic ceramics from the early 7th c. to the end of the Byzantine period, and up to the 18th c. To complete this training, and with the aim of enabling participants to create their own documentation, a ceramics drawing training workshop will be offered on the second day, alternating with a visit to pottery workshop in Fostat. Finally, a visit to Cairo's Museum of Islamic Art will round off the last day.

Programme
Day 1: Chronological overview of Islamic Pottery in Egypt from Umayyad period during the Ottoman period.

- Sylvie Marchand « Inventory of archaeological sites of Islamic period in Egypt ». In chronological order, presentation on map with bibliography of the major archaeological sites that generated the publication of ceramics. Distribution of PDF articles and books useful for ceramic studies.
- 11h00-11h30: Coffee break
- 11h30 -12h00: Sylvie Marchand « A transition period: ceramics in Egypt from the end of the Byzantine period to the first centuries of Islam »
- 12h00-13h00: Julie Monchamp « Fatimid Pottery in Egypt »
- 13h00-14h00: Lunch at the Ifao14h00-16h00: Julie Monchamp « Mamluk and Ottoman Pottery in Egypt »
Day 2: Learnings
The activities will be done alternately, the participants will be divided into two groups 1&2 consisting of 5 people each.

- 13h00-14h00: Lunch at IFAO
- 14h30-17h00: Visit of a pottery workshop in Fostat in Cairo (Yahya el-Shahat)
- Group 2
- 10h30-13h00: Visit of a pottery workshop in Fostat in Cairo (Mohamed Ibrahim)
- 13h00-14h00: Lunch at the IFAO
- 14h00-17h00:Drawing workshop by Ayman Hussein.
Day 3: Visit of the Museum of Islamic Arts in Cairo (Mohamed Ibrahim)
