Beyond the Tree
A Journey into the Traditions of Egyptian Woodcraft

As part of the exhibition "Beyond the Tree, A Journey into the Traditions of Egyptian Woodcraft", the Medjehu Project and Aswat (Cedej/Ifao) and Paysages sonores Project (Ifao, EfA, HiSoMA-CNRS, univ. Lyon 2) will organise a study day host at the Institut français d’archéologie orientale (Ifao), dedicated to trees, wood, and the rich artisanal and artistic traditions surrounding them. This event will bring together researchers, artisans, and heritage specialists to foster dialogue on the study and preservation of this unique legacy. Covering a broad chronological scope—from Ancient Egypt to the present day—it will explore various themes that highlight the enduring significance of wood in Egyptian culture.

- Crafting with Wood: Exploring Traditional Techniques and Modern Innovations
- Sounding wood: Egyptian Wooden Music Instruments across the time
- Preserving Egypt’s Wooden Heritage: Challenges and Perspectives
This day of conferences (programme forthcoming) will be punctuated by exchanges with wood craftsmen specialising in the manufacture of musical instruments.
The day will end with the opening of the exhibition and a concert (12 June).
