The PCMA-Ifao Post-doctoral fellowship in Cairo
Call for applications
Partenaire(s) de l’Ifao : PCMA
Langue : anglais.
The Institut français d'archéologie orientale (Ifao) and the Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology, University of Warsaw (PCMA) invite applications for a 24-months Post-Doctoral Fellowship, starting 1st May 2025 until 30th April 2027.
The Post-Doctoral Fellow will organize an international two-day conference on a subject
in relation with Ancient and Medieval Northeastern Africa (Egypt and/or Nubia). The application must outline the state of the art in the proposed subject and clearly present
an added value to the studies of past societies. We encourage cross-disciplinary proposals offering a wider, comparative perspective of the area under study.
The conference will take place in Cairo in fall 2025. Following the conference, the Post-Doctoral Fellow will be in charge of the edition of the proceedings and will submit the manuscript for approval by the joint IFAO-PCMA editorial committee.
During the entire course of the appointment, the Fellow will take part in the scientific activities of IFAO and PCMA and carry out his/her own research. In this context, the Fellow will organize a series of at least four scientific meetings in 2026, two in PCMA and two in IFAO (open lectures, seminars or workshops inviting specialists working in Egypt). The events should be related to the main subject of the Fellowship. All four meetings will take place after the two-day conference mentioned above. The application must present the idea behind the series.
The Fellow will be also strongly encouraged to prepare and submit his/her own paper in one of the scientific journals related to their field of work.
The Fellow is expected to stay in Cairo during the Fellowship and divide his/her time equally between the PCMA and IFAO. There is no accommodation provided in the program. The position is a grant, not an employment position, according to Polish and French regulations. The stipend for the entire period of the Fellowship is 48 000,00 Euros in total, paid on a monthly basis.
Qualifications:
The applicant must hold a doctoral degree (Ph.D.) in a discipline related to the study of Ancient and Medieval Northeastern Africa and/or the Near East for maximum 7 years as of 1st May 2025. The Fellowship is open for applicants of all nationalities.
The application will include:
- Cover letter
- Max. 5-pages proposal in English outlining:
- the aim and structure of the conference, including the names and paper topics of at least four key participants who have agreed to take part in the event. For budgetary reasons the IFAO and PCMA will cover the costs of travel and accommodation of no more than four invited speakers;
- idea behind the series of four scientific meetings (open lectures, seminars or workshops);
- plans for publication (the conference proceedings and an article in a scientific journal).
- Curriculum vitae, including the list of publications.
- The names and contact information (including emails) for three referees.
Applications should be sent as a single pdf file to t.kania2@uw.edu.pl and direction@ifao.egnet.net and detudes@ifao.egnet.net before 31st January 2025, 2:00 PM, Cairo time. All incomplete or late applications will be declared ineligible and excluded from the selection process. All eligible applications will be reviewed by external experts who will provide
an assessment of the applicant’s research excellence and the quality of the proposal. The final selection will be made by a Selection Committee composed of the directors of the IFAO and PCMA or their representative and two external experts, on the basis of external reviews and the assessment of the committee members.
