Monks and Plants: An Archaeobotanical Study of Monastic Egypt
Dr Mennat-Allah El Dorry, PCMA-IFAO Postdoctoral Fellow
Partenaire(s) de l’Ifao : Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology UW
Langue : anglais.
Plants are at the heart of daily activities in the pre-plastic world. The study of archaeobotanical plant remains provides an insight into agricultural practices, trade of plant-based commodities, and vegetarian subsistence. This talk will present results of archaeobotanical analysis undertaken at two monastic settlements across. In the north, the monastic settlement of John the Little in Wady al-Natrun provided a full corpus of archaeobotanical material related to food processing, wine production, fuelling ovens, and foddering animals. In the south, Dayr Anba Hadra in Aswan provided further evidence of wine production in monasteries, in addition to a few unusual finds.
