Centres and Peripheries - Reflections on a complicated relation in Ancient Egypt

Dietrich Raue

Langue : anglais.

Abstract

Egypt is globally recognised for its monumental architecture and long-lived state structures. Less visible, yet equally formative, are the processes of negotiation between (city) centres and peripheries. These dynamics shaped material culture, influenced the pace and direction of morphological change — such as in ceramics — and prompted shifts in architectural design. However, many of these developments remain insufficiently understood. This is especially true for periods of strong central authority between the 3rd and the mid-1st millennium BC, where interpretative paradigms have often projected models from one centre onto another without adequate scrutiny.

The lecture is open to the public, in the limit of availableand will be broadcasted live on the Ifao YouTube channel.

IFAO Lectures series aim to transmit the results of current or very recent research by confirmed researchers. They are mainly animated by researchers involved in IFAO's various scientific programs and projects during their stay at the Institute. They are also sometimes the occasion for presentations, by their authors, of books recently published by the IFAO.

IFAO Lectures series are traditionally held on Wednesday afternoons, in French or English.
