A Monumental picture book
Investigating Painted Texts and Images in the Tomb of Sennefer (TT 96)
Gabriele Pieke
Langue : anglais.
In the framework of the Academy of Egyptian images: Approach, Analysis, Dissemination, Gabriele Pieke is giving a lecture entitled "A Monumental picture book, Investigating Painted Texts and Images in the Tomb of Sennefer (TT 96)".
Abstract:
The tomb of Sennefer in Sheikh Abd el-Gurna (TT 96) is well known for its decorated burial chamber, whereas its cult chapel itself is still unpublished. In the context of the Mission Archéologique belge dans la Nécropole Thébaine (MANT) the project “Painters and Painting in the Theban Necropolis during the 18th Dynasty“ (FNRS – University of Liège) aims among others at documenting and analysing the painting practices and work organisation in the tomb of Sennefer.
Despite the poor state of preservation, the murals render much information about the techniques and procedures of the ancient painters, the sequence of their work and even the number of artists involved and their level of experience. Further, the in-depth study of the techniques of decoration revealed an ongoing process of changes and supplementations in the tomb’s decoration and architecture. The long process of making the tomb decoration and the significant number of modification required a constant out of the box thinking and adjustments from the creators to perpetually find new and fitting solutions.

IFAO Lectures series aim to transmit the results of current or very recent research by confirmed researchers. They are mainly animated by researchers involved in IFAO's various scientific programs and projects during their stay at the Institute. They are also sometimes the occasion for presentations, by their authors, of books recently published by the IFAO.
IFAO Lectures series are traditionally held on Wednesday afternoons, in French or English.
