Exploring Greek Documentary Papyri from the Fouad Collection at the Ifao

Abstract:
The lecture will explore some of the recently published Greek documentary papyri from the Fouad Collection housed at the Institut Français d'Archéologie Orientale (Ifao). The bulk of the papyri that constitute the Fouad Collection was purchased in 1930 by King Fouad I of Egypt and donated to the Societe royale egyptienne de papyrologie (later known as Societe Fouad I de Papyrologie). The collection was augmented through further purchases or donations in the following years, and has been deposited at the Ifao since 1961.
These papyri, dating from the early Roman period of Egyptian history, originate from the Arsinoite, Oxyrhynchite and Lykopolite nomes. They are a mixture of private and public documents: declarations, petitions, contracts, and receipts. They offer valuable insights into the daily life, administration, economy, and society of ancient Egypt under Greek and Roman rule and mirror the everyday life of different strata of the society and the daily operations of the local provincial administration in Roman Egypt.
The lecture will also give a brief introduction to the history of the collection acquisitions, provenance, previous publications and ongoing work. At the end of the lecture, I will be sharing some exciting updates regarding the recent discoveries on the whereabouts of several missing pieces from the Fouad Collection.
Mohamed Gaber Elmaghrabi is a Professor of Greco-Roman History and civilization, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Archaeology and Languages, Matrouh University, and Corresponding Member of the German Archaeological Institute. He has just published ’Documentary Papyri from the Fouad Collection at the Institut Français dʼArchéologie Orientale (P.Fouad II 90–100)’ at the Ifao in 2024.

Les conférences de l'Ifao ont pour objectif la transmission des résultats des recherches en cours ou très récentes, par des chercheurs confirmés. Y sont conviés essentiellement les chercheurs impliqués dans les différentes opérations scientifiques de l'Ifao lors de leur passage par l'Institut. ِElles sont également parfois le lieu de présentation d'ouvrages récemment parus à l'Ifao par leurs autheurs. Les conférences de l'Ifao ont lieu traditionnellement les mercredis aprés-midis, en français ou en anglais.
IFAO Lectures series aim to transmit the results of current or very recent research by confirmed researchers. They are mainly animated by researchers involved in IFAO's various scientific programs and projects during their stay at the Institute. They are also sometimes the occasion for presentations, by their authors, of books recently published by the IFAO.
IFAO Lectures series are traditionally held on Wednesday afternoons, in French or English.
