The Ceremonies and Protocols in Egypt 1805-1952

The 6th session of the Ifao Research Seminar of this academic year 2022/2023, features Sarah Fathalla Gaara, assistant lecturer at Ain Shams University and former Ifao fellow. It will be introduced and moderated by Mercedes Volait, Director of research at the CNRS.
The seminar is open to all interested parties, both in presentia, subject to availability, and remotely on the Ifao YouTube channel.
ABSTRACT
King Fārūq; the king of Egypt and Sudan had recognized that the royal Egyptian protocol is orally kept by certain persons in the royal palace without being documented in a written form. A royal initiative took place to release an official book for the protocols, in which the book of “al-Marasim” was published in 1946, and one year later, a French version was produced under the title “Protocles”. The aim of this seminar is to present the monarchial ceremonies and protocols in Egypt between 1805-1952, as well as the influence of the political situation of the country on them, by investigating the official book of “al-Marasim”, in addition to various sources, documents and press archives.
Sarah Fathalla Gaara is assistant lecturer at Ain Shams University, and a team member in the digital humanities project of “Digital-Cairo” which is a sub-project of "La fabrique du Caire moderne" (Ifao-InVisu-Duke U). She had received the IFAO PhD followership for year 2022 and she was an assistant researcher in the project La fabrique du Caire moderne for the years 2019-2022. Her research is based on modern Egypt, with especial focus on the dynasty of Mohamed Ali (1805-1952).

Le séminaire de recherche de l'Ifao est un lieu d'échange et de dialogue scientifique sur les recherches en cours sur l'Egypte, l'ensemble du Proche-Orient ou parfois les espaces plus vastes dans lesquels s'inscrit l'histoire égyptienne. Y sont présentées et discutées par un ou plusieurs intervenants les recherches menées par les membres de la communauté scientifique de l'Ifao, ainsi que par des chercheurs invités.
Le séminaire vise tout à la fois à exposer et confronter des savoirs, et à s'interroger sur des questions d'ordre méthodologique (appréhension du terrain, écriture, interdisciplinarité, humanités numériques, comparatisme, etc.).
Modalités : présentiel, distanciel ou mode hybride, le mercredi après-midi, de 16 à 18h (horaire susceptible d'être modifié en fonction de l'actualité).
Lieu : salle de conférence de l'Ifao.
