According to the religious sources and oral tradition the Holy Family, throughout their stay in Egypt, which lasted for about three-and-half years, moved through many towns in Upper and Lower Egypt. Many of the details of the journey of the Holy Family in Egypt are chronicled in a Mimar (manuscript) by Pope Theophilus, 23rd Patriarch of Alexandria, who received these details during an apparition of the Holy Virgin Mary. Many churches and monasteries were built in the locations, which have been blessed by the visit of the Holy Family, and many miracles took place in these locations. These Coptic churches are considered the oldest and among the holiest of all churches in Egypt and the world. The feast of the entry of the Holy Family to Egypt is celebrated every year on the first of June. Coptic art narrates this important event on different materials; mural paintings in monastic churches, textiles, metal objects and manuscripts. There are also a number of Coptic icons depict the details of the journey which reflect different schools of art.

يعد مجيء العائلة المقدسة لمصر من اهم الاحداث التي جرت على ارض مصرنا الغالية على مدار تاريخها الطويل، و تحتفل مصر بحضور العائلة المقدسة اليها في اول يونيو من كل عام ، وتعتمد المصادر الرئيسية للرحلة فضلا عما جاء في الكتب المقدسة، على السنكسار والدفنار والميامر والمخطوطات وتاريخ البطاركة وكتابات الاباء بالإضافة الى التراث الشفهي، ولم تكن رحلة العائلة المقدسة لمصر بالأمر الهين، بل جاءت رحلة شاقة، ووصلنا تحف أثرية تحكى لنا هذه الرحلة سواء كانت مرسومة على جداريات الكنائس او قطع النسيج القبطي او قطع من المعادن مثل المسارج او المخطوطات، اما بالنسبة للأيقونات فتوجد نماذج عديده تصور هذا الحدث الهام يعكس المدارس الفنية المختلفة.

The RIWAQ seminars is a cooperation between IFAO and the Faculty of Archaeology, Aïn Shams University.
