Writing and rewriting Coptic History in Arabic (11th-16th cent.)
New insights on Copto-Arabic historiography
Perrine Pilette
Langue : anglais.
Abstract
From the Fatimid period onwards, Copts began documenting history in Arabic, presenting it through the perspective of the Church. This process involved both the translation of earlier Coptic sources and the composition of entirely new texts in Arabic. The result of these efforts was the History of the Patriarchs of Alexandria, considered the official chronicle of the Church, which serves as a repository of extensive – and often unique – information about the history of Egypt and the broader Middle East.
Over time, this material was repeatedly adapted, rewritten, as well as reframed in subsequent works of the Copto-Arabic historiographical tradition, reflecting evolving historical contexts and ensuring the material's relevance across time.
This talk will present recent research conducted on this corpus, exploring its numerous ramifications and its reception, including by Muslim historiographers. It will also further examine the manuscripts and highlight the distinctive characteristics of their language.
Perrine Pilette is a CNRS researcher specializing in medieval Christian Arabic texts from Egypt, with a focus on Coptic-Arabic historiography. She works on the critical editions and translations of these texts, also examining aspects such as Middle Arabic, codicology, and the translation of Coptic texts into Arabic. Her research further explores the socio-political context of medieval Egypt and the transmission of knowledge within this framework.

IFAO Lectures series aim to transmit the results of current or very recent research by confirmed researchers. They are mainly animated by researchers involved in IFAO's various scientific programs and projects during their stay at the Institute. They are also sometimes the occasion for presentations, by their authors, of books recently published by the IFAO.
IFAO Lectures series are traditionally held on Wednesday afternoons, in French or English.
