The lecture specifically clarifies the function of the Ṣulaībiyah dome in a new vision; the first part concerning the function gives a criticized view on what was introduced as previous studies on the function of the dome specially the opinion which noted that it is mostly “burial dome”. Then the study also displays a new vision concerns the historical, architectural, and urban data related to the architecture of Samarra. The study gives a new interpretation for the function of the dome according to these data.

The second part deals with the dating of the dome which is directly connected to its function according to the previous data especially that the functional explanation is mainly linked to some important events concerning the circumstances upon the foundation of Samarra, and the wars it was involved. The final result of the research clarifies the sorts and types of the constructions that were built in the First Abbasid Era; however, nothing existed except the Ṣulaībiyah dome as a unique example of monuments remained from this period.

The display of the architectural data and the accurate description of the dome explore the link between the architectural style of the dome and what took place in the first Abbasid era such as the intellectual movement which shows the translation of the old heritage especially the Greek cultural heritage. The architectural data reveals also the connection between the octagonal design of the dome and the autobiography of its founder. It also explores that the octagonal plan of the dome is different from that of the Dome of the Rock; the matter that gives an important discussion on the methodology of rooting that followed in the study of Islamic Architecture.

تتناول هذه المحاضرة قضية تحديد وظيفة قبة الصليبية في إطار رؤية جديدة، ففي المحور الأول المرتبط بالوظيفة نطرح بالنقد ما ذُكر من آراء سابقة حول وظيفة هذه القبة وبخاصة الرأي السائد الذي يحدد وظيفتها بأنها "قبة دفن" ، ثم نعرض رؤية جديدة في إطار معطيات تاريخيةـ معمارية وعمرانية ترتبط بعمران مدينة سامراء وتنتهي إلى طرح تفسير جديد لوظيفة هذه القبة ارتباطا بهذه المعطيات.

أما المحور الثاني المرتبط بتأريخ القبة فهو يرتبط ارتباطا عضويا بتفسير وظيفتها في ضوء المعطيات السابقة سيما وأن التفسير الوظيفي مرتبط بأحداث تاريخية مهمة لظروف نشأة مدينة سامراء، وما خاضته الدولة العباسية من حروب.

والنتيجة النهائية للبحث تكشف عن نوعية مهمة من المنشآت المعمارية التي كانت قائمة في العصر العباسي الأول ولم يتبق منها سوى قبة الصليبية كنموذج وحيد باق من هذا العصر.

كما أن عرض المعطيات المعمارية في إطار وصف هندسي دقيق محدد يكشف ارتباط الشكل المعماري للقبة بما حدث في العصر العباسي الأول من حركة معرفية اعتمدت على ترجمة التراث القديم وبخاصة التراث اليوناني، كما يكشف عن ارتباط بين فكرة التصميم المثمن للقبة والسيرة الذاتية والتاريخية لمنشئها. ويكشف أيضا عن أن تخطيط القبة المثمن يختلف في تنفيذه عن تخطيط قبة الصخرة وهو ما يطرح مناقشة مهمة عن منهجية التأصيل المتبعة في دراسة العمارة الإسلامية.
