IFAO

Depuis les travaux de terrain d’Abd el-Mohsen el-Khachab (CSA), qui publia et fouilla bon nombre d’édifices de bain de type grec dans les années 1940 à 1970, et proposa une première synthèse sur ce thème, de nombreux établissements balnéaires antiques ont été mis au jour sur l’ensemble du territoire égyptien. Par ailleurs, les études portant sur les bains plus récents, en particulier les hammams médiévaux et modernes, ont démontré leur intérêt historique et archéologique. Leur valeur patrimoniale est également en cours de reconnaissance, comme en témoigne la rénovation récente du hammam mamluk du sultan al-Ashraf, en plein cœur du Caire islamique.

En 2006, le programme ANR Balnéorient, dirigé par M.-Fr. Boussac, et auquel s’est associé l’Ifao, a entamé l’étude globale du bain collectif en Orient (Proche-Orient, Égypte et péninsule Arabique). Un premier colloque, organisé à Alexandrie la même année, a permis de faire le point sur l’état de nos connaissances pour l’Égypte et a paru en 2009 aux presses de l’Ifao.

Depuis, les découvertes d’établissements balnéaires n’ont pas cessé en Égypte, soulignant l’intérêt de l’étude. L’Ifao a ainsi intégré à ses projets de recherche un programme intitulé « Bains antiques et médiévaux ». Pour rendre compte des nouvelles trouvailles, il nous est apparu utile d’organiser une rencontre centrée sur les données archéologiques, qui bénéficiera des acquis des échanges développés, à une échelle plus large, dans le cadre de Balnéorient.

Journée d’études

Cette journée d’études a pour but premier de présenter une documentation nouvelle, souvent inédite et tirée directement du terrain, portant sur toutes les périodes d’existence du bain collectif en Égypte, depuis son introduction par les Gréco-Macédoniens à la fin du IVe s. av. J.-C. jusqu’aux heures de gloire du hammam arabe. Elle réunira une dizaine de chercheurs, Égyptiens, Français, Européens, qui exposeront le résultat de leurs travaux portant sur un édifice particulier, dans des régions aussi diverses que l’arrière-pays alexandrin, le Caire, la Haute Égypte ou les déserts occidentaux. Une place sera aussi offerte à des surveys régionaux, pour compléter l’atlas archéologique des bains en Égypte et mesurer la diffusion de ces édifices, et donc des pratiques sous-tendues, sur ce territoire.

Atelier collectif

La partie documentaire (présentation de nouveaux bâtiments) débouchera sur un atelier collectif destiné à harmoniser l’analyse et la présentation des bâtiments, nécessaire pour une étude sur la longue durée de ce type d’édifices. A cette fin seront présentés les outils d’enregistrement, de classement et d’interprétation mis en œuvre au sein du programme Balnéorient et de l’Ifao.

Since the fieldworks of Abd el-Mohsen el-Khachab (SCA), who published and excavated many Greek-like baths in the 1940s till the 1970s and proposed a first synthesis on this topic, numerous antique bathing buildings were brought to light in the whole Egyptian territory. Besides, the studies concerning the more recent baths, medieval and modern hammams in particular, have demonstrated their historic and archaeological interest. Their patrimonial value is also in the process of being recognized, as shown by the newly restored mamluk hammam of al-Ashraf located in the heart of Islamic Cairo.

In 2006, the ANR Balnéorient program, led by M.-Fr. Boussac in partnership with Ifao, began the global study on collective bath in the East (Middle East, Egypt and Arabian Peninsula). A first colloquium, held in Alexandria the same year, allowed to review the state of the evidence for Egypt; it was published in 2009 in the Ifao press.

Since, the discoveries of baths in Egypt did not stop, underlining the interest of the study. Ifao also integrated into its researches a program entitled "Antique and Medieval Baths". In order to report new finds, it seems necessary to organize a meeting focused on archaeological data, which will benefit from experiences of the previous meetings and from exchanges developed, in a wider scale, within the framework of the Balnéorient program.

Conference

The first aim of this meeting is to present a new documentation, often unpublished and directly taken from the field, concerning all the periods where collective bath was in use in Egypt, since its introduction by the Greco-Macedonians at the end of the 4th Century BC till the hours of glory of the Arabic hammam. It will gather Egyptians, French and Europeans scholars who will expose the results of their works concerning a particular building in various areas such as Alexandria’s region, Cairo, Upper Egypt or western deserts. A place will also be offered to regional surveys, in order to complete the archaeological atlas of baths in Egypt and to measure the spread of these structures, and therefore the underlain practices on this territory.

Workshop

The documentary part (presentation of new buildings) will be followed by a collective workshop intended to bring into line the analysis and the presentation of bath buildings, an essential effort for a long-term study. To that purpose, recording, classification and interpretation tools, created within the Balnéorient program and with the help of the Ifao, will be presented.
