Asbstract

Before modern times no source comes directly from peasants: rural societies look like a ‘world of silence’. Written sources consider rural societies from far and above, mostly through fiscal, military or security lens. On another side, the shape of the countryside results from transformations accumulated through centuries, so that the current landscape offers an unvaluable document about past times. The conference will show through some selected examples how the sources at our disposal challenge the historians who aim to study rural society during the pre-modern period.

لم تتوفر لدينا، قبل العصر الحديث، مصادر عن الريف جاءت من أهل الريف أنفسهم: كانت المجتمعات الريفية تبدو وكأنها "عالم من الصمت". في حين أن المصادر المكتوبة حول المجتمعات الريفية صيغت، في الغالب، من خلال مناظير مالية وعسكرية وأمنية، ومن ثم جاءت صياغتها من بعيد ومن أعلى. من ناحية أخرى ، فإن شكل الريف ناتج عن التحولات المتراكمة عبر القرون ، لذا فإن وضع الريف الحالي يعد وثيقة قيمة عن العصور الماضية. وهذه المداخلة ستوضح، من خلال بعض النماذج، كيف تمكننا المصادر المتاحة لدينا من النعاطي مع أعمال المؤرخين الذين يدرسون المجتمع الريفي خلال العصر ما قبل الحديث.

Avant l’époque contemporaine, aucune source n’émane directement du monde des campagnes : la société rurale est le monde du silence. Les sources écrites qui parlent des paysans les considèrent de très haut et de très loin, et le plus souvent en fonction des préoccupations du pouvoir : l’impôt, l’ordre, le militaire. D’un autre côté, les campagnes actuelles résultent des transformations millénaires du paysage, et celui-ci peut être pris comme une source extraordinaire sur les siècles passés. La conférence vise à travers quelques exemples à montrer quels défis posent les sources à la disposition de l’historien qui souhaite travailler sur les campagnes à l’époque pré-moderne.

The seminar "Reading historical documents from Egypt, Medieval till modern times", "Qira'at", literally means "readings, interpretations", is organized by Magdi Guirguis and Frédéric Abécassis who invite researchers who can express themselves in Arabic and present documents they comment. The presentation is usually followed by comments from the organizers and a discussion with the audience.

يعكس عنوان هذه السلسلة من الندوات "قراءات" تعدد تفسيرات الوثائق التاريخية، عنوان الندوة الكامل هو "قراءة الوثائق التاريخية من مصر من العصور الوسطى حتى العصر الحديث". ينظم الندوة مجدي جرجس وفريديريك أبيكاسيس الذين يدعون باحثين يمكنهم التعبير عن أنفسهم باللغة العربية وتقديم أحد الوثائق والتعليق عليها. عادة ما يتبع العرض التقديمي تعليقات من المنظمين ومناقشة مع الجمهور.
