Magdi Guirguis received his PhD from the Faculty of Arts at Cairo University. Currently he is associate professor at Kafrelsheikh University. Guirguis has published widely in Arabic in the field of Social History, and Islamic law (sharia). Among his publications in English are: An Armenian Artist in Ottoman Egypt: Yuhanna al-Armani and His Coptic Icons, AUC Press, 2008; (co-author with Nelly Van doorn-Harder), The Emergence of the Modern Coptic Papacy, in the series The Popes of Egypt, editors: Stephen Davis and Gawdat Gabra, AUC Press, volume III, 2011. He was a EUME Fellow from 2006 to 2007. From October 2012 to spring 2014 he was a Fellow of the Alexander-von-Humboldt-Stiftung. Right now he is the Scientific collaborator of the French Institute for the Oriental Archaeology, Institut français d’archéologie orientale (IFAO).
Séminaire Qira'ât
The seminar "Reading historical documents from Egypt, Medieval till modern times", "Qira'at", literally means "readings, interpretations", is organized by Magdi Guirguis and Frédéric Abécassis who invite researchers who can express themselves in Arabic and present documents they comment. The presentation is usually followed by comments from the organizers and a discussion with the audience.
يعكس عنوان هذه السلسلة من الندوات "قراءات" تعدد تفسيرات الوثائق التاريخية، عنوان الندوة الكامل هو "قراءة الوثائق التاريخية من مصر من العصور الوسطى حتى العصر الحديث". ينظم الندوة مجدي جرجس وفريديريك أبيكاسيس الذين يدعون باحثين يمكنهم التعبير عن أنفسهم باللغة العربية وتقديم أحد الوثائق والتعليق عليها. عادة ما يتبع العرض التقديمي تعليقات من المنظمين ومناقشة مع الجمهور.
