The 8th session of the Ifao Research Seminar of this academic year 2022/2023, features Carmen Gómez Orts, PhD candidate at the University of Seville. It will be introduced and moderated by Abbès Zouache, Director of studies at the Ifao.
The seminar is open to all interested parties, both in presentia, subject to availability, and remotely on the Ifao YouTube channel.
Abstract :
The "Kitāb Mīzān al-Ṭabīb" is a manuscript that has been attributed to the famous Andalusian pharmacologist Ibn al-Bayṭār (d. 1248). It is believed to be a unicum, which only copy is allocated in Uppsala (Sweden). Through the edition, translation into Spanish and study of this medical-pharmachological work, we are contributing to the History of Medicine by bringing to light a practical guide to treat a large variety of illnesses from the Middle Ages. In this dissertation I discuss its given authorship as well as the existence of other copies that have been unknown until today.
Carmen Gómez graduated from the University of Granada in Arabic and Islamic Studies, and holds a master’s degree in Translation and Interculturality from the University of Seville. In the meantime she has lived in Jordan, Morocco and Egypt pursuing her languages’ career. She is currently carrying out the third year of her PhD in Philology. Her research is specialized in the edition and translation of a medieval medical-pharmacological Islamic text.

Le séminaire de recherche de l'Ifao est un lieu d'échange et de dialogue scientifique sur les recherches en cours sur l'Egypte, l'ensemble du Proche-Orient ou parfois les espaces plus vastes dans lesquels s'inscrit l'histoire égyptienne. Y sont présentées et discutées par un ou plusieurs intervenants les recherches menées par les membres de la communauté scientifique de l'Ifao, ainsi que par des chercheurs invités.
Le séminaire vise tout à la fois à exposer et confronter des savoirs, et à s'interroger sur des questions d'ordre méthodologique (appréhension du terrain, écriture, interdisciplinarité, humanités numériques, comparatisme, etc.).
Modalités : présentiel, distanciel ou mode hybride, le mercredi après-midi, de 16 à 18h (horaire susceptible d'être modifié en fonction de l'actualité).
Lieu : salle de conférence de l'Ifao.
