XIIth International Congress of Egyptologists (Cairo, 3-8 November 2019).The XIIth International Congress of Egyptologists, organised by the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities, took place in Cairo from 3 to 8 November 2019, in the halls of the Mena House hotel, at the foot of the pyramids. It was the occasion for intense exchanges around the latest scientific advances made by Egyptologists of the world. The IFAO was involved in various capacities, through conferences presented by its members (F. Albert, L. Medini, F. Relats-Montserrat, A. Pillon), and through the involvement of the Director of the IFAO in its scientific committee. A stall selling the publications of IFAO was particularly well attended. A gala dinner was co-organised by the Ministry of Antiquities and the foreign archaeological institutes, including IFAO, on 5 November at the Manial Palace. Exhibition French Archaeology in Egypt. Egyptian Museum in Cairo 18 December 2019 – 18 February 2020As part of the celebration of the France-Egypt 2019 year, an exhibition entitled Archéologie Française en Égypte. Recherche, coopération, innovation was inaugurated at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo on 18 December 2019 in the presence of H.E. the Minister of Antiquities Dr Khaled El-Enany and the French Ambassador to Egypt, H.E. Stéphane Romatet. The exhibition presented a thematic and chronological panorama of the archaeological work done by the institutions active within French archaeology in Egypt (IFAO, CEAlex, CFEETK, MAFTO, Musée du Louvre, INRAP, IRD). Key-objects of sites currently under excavation were presented, among which the exceptional Papyri of the Wadi el-Jarf, the Tetiânkh stela discovered in 2018 in the Assasif, and the Coptic wooden corbels from the excavations of the Bawit Monastery. The book French Archaeology in Egypt, published by the IFAO by Laurent Coulon and Mélanie Cressent, will be available for sale from March 2020. Field archaeology training January-March 2020: Egyptian ceramics from the Pharaonic era to the medieval eraFor two weeks, 22 young Egyptian academic researchers and inspectors from the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities participated in a ceramology course at the IFAO. This residential part of the internship, coordinated by Julie Monchamp and Sylvie Marchand, presented, for its theoretical part, a chronological tour of Egyptian ceramics, while other sessions tackled the methodological aspects of ceramic studies, from their excavations to their publication, including the most recent restoration techniques, drawing, photographic documentation, and analysis of paste. The practical modelling session given by Jane Smythe was undoubtedly very successful among the trainees, as well as the visits to the Egyptian Museum and the Museum of Islamic Arts organised by the Institute. On site, all appreciated the drawing sessions supervised by Ayman Hussein, and the commitment of the trainers: Félix Relats-Montserrat, scientific member, Dr Ashraf al-Senussi, curator of the Karanis museum, Younis Ahmed, Ebeid M. Hamed and Hassan Mohammed, restorers of the IFAO. This collective work continued in the field, until the beginning of March, with a one-week practical training in the Luxor region, on three IFAO sites in small groups of five or six trainees. Irmgard Hein, Félix Relats-Montserrat, Sylvie Marchand, Zulema Barahona Mendieta and Catherine Defernez welcomed them to their worksites in Karnak, Karnak-North and Medamud for a more hands-on approach to ceramics in an archaeological context. Each year, this field archaeology course organised with the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities is an opportunity to mobilize the resources and skills of the IFAO and its members for the training of Egyptians scholars. |

Life at Mounira Palace
It is with great sadness that we inform you of the death of our colleague Abdel Moneim Saïd, which occurred suddenly in Paris, while he was travelling as a staff representative for the IFAO administration council. We extend our condolences to his family and loved ones.
A new face welcoming you at the receptionSince November 2019, the IFAO reception has had a facelift: Maha Yassin, who replaced George Habib, who has gone abroad. It is always with a smile that visitors to the IFAO are greeted, and with the same benevolent discretion that the accommodation service takes care of the comfort of the guests of the palace. Romans in EgyptA dozen scientific members of the French School of Rome responded to the invitation of their colleagues from Cairo and discovered the Nile Valley during their stay from 18 to 26 January. At a steady pace, they visited Cairo and Luxor, even with a trip to Alexandria, where Marie-Dominique Nenna welcomed them on behalf of the CEAlex, while the visit to the Karnak temple was led by Luc Gabolde, director of the CFEETK. By being their guide and tour operator, the scientific members demonstrated their skills as organisers and communicated their enthusiasm for their research fields. The informal interactions among the members during this visit resulted in a seminar "Synergies within the EFE", which once again demonstrated the concern of scientific members to be full-fledged actors in the life of the Schools and the network.
Senators at IFAOAs part of their visit to Egypt, a delegation from the Senate's France-Egypt friendship group visited IFAO on 12 February. Mrs. Catherine Morin-Desailly, senator of Seine-Maritime and president of this group, Mr. Hugues Saury, senator from Loiret, and Mr. Jean-Michel Houllegatte, senator from Manche, accompanied by Mrs. Anne-Laure Saint-Dizier, from the international relations and protocol department, were able to see on site the diversity of the Institute's activities and the exceptional nature of its heritage. The IFAO teams were keen to show their achievements and projects.
And some future seekers (of treasures)?Georges Castel led a workshop on 10 February for the pupils of a CM2 class at Albert Camus high school (New Giza) to discover the profession of archaeologist. The IFAO is developing vocations early! Audio-visuals at the rescue of communications among the networkAfter the interview of Dominique Bénazeth and Cédric Meurice, from the Musée du Louvre, in Paris, on the occasion of the release of Les fouilles à Baouît, second volume by Émile Chassinat, Joseph Ballu came to Cairo to shoot two short films: one on the printing press of IFAO and the other on the four publications of the Franco-Swiss mission of southern Saqqara (MafS) released in 2019.
Among the departures: - George Habib, in charge of the reception and accommodation service; - Navrik Cheiban, from the library; - Nermine Nabil, assistant librarian, left for a year at the Jerusalem Bible School; - Abdel Rahman El Nobi, production and quality manager at the printing works; - Nagui Sabri, chemical and nuclear engineer assistant to the head of the archaeometry centre; - Ahmed Mohamed El Sayed, print maker specialising in packaging, has retired. - Nadine Issa, service provider in the archaeometry pole since October 2019.
Among the new arrivals: - Maha Yassin, at the reception and accommodation service; - Ahmed Fathy, a new print maker, arrived in September; - Omnéya Abdelnabi became assistant librarian after being a service provider; - May Fouad, HR assistant, has been on maternity leave since mid-December replaced by Irini Aziz on vacation until March 2020. |

In the media
The inauguration of the exhibition Archéologie française en Egypte : Recherche, coopération, innovation, organised by IFAO in cooperation with the IFE at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo from 18 December 2019 to 18 February 2020, was widely covered by local and regional media. Many articles have been devoted to this event (for instance: Ahram online, Akhbar, Youm 7, Egypt Today, Masrawy, Sada El Balad, China News). The recent discovery made by the French Archaeological Mission in the Assassif led by Frédéric Colin (University of Strasbourg - IFAO) has also generated an enthusiastic response from the media. The mission which has been excavating for its 2nd season the funerary temple of Padiaménopé (TT 33), revealed three new wooden coffins covered with decorations and inscriptions. After the discoveries of the 2018 campaign, these confirm that the secrets of this Assassif necropolis are far from all being known. (Interview with Frédéric Colin for National Géographic). |
Interview with Hassan Selim, professor at Ayn Shams University and associate researcher at IFAO..
Can you tell us about your curriculum? I am a professor in the Department of Antiquities at Ayn Shams University, a member of the Scientific Committee of the Great Egyptian Museum, and of the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. I teach Fine Arts, the religions of the Old and New Kingdom, with an increasingly marked specialisation for museography. After leaving Cairo University, I studied architecture at the American University for six years, then at the University of Helwan, at the Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality. I then obtained a scholarship for doctoral studies in Germany in Freiburg. But the first position I held, the one I remain the most attached to, was Sohag, where I did my Master. I stayed there for 12 years. Being in this settlement in Middle Egypt gave me an overview of the antiquities from all over the country, from Lower to Upper Egypt. As a young assistant, I travelled to all the sites of Upper Egypt: Minya, Asyut, Sohag, Qena, Luxor, and Aswan, and interacted with great pleasure with the antiquities’ inspectors with whom I am still in touch. Having become an associate professor, my responsibilities at the GEM and at the Egyptian museum led me to need to be closer to the capital, and I obtained my transfer for the University of Ayn Shams.
My vocation was confirmed when I was a young student at the University of Cairo. I worked at the Antiquities Service. I started by volunteering at the Cairo museum. Then I took part in excavations in Maadi and in Saqqara. I then left the Ministry for graduate studies at the university. This led me to have an intimate knowledge of the world of the Ministry of Antiquities, and of the academic world in Egyptology. Not to mention my frequent attendance on sites. The one who got me into it was the late Ahmed Kadri, the initiator of revolutionary methods in conservation, whom I still consider to be my master today. Thanks to his practical pedagogy, I was able to contribute to the development of the Coptic museum, the Greco-Roman museum, and then the Egyptian Museum. I learnt through him the museology hands-on. He put me in contact with the best specialists in the discipline: Bernhard Wilhelm von Bothmer, Vivian Davies, Dietrich Wildung. The other figure who marked my career is Dr. Ali Radwan, a very famous Egyptologist. |

With their colleagues from the Department of Antiquities, they were for 25 years real awakeners of the heritage awareness of the Egyptians. I got to know Ahmed Kadri in the early 1980s when I was in my Masters’ degree. It started with the development of the Citadel as museum, then the various existing museums, where he gave me the opportunity to work on short contracts. And not just for me, he helped many students to access the sites and museums in the Cairo region that they wanted to discover.
Today there is a spectacular reopening of museums in Egypt. Can you give us a brief overview? The actions of Ahmed Kadri, Egypt’s Director of Antiquities in the 80s, were continued by Farouk Hosni and still continue nowadays. Today we have three museums in Cairo. The Egyptian Museum in Cairo, in Tahrir Square, is the national and historical museum, which must be preserved. In my opinion, it is a museum which must be dedicated to the masterpieces of Egyptian civilisation. The current order of the rooms will be respected, according to the chronology, but newly discovered objects would benefit from being displayed in its galleries. The Grand Egyptian Museum is the museum of the century, the museum that will be second to none. This is not just a place that exhibits antiquities, but it will be a real city centred on antiquities. The visitor’s route will first be monumental, with the statue of Rameses II, the columns of the temple of Ptah, and the statues from the CEAlex excavations. It will then be chronological and will address kingship through the succession of kings in Egypt, from the Old to the New Kingdom. The statues from the most prominent kings dating to these periods will be presented in an ascent, so that the visitor reaches a platform with a view on the pyramids, responding to the kings' statues. A second route will lead to the gallery in which objects from the tomb of Tutankhamun will be exhibited. This will be preceded by a contextualisation of the tomb within the Valley of the Kings. From there, a walkway will lead to a hall containing treasures of Egyptian heritage since Predynastic times, which have never been exposed. These objects, with no equal in foreign museums, are testimonies of religious life, political life, and social life of Ancient Egypt. The culture will be the subject of a complete gallery, following also the chronology. Religion too. There will also be beautiful statues from recent excavations uncovered in Egypt. And all these objects, coming from the storage magazines of the Cairo Museum, will finally be exhibited in a setting worth their while. The museum should open to the public at the end of October 2020. It will offer unique perspectives, notably that of an obelisk from Tanis, which will be hanging and seen from below. As for the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, it will host the royal mummies by the end of February, once the installation of the obelisk in Tahrir Square is complete. A room has just been opened there, dedicated to pottery, because the museum is located in the Fustat district, famous for the ceramic industry. This museum will be the cultural centre of the Egyptians, and a welcoming place of memory for all pupils and students of Egypt, with teachers directly trained in this content, and that from primary school. We need to awaken new vocations. The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization will be an opportunity for the pupils to work with their hands and a place to learn their ancestors’ habits. Besides, it's not all in Cairo. We must also think of the regions. The Mallawi museum, that of Minya, is already in place and is expected to open soon. All the capitals of governorates will have their museums: there are already those of Aswan and Luxor, Qena, Sohag. All will need to be upgraded to the museographical level of the museum of Luxor. Of course, the Greco-Roman Museum of Alexandria and the small museum of Béni Souef will also have to be reopened. Tourists from Sharm el-Sheikh and Hurghada will also get to learn about the ancient heritage of Egypt, and hopefully will want to visit the Nile Valley. All these museums are intended to be more accessible to Egyptians. We must awaken the heritage awareness of our compatriots in the country. One cannot build a contemporary civilisation without a good understanding of our past. Of course, this also implies a major effort to update textbooks, which has already been started.
What led you to attend the French Institute of Oriental Archaeology and what is your role there as an Egyptian scientific collaborator? It is a long story. The Egyptian scholar has three handicaps: difficulties in daily life, access to libraries, and difficulties in the organisation of work. You could say that IFAO is for these scholars a little window of Europe that enables to escape everyday worries. Entering the Institute means being able to work in a calm setting, far from worries, and in a privileged environment that remains deeply stimulating, thanks to the presence of colleagues. It is an invaluable aid to concentration and has allowed me to write a number of articles. When I was young, my relationships with IFAO resumed itself to the access to the library. To be frank, we Egyptian researchers felt a little relegated to a small room, every one remaining on their desk, and the relationships were not among people, but with books. Gradually, things changed, when the French Institute took an interest in the Egyptian scholars, showing them consideration, and inviting them to work in the big library room. It was not only a question of space or working conditions; it demonstrated a new welcoming attitude towards Egyptians. To all, the IFAO is an extremely selective institute, the best archaeological library available in Egypt, which has dubbed Egyptologists who then had an impactful career, like our current Minister of Tourism and Antiquities. The feeling of being part of an elite of researchers made us want to build more relationships with each other, while being in the place made us only work. The sharing of experiences concerning our excavation sites gave rise to strong professional connivances and helped us all to progress. This organic relationship between the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and IFAO is essential and must be preserved. It is important that students from all provinces can benefit from these contacts and training. But that is not enough; the Institute must also make itself known to students from all the provinces, from Alexandria to Aswan. And not only to the university members, it should be included within the inspectorates’ knowledge. For instance, we must teach the principles of scientific publication. My dream, basically, would be for the Institute to revive its origins and become a real Cairo School, like the École du Louvre: a place of popularisation which would not be reserved to graduates but would be open to the public, with courses, presenting our research, and sharing with everyone our love for antiquities and archaeology. |

Soufisme et Hadith dans l’Égypte ottomane. ʿAbd al-Raʾūf al-Munāwī (952/1545 - 1031/1622) RAPH 44; 568 p. The works of ʿAbd al-Raʾūf al-Munāwī (d. 1622) are one of the richest and most important of the 11th/17th century, in Arabic. He developed an interest in all the Islamic sciences of his time, which he mastered exceptionally well. As such, he embodies the ideal of encyclopedism and polymathy Egypt inherited from the Mamluk era. Al-Munāwī’s works do not lack of originality. Heir of many scholars marked by Sufism, al-Munāwī was at the same time able to present views that differ … [more] BIFAO 119 BIFAO 119; 360 p.
