Visites des chantiers de l’Ifao -

Nouvelles des chantiers et des programmes -

Ifao archaeological site visits

The first half of 2026 was marked by a series of site visits carried out by the IFAO directors to archaeological excavations active during this period of the year. These visits demonstrate the Institute’s commitment and its monitoring of its excavation sites. They enable the direction of the IFAO to assess the progress of the work (excavations, documentation, restoration, etc.), as well as to identify the needs of the teams in the field and to strengthen ties with the Egyptian and international partners involved.  Pierre Tallet, Director of the IFAO, and Abbès Zouache, Director of Studies, began this series of visits in early January with a visit to the archaeological mission at Ayn Soukhna, on the Red Sea coast. They then travelled to the Qal’at Sheikh Hammam site, near Qena, where significant discoveries have been made; these have been widely reported in the Egyptian press (see below). They then continued their tour with visits to archaeological sites in the oases of the Western Desert (the Balat/Ayn Asil mission and the Douch mission) as well as in the Fayoum, where they were able to observe the research being carried out by the Biahmu archaeological mission, recently established by Simon Connor and Ashraf Sobhi.

These field visits continued throughout February and March.  In particular, in early February, Pierre Tallet and Abbès Zouache travelled to Deir el-Medina, the famous village of the craftsmen who worked on the royal tombs, to Dendara, and to the site where lies the tomb of the priest-reader Padiamenope (TT 33). Upon their return to Cairo, they were able to assess the scale of the work being carried out by the Franco-Egyptian mission at the Cairo Citadel, which was conducting its third campaign under the direction of Simon Connor (IFAO) and Mohamed Ibrahim (Ayn Shams University). Finally, in April, Pierre Tallet visited the site of Taposiris-Plinthine, in the Mareotide region, where he was welcomed by the team led by Sylvain Dhennin.

News from archaeological sites and programmes

Eighteen field campaigns (archaeology and epigraphy) took place during the first half of 2026: those at Qal‘at Sheikh Hammâm, Ayn Soukhna, Balat, Deir el-Medina, TT 33, Biahmu (Fayoum), Osirian sanctuaries (Karnak), Dendara, Wadi Sannour, Islamic funerary stelae (Cairo), Coptos, the Cairo Citadel, Wadi el-Jarf, Bahareya, Philadelphia, Taposiris Magna and Plinthine, Medamoud and Qubbat al-Hawa. These sites illustrate the diversity of the areas in which the IFAO and its partners carry out their work.

Among the notable discoveries are those made by the members of the Sheikh al-Arab Hammam archaeological mission in the village of Al-Araki (Qena Governorate). This Franco-Egyptian mission is led by Professor Ahmad Al-Shoky, a research associate at the IFAO and Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Archaeology at Ain Shams University. The archaeologists have unearthed the remains of a residential town built of mud bricks and dating from the 18th century. They also discovered a Coptic cemetery from the Byzantine period. (See the press release from the Office of the Prime Minister of Egypt).

Life at the palace

Three highlights of fellowship and conviviality brought together IFAO staff and our partners over the course of this half-year. Pierre Tallet’s New Year’s greetings were shared over lunch and traditional galettes des rois on January 18th. The Ramadan Iftar, held on March 18th, was a particularly well-received event by staff and the many friends of IFAO who attended. Finally, the IFAO’s annual garden party took place on Thursday, May 21st. The evening, attended by the French Ambassador, Eric Chevallier, brought together around three hundred guests.

Education and training

A team of three trainers from the National Heritage Institute (Charlotte Rerrole, Anne-Marie Geffroy and Marie Petit) led a training session at IFAO in early January, aimed at conservators from IFAO’s archaeometry department, and focusing on the conservation of metals and bricks. This week-long session included theoretical and methodological lectures, practical demonstrations at the IFAO’s conservation laboratory, as well as a visit to the Cairo Museum and the Saqqara site. Anita Quiles, head of scientific projects at the IFAO’s archaeometry unit, helped to supervise the training.

On February 16th, 2026, the research and training workshop ‘Islamic Funerary Steles II: A Study of the Materiality of Steles’ was held at the IFAO. This workshop took place as part of Project 23121 ‘Islamic Funerary Stelae’, led by Abbès Zouache, assisted by Ahmad Al-Shoky and Anna Lagaron, a scientific member of the IFAO specialising in Arabic studies and responsible for the study of the stelae. In the morning, around twenty researchers, accompanied by the Institute’s directors, visited the Emir Qurqumas Complex, where around 4,500 stelae are stored. After presenting the collections, Anna Lagaron guided the visitors through the workflow and introduced them to the teams involved in the project: cleaning and restoration of the stelae, cataloguing, analysis, individual description, photography, followed by packaging and storage. The afternoon featured the launch of the book by Thierry Gregor and Bertrand Riba, entitled "De la trace à l’outil" (Fedora, 2025). The book was presented by Thierry Gregor, a renowned stonemason and associate researcher at the Centre for Advanced Studies in Medieval Civilisation (Poitiers, UMR 7302).

From June 28th to July 2nd, the Islamic Funerary Stelae project team organised an intensive training session at the Emir Qurqumas Complex, where the team is based.  This training, aimed at inspectors from the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities (MoTA), concluded with a social event attended by senior figures from the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, foremost among whom was Dr Hisham el-Leithy, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities. The distinguished guests were given a tour of the restoration and documentation laboratory, as well as the storage areas and training facilities. On this occasion, prior to the presentation of the ‘certificates of attendance’ (shahadât), the work carried out at the site of Emir Qurqumas, as well as in the Cairo necropolises, was presented by Abbès Zouache and Ahmad Al-Shoky.

Construction work

Construction work on the new Sauneron Library is now in full swing. During the first quarter of the year, work focused on driving the 186 foundation piles that support the building. By the end of June, the ground floor walls had been cast, and most of the first-floor slab had been completed.

Inside the palace, restoration and renovation work on the grand state staircase has restored this defining feature of the Mounira Palace to its former glory. Following a complete refurbishment of the woodwork, the ornate wrought-iron balustrades were cleaned and painted, and the carpets were replaced with exact replicas. This work completes the renovation of the entrance hall carried out last year. It was rounded off by the cleaning of the glass roof, carried out after the roof waterproofing works.

Some questions for Naglaa Boutros..

Naglaa Hamdi Boutros, you are head of scientific translation at Ifao, but you are also a historian and researcher, and you continue to publish your research whilst carrying out your duties at the IFAO.

Could you tell us about your academic and professional background?

I am a researcher and head of scientific translation at the IFAO, a research fellow at the Catholic University of Louvain (UCLouvain) and head of the Department of Eastern Christian Heritage at the Higher Institute of Coptic Studies. Alongside my research activities, I teach Coptic philology and history at several faculties and institutes of theology. I also supervise research projects and regularly participate in thesis examination boards at numerous Egyptian universities, notably the University of Alexandria. My academic career began at the Collège du Bon Pasteur before continuing at the Faculty of Languages (Al-Alsun) at Ain Shams University, where I studied languages and literature. I then went on to complete a Master’s degree, followed by a PhD in translation studies.
During this period, I joined the IFAO. From my very first days in this institution, I was deeply impressed by the scientific excellence it promoted and, more generally, by the intellectual atmosphere that prevailed there. I very quickly realised that I would spend the bulk of my professional life there. The many years spent working in publishing, in daily contact with scientific publications on Arabic and Coptic studies, and the reading, editing and editorial supervision of these works gradually instilled in me a desire to contribute myself to the advancement of knowledge.
It was with this in mind that I decided to undertake a second doctoral project. This second thesis was, this time, dedicated to Coptic-Arabic studies, a field of research that remains under-explored. Prepared at the Catholic University of Leuven, this multidisciplinary thesis combines history, philology and translation studies. It focuses on the reign of the sixth Fatimid caliph, Al-Ḥākim, through the critical edition, annotated translation and historical study of a manuscript belonging to the early recension of the History of the Patriarchs of Alexandria. This thesis proposes an interdisciplinary approach that brings together historical analysis and the philological study of the sources.

◼︎ Naglaa Hamdi Boutros

Subsequently, my career path at IFAO shifted towards scientific translation. I first took part in the “Open Traduction” project led by Frédéric Abécassis. A new milestone was reached with the appointment of Abbès Zouache as Director of Studies at IFAO in September 2021. Convinced of the strategic importance of translation for the dissemination of the humanities and social sciences, he took the initiative, with the support of Pierre Tallet, to create a Department of Scientific Translation. Since its creation, this department has continued to grow, diversifying its activities and strengthening its role in promoting scientific output.
Alongside these institutional responsibilities, I continue to carry out extensive research. I regularly publish academic articles in French, English and Arabic, help organise international symposia and conferences, and speak at numerous academic events in Egypt and abroad. I am involved in several international research projects, which promote multidisciplinary exchange and cooperation between institutions. I am also editor-in-chief of the Arabic section of the Bulletin critique des Annales Islamologiques (BCAI) and a member of the editorial board of several academic journals, including the Annales Islamologiques.
Another role I have carried out with great dedication at the IFAO is that of staff representative. I served as staff representative and trade union delegate for three terms, during which I worked to foster dialogue and mediation between management and staff members, with a view to helping maintain constructive working relationships.

The IFAO attaches great importance to the topic of translations, as evidenced by the very existence of the department you head.  Could you explain to our readers the remit of the Department of Scientific Translation and the nature of your work?

My research activities and my responsibilities as head of the Department of Scientific Translation are two aspects of my career that complement and enrich one another. In my view, scientific translation is much more than a mere tool for the transmission of knowledge: it constitutes a genuine space for mediation between languages, disciplines and scholarly traditions. As such, it naturally extends my research work, with which it shares the same demands for rigour, terminological precision and intellectual fidelity.
This approach is part of a long-standing tradition of scientific translation in Egypt. It is worth recalling that in the 19th century, during the reign of Muḥammad ʿAlī, translation was one of the main instruments of the state’s modernisation. The translation into Arabic of a large number of scientific, technical and administrative works made a decisive contribution to institutional reforms and played a part in the emergence of the Nahḍa. This historical experience serves as a reminder that the circulation of knowledge through translation is an essential driver of scientific and cultural development.
It is within this legacy that the work of the IFAO’s Department of Scientific Translation is situated. I have been fortunate to fulfil these responsibilities under the leadership of Pierre Tallet and Abbès Zouache, both of whom are deeply convinced that the dissemination of scientific knowledge cannot be fully realised without a genuine commitment to translation. Their commitment to making academic work accessible to Arabic-speaking researchers – who often face the barrier of publications written in foreign languages – has contributed significantly to the department’s development and influence. Languages are unrivalled vehicles of culture! Furthermore, the creation of the department forms part of a broader strategy aimed at further enhancing, if at all possible, the IFAO’s integration into its Egyptian environment. Courses in Egyptian Arabic are offered there to non-Arabic-speaking staff, as are French courses to those who have insufficient knowledge of the language. The IFAO has become a sort of ‘scientific, linguistic and cultural hub’ focused on Egyptian society. This is very much in evidence: never, no doubt, in recent decades has Egyptian-French interaction been so dynamic, profound and intense.
The department’s primary mission is to provide Arabic translations of works of a high scientific standard, in order to make the latest findings from international research accessible. This work is complemented by a significant amount of additional activity, which includes, in particular, the translation of abstracts and keywords for all articles published in IFAO's journals into French, English and Arabic. All the Institute’s recent publications thus feature a trilingual summary, reflecting this commitment to openness and the dissemination of knowledge.
The expertise developed within the department is also made available to other academic institutions, notably through the provision of translations for specialist journals, such as the Revue des mondes musulmans et de la Méditerranée (REMMM).
Alongside these activities, the department fulfils a particularly important educational role. It regularly welcomes students and young translators of various nationalities, offering them guidance tailored to the specific requirements of academic translation. This educational focus has gradually been strengthened through the establishment of institutional partnerships, notably with the National Centre for Translation in Egypt and Saint Joseph University in Beirut. These collaborations reflect a commitment to making academic translation not only a means of disseminating knowledge, but also a field for training, international cooperation and skills development.

What are the prospects and plans for the Department of Scientific Translation?

The rise of artificial intelligence is profoundly transforming the translation profession by changing professional practices and the skills required. This development poses a major challenge for translation professionals, who are being called upon to redefine their role to focus on proofreading, post-editing and terminology management. Several recent studies have also highlighted a decline in the appeal of translation courses, with many students viewing the profession as under threat from the rapid advances in artificial intelligence.
I do not entirely agree with this assessment. Whilst AI-based tools have achieved a remarkable level of performance, their limitations remain particularly evident in the field of scientific translation within the humanities and social sciences. Understanding concepts, intellectual traditions and terminological choices requires a level of expertise that current models cannot fully replicate. The quality of a scientific translation depends not only on the linguistic rendering of the text, but also on an in-depth understanding of the disciplinary issues and the contexts in which knowledge is produced.
This development has, however, profoundly transformed the way we train young translators. The skills taught today differ significantly from those that were prioritised a few years ago. In addition to linguistic and terminological expertise, students must now master artificial intelligence tools, critically evaluate their outputs, carry out post-editing, manage digital resources and engage in ethical reflection on the conditions for their use in scientific translation.
With this in mind, we wish to strengthen our training activities by developing new partnerships with universities and specialist institutions. At the same time, we are continuing to compile online terminology thesauri designed to support translators’ work and to standardise terminology across our disciplines. These tools are intended to facilitate the translation of a growing number of scientific works whilst maintaining the high intellectual standards and the terminological and scientific rigour that characterise IFAO’s publications.

Emotion, a term understood as synonymous with affect, sensitivity, feeling and sentiment, covers an extremely vast and complex field of reactions. The expression of emotions is therefore highly cultural.
