Un semestre riche en interactions scientifiques

Le premier semestre de l'année 2024 a été riche en travaux et interactions scientifiques. L'activité a été très dense, en particulier en matière archéologique, malgré des retards d'autorisation qui ont concerné quatre missions. Au total, douze missions ont pu mener leurs travaux.

D'ailleurs, le semestre a été couronné par la tenue, le mardi 11 juin à l'auditorium de l'Institut Français d'Egypte (IFE), de la 8e édition de la Journée d'archéologie France-Egypte.  Les directeurs des centres de recherche français sis en Egypte, Pierre Tallet (Ifao), Luc Gabolde et Ahmed al-Tahar (CFEETK) et Thomas Faucher (CEAlex) ont dressé un panorama des activités de leurs centres. En outre, Aurore Ciavatti a été invitée à donner une conférence sur les travaux qu'elle mène sur les marques des ouvriers royaux de la IVe dynastie. La journée a été clôturée par la diffusion du documentaire "Le monde de Khéops : l’archéologie expérimentale pour mieux comprendre l’histoire".

Associée ces dernières années à cette Journée de l'archéologie France-Egypte, la Garden-Party annuelle de l’année a été organisée à la fin de la même semaine, le jeudi 13 juin. La soirée, qui s'est déroulée en présence de l'ambassadeur de France, Eric Chevallier, a rassemblé environ trois cents invités, dont le nouveau secrétaire général du Conseil Suprême des Antiquités, Dr Mohamed Ismaïl, qui l'a inaugurée par un mot amical.

كان النصف الأول من عام ٢٠٢٤ غنيًا بالمعرفة والتفاعل العلمي. فقد كان هناك مستوى عالٍ من النشاط، لا سيما في المجال الأثري، على الرغم من التأخير في منح التصاريح لأربعة مشاريع. في المجمل، تمكنت اثنتا عشرة بعثة حفائر آثارية من تنفيذ أعمالها.

كانت أهم الأنشطة خلال فترة الستة أشهر هو اليوم الفرنسي المصري الثامن لعلم الآثار، الذي عقد يوم الثلاثاء ١١ يونيو في قاعة المركز الفرنسي في مصر. قدم مديرو المراكز البحثية الفرنسية في مصر، بيير تاليه (المعهد الفرنسي للآثار الشرقية)، ولوك جابولد، وأحمد الطاهر (مركز دراسات معابد الكرنك الفرنسي المصري)، وتوماس فوشيه (مركز الدراسات السكندرية) لمحة عامة عن أنشطة مراكزهم. كما تمت دعوة أورور سيافاتي لإلقاء محاضرة عن العمل الذي تقوم به حول آثار العمال الملكيين من الأسرة الرابعة. انتهى اليوم بعرض الفيلم الوثائقي "عالم خوفو: علم الآثار التجريبي من أجل فهم أفضل للتاريخ".

ارتبطت الحفلة السنوية للمعهد في السنوات الأخيرة باليوم الفرنسي المصري لعلم الآثار، حيث أقيمت في نهاية الأسبوع نفسه، يوم الخميس ١٣ يونيو. وقد حضر الحفل السفير الفرنسي بمصر، إيريك شوفالييه، وكذلك حوالي ثلاثمائة مدعو، من بينهم الأمين العام الجديد للمجلس الأعلى للآثار، الدكتور محمد إسماعيل، الذي افتتح الأمسية بكلمة ودية.

Nouvel accord-cadre de coopération avec l’Université Ayn Chams

Pendant le premier semestre, l'Ifao a aussi resserré ses liens avec les universités égyptiennes. Le 30 mai, à l’occasion du 12e colloque de l'Université Ayn Chams "Alliances et Partenariats", Pierre Tallet et Hossam Owais Tantawi, doyen de la Faculté d'archéologie, ont signé un accord de coopération en présence de personnalités diplomatiques et scientifiques. Cet accord consacre des années de collaboration avec cette grande université et son département d’archéologie : programmes archéologiques en commun, par exemple les chantiers archéologiques de Kôm Ombo et de Qal‘at Cheikh Hammâm, la  mission épigraphique "Stèles funéraires islamiques", et une coopération très active dans le domaine de la formation. 

في نهاية شهر مايو، وفي إطار المؤتمر الثاني عشر لـ"التحالفات والشراكات" لجامعة عين شمس، وقّع بيير تاليه وأ.د. حسام عويس طنطاوي، عميد كلية الآثار، اتفاقية تعاون بحضور شخصيات دبلوماسية وعلمية. تأصل هذه الاتفاقية لسنوات من التعاون مع هذه الجامعة العريقة وقسم الآثار بها: برامج أثرية مشتركة، مثل موقع قلعة الشيخ همام ومعبد كوم أمبو، والعديد من المشاريع العلمية والتعاون النشط للغاية في مجال التدريب. كما يستضيف المعهد أيضًا العديد من الباحثين المشاركين أو الخبراء العلميين من جامعة عين شمس. تؤكد هذه الاتفاقية وتعزز التعاون القائم بالفعل منذ فترة طويلة مع جامعة عين شمس وترسخ وجود المعهد بشكل أقوى في المشهد الأكاديمي المصري.

L’Ifao sur Instagram

Afin d’améliorer la visibilité de nos activités et atteindre un public plus large, notamment les plus jeunes, l’Ifao est désormais sur Instagram en plus de Youtube, Facebook et X. Y est publié du contenu plus dynamique et attractif : des images esthétiquement captivantes et de courtes vidéos du travail de nos équipes sur le terrain, de la vie de l’Institut, de nos découvertes, et  des objets des collections de l’Ifao. Nouvelles des chantiers et des programmes

Douze missions archéologiques ont été menées au premier semestre : celles du Désert Oriental, de Deir el-Medina, de Dendara Métropole, de la  TT33, des Sanctuaires osiriens de Karnak, du Ouadi Sannour, de Médamoud, de Baouît, du Ouadi el-Jarf, de Philadelphie et de Bouto. Les missions de Coptos, "Dendara épigraphie" et de Taposiris Magna sont reportées au second semestre ; celle de Balat a dû être annulée. Parmi les nombreuses et belles découvertes à retenir, figurent celles faites dans  l’agglomération urbaine de Philadelphie, localisée au nord-est du Fayoum et fouillée depuis 2015. Les travaux réalisés dans la zone nord du site par l’équipe de Ruey-Lin Chang ont permis la découverte d’un complexe religieux occupé de la seconde moitié du IIIe siècle à la fin du Ier siècle avant notre ère. Une chapelle a été identifiée, qui  hébergeait, dans son naos, une table d’offrande portant une inscription grecque dédiée à Artemis. L'équipe a aussi fouillé une niche protégeant la statue d’une déesse assise sur son trône, qui avait été transformée en un dépôt sacré (« favissa »), dont la mise au jour a émerveillé les membres de l'équipe ; en effet, ce dépôt recélait de nombreux objets cultuels et votifs remarquables par leur polychromie.

منذ يناير تم بالفعل تنفيذ اثنتي عشرة بعثة حفائر أثرية من أصل ست عشرة بعثة مخطط لها في النصف الأول من العام: الصحراء الشرقية، ودير المدينة، وحاضرة دندرة، والمقبرة الطيبية رقم ٣٣، والمقاصير الأوزيرية في الكرنك، ووادي سنور، ومدامود، وباويط، ووادي الجرف، وفيلادلفيا، وبوتو. 

وقد تأجلت بعثات قفط ودندرة للنقوش وتاب أوزوريس- ماجنا إلى النصف الثاني من العام؛ وقد تعين إلغاء البعثة إلى بلاط. 

من بين العديد من الاكتشافات الرائعة، تلك التي تمت في مدينة فيلادلفيا اليونانية الرومانية، الواقعة إلى الشمال الشرقي من الفيوم والتي بدأت الحفائر بها منذ عام ٢٠١٥. وقد أدت عمليات الاستكشاف والفحص المبدئي التي أجراها فريق العمل بقيادة روي لين شانج في الجزء الشمالي من الموقع إلى اكتشاف مجمع ديني كان مأهولا بدءًا من النصف الثاني من القرن الثالث قبل الميلاد إلى نهاية القرن الأول قبل الميلاد. يضم قدس أقداس معبد صغير تضم مائدة قرابين تحمل نقشاً يونانياً مكرساً لأرتميس ومشكاة تحمي تمثالاً للإلهة جالسة على عرشها، وقد تحول فيما بعد إلى مستودع مقدس يحتوي على العديد من القطع الخاصة بالطقوس والقرابين متعددة الألوان بشكل لافت.

En février, l'Ifao a célébré l'un de ses membres les plus éminents et les plus actifs : Anita Quiles, qui dirigeait le pôle d'archéométrie depuis mai 2014, a rejoint le Commissariat à l'Energie Atomique (CEA). Un hommage très émouvant lui a été rendu par l'ensemble de l'équipe de l'Ifao, qui l'a remerciée pour son investissement sans faille et d'une rare efficacité, et lui a souhaité la pleine réussite dans ses nouvelles fonctions.

في فبراير، احتفى المعهد  بأحد أبرز أعضائه وأكثرهم نشاطًا: فقد انضمت أنيتا كيليس، التي ترأست قسم الدراسات الأركيومترية منذ مايو ٢٠١٤، إلى اللجنة الفرنسية للطاقة الذرية (CEA). وقد تم تكريمها بإشادة مؤثرة للغاية من قبل فريق المعهد بأكمله، حيث تم توجيه الشكر لها على التزامها الثابت وكفاءتها النادرة، متمنين لها كل التوفيق في منصبها الجديد. 

Une vie scientifique et de diffusion du savoir intense

Du 18 au 22 février, l’Ifao a accueilli l’école d’hiver « Reading and Analysing Ottoman Manuscript Sources », organisée en partenariat avec l’Institut de recherches et d'études sur le monde arabe et musulman (IREMAM), le Centre d'études turques, ottomanes, balkaniques et centrasiatiques (CETOBaC), l’Institut français du Proche-Orient (Ifpo), l’Orient-Institut Beirut, et les universités ASBÜ-Ankara, de Heidelberg, de Halle-Wittenberg et de la Ruhr à Bochum. C'était la cinquième édition de cette action internationale de formation – habituellement organisée en été – après celles qui se sont tenues à Amman, à Beyrouth, à Aix-en-Provence, à Ankara et à Wittenberg-Berlin. Une vingtaine de stagiaires et six instructeurs de diverses nationalités ont animé l'Ifao de leurs réflexions durant ces cinq jours. 

Le  printemps a également été marqué par la tenue de plusieurs rencontres scientifiques au Palais Mounira. Les 21 et 22 avril, en partenariat avec la Faculté d’archéologie de l’Université Ayn Chams [en savoir plus], la 4e "Académie Riwaq" organisée par Ahmad Al-Shoky et Abbès Zouache, a réuni une trentaine de jeunes chercheurs autour du thème des applications de l’intelligence artificielle dans le domaine de l’archéologie islamique.

Le 24 avril, la première journée du colloque international "Les temps du monde : modélisation des âges, chronologies et archéométrie", organisé par Anita Quiles et Chloé Ragazzoli, s'est déroulé en duplex avec l’Ifao [en savoir plus]. Deux communications du colloque ont eu lieu à partir de l’Ifao et une traduction simultanée vers l’arabe a été assurée dans la salle pour toutes les communications de la journée.

Pendant deux jours, les membres du programme NOMADES (Ifao, HISOMA/CNRS, Macquarie University) ont aussi organisé leur premier atelier à l'Ifao au Caire les 23 et 24 avril. Plusieurs intervenants ont été invités afin  de favoriser des échanges entre les différentes disciplines et missions archéologiques au sein du réseau des chercheurs qui travaillent sur les sociétés nomades et sur les formes de nomadismes au Sahara Oriental.

Du 27 au 29 avril, l’Ifao et le PCMA ont organisé conjointement un colloque international intitulé "Place-making in the desertscape : the socialisation of the Egyptian-Sudanese Eastern Desert landscape in the long durée (4th millennium BCE- 4th century CE)". Le colloque a été organisé par  la lauréate de la bourse post-doctorale Ifao-PCMA, Cristina Alu, et a rassemblé 31 chercheurs. Les participants  ont également eu l'occasion de visiter la Société géographique d'Égypte et son musée ethnographique.

نشاط علمي مكثف لنشر المعرفة 

في الفترة من ١٨ إلى ٢٢ فبراير، استضاف المعهد المدرسة الشتوية "قراءة وتحليل مصادر المخطوطات العثمانية"، التي نُظِّمت بالشراكة مع معهد بحوث ودراسات العالم العربي والإسلامي (IREMAM), مركز الدراسات التركية والعثمانية والبلقانية والمركزية (CETOBaC)، والمعهد الفرنسي للشرق الأوسط (Ifpo)، ومعهد الشرق في بيروت، وجامعات: ASBÜ-أنقرة، وهايدلبرغ، وهاله-فيتنبرغ، والرور في بوخوم. كانت هذه هي النسخة الخامسة من هذا الحدث التدريبي الدولي - الذي يُنظم عادةً في الصيف - بعد تلك التي عقدت في عمّان وبيروت وإكس أون بروفانس وأنقرة وفيتنبرغ-برلين. وقد شارك نحو عشرين متدربًا وستة محاضرين من جنسيات مختلفة في الفترة ما بين ١٨ و٢٢ فبراير. 

شهد فصل الربيع أيضًا عقد عدد من اللقاءات العلمية في قصر المنيرة. في يومي ٢١ و٢٢ أبريل ٢٠٢٤، وبالشراكة مع كلية الآثار بجامعة عين شمس [المزيد]، جمعت "أكاديمية رواق" الرابعة، التي نظمها أحمد الشوكي وعباس زواش، حوالي ثلاثين باحثًا شابًا لمناقشة تطبيقات الذكاء الاصطناعي في مجال الآثار الإسلامية.

في ٢٤ أبريل ٢٠٢٤، عُقد اليوم الأول من المؤتمر الدولي "أزمنة العالم: نمذجة العصور والتسلسل الزمني والأركيوميتري"، الذي نظمته أنيتا كيليس وكلويه راجازولي بالاشتراك مع المعهد [المزيد]. قُدِّمت ورقتان من أوراق المؤتمر من المعهد، وتم توفير ترجمة فورية إلى اللغة العربية في القاعة لجميع أبحاث اليوم.

كما نظّم أعضاء برنامج NOMADES (المعهد الفرنسي للآثار الشرقية، HISOMA/CNRS، وجامعة ماكواري) ورشة العمل الأولى بالقاهرة يومي ٢٣ و٢٤ أبريل. وقد تمت دعوة عدد من الباحثين من أجل تشجيع التبادل بين مختلف التخصصات والبعثات الآثارية ضمن شبكة الباحثين المهتمين بالمجتمعات البدوية وأشكال الترحال في الصحراء الشرقية.

في الفترة من ٢٧ إلى ٢٩ أبريل، نظّم المعهد بالاشتراك مع المركز البولندي لأثار البحر المتوسط مؤتمرًا دوليًا بعنوان: Place-making in the desertscape: the socialisation of the Egyptian-Sudanese Eastern Desert landscape in the longue durée (4th millennium BCE- 4th century CE). نظّمت المؤتمر كريستينا ألو، الحاصلة على زمالة ما بعد الدكتوراه من Ifao - PCMA، وضم ٣١ باحثًا. كما أتيحت الفرصة للمشاركين لزيارة الجمعية الجغرافية المصرية والمتحف الإثنوغرافي.

Esna et son patrimoine

Le 12 mai, l’Ifao a organisé un événement exceptionnel consacré à la ville d’Esna et son patrimoine, dans le but de mettre en valeur les travaux de restauration et d'aménagement urbain entrepris récemment par le ministère du Tourisme et des Antiquités, l'université de Tübingen et le projet VISIT-Esna, ainsi que le travail pionnier de documentation, d'études et de publications entamé précédemment par l'Ifao.

L'événement a commencé par une demi-journée de conférences et de présentations, suivie de l'ouverture d'une exposition sur le patrimoine d'Esna : photos, vêtements d'époque et recettes locales dans le hall principal, puis d'une dégustation des spécialités culinaires d'Esna dans les jardins de l'Ifao, accompagnée d'un spectacle de tahtib.

في ١٢ مايو، نظّم المعهد حدثًا استثنائيًا مخصصًا لمدينة إسنا وتراثها، بهدف تسليط الضوء على أعمال الترميم والتطوير العمراني التي قامت بها مؤخرًا وزارة السياحة والآثار وجامعة توبنجن ومشروع "زوروا إسنا"، بالإضافة إلى الأعمال الرائدة في التوثيق والدراسات والمنشورات التي قام بها المعهد سابقًا.

بدأت الفاعلية بنصف يوم من المحاضرات والعروض التقديمية، تلاها افتتاح معرض عن تراث إسنا: صور وملابس من العصر القديم ووصفات محلية في القاعة الرئيسية، ثم تذوق أطباق إسنا المميزة في حديقة المعهد مصحوبة بعرض للتحطيب.

Les conférences de la SFDAS à l’Ifao

Un nouveau cycle de conférences en mode hybride, proposé par la Section Française de la Direction des Antiquités du Soudan, enrichit la programmation scientifique au Palais Mounira. Pour l'heure, deux conférences ont été organisées. La première a été donnée par une conférence d'Elsa Yvanez en mars, la deuxième par Rennan Lemos & Ekhlas Abdel Latif, en juin.

سلسلة جديدة من المحاضرات بطريقة هجينة طرحها القسم الفرنسي لدراسة الآثار السودانية لإثراء البرنامج العلمي في قصر المنيرة. وقد تم حتى الآن تنظيم محاضرتين. الأولى ألقتها إلسا إيفانيز في شهر مارس، والثانية ألقاها رينان ليموس وإخلاص عبد اللطيف في شهر يونيو.

Enseignements et formations

En sus des traditionnels "Cours de l’Ifao", qui est un cycle de cours accessibles à tous consacré à l’histoire de l’Égypte et assurés par les chercheurs de l’Ifao, cette année, l’Ifao a offert à la communauté des français du Caire, un cycle d’une dizaine de cours d’Initiation à l’écriture hiéroglyphique. Ces cours ont été assurés par Pierre Tallet, Marion Claude et Mathilde Prévost.

Les séminaires annuels Akhet et Peret, ouverts en priorité aux agents du Ministère du Tourisme et des Antiquités, ont poursuivi respectivement leur deuxième et première années. A titre de rappel, Akhet consiste en un tour d’horizon sur la recherche en égyptologie, tandis que Peret propose à celles et ceux ayant suivi le premier séminaire de s’entraîner à la présentation de travaux scientifiques.

Le Diplôme Universitaire en Archéologie et Patrimoine, créé en partenariat avec l’Université Senghor (Alexandrie), a également poursuivi sa première année.

Des formations ponctuelles ont également eu lieu : parmi elles, l'école d’hiver sur les sources manuscrites ottomanes  déjà évoquée, ainsi qu'une formation de trois jours sur l’archéologie médiévale, qui a réuni une douzaine d’inspecteurs du 14 au 16 mai. L’Ifao a aussi participé à un workshop sur la rédaction scientifique et la publication internationale organisé à l’université MUST le 9 mars. 

بالإضافة إلى دورات المعهد التقليدية، وهي سلسلة من الدورات التدريبية المفتوحة للجميع حول تاريخ مصر، والتي يقدمها باحثو المعهد، قدمنا هذا العام للجالية الفرنسية في القاهرة سلسلة من عشر محاضرات تمهيدية حول الكتابة الهيروغليفية. قدم هذه المحاضرات بيير تاليه وماريون كلود وماتيلد بريفوست.

استمرت دورات "أخت" و"بيريت” التدريبية السنوية، المفتوحة في المقام الأول لموظفي وزارة السياحة والآثار، في عامها الثاني والأول على التوالي. تقدم "أخت" نظرة عامة على البحوث في علم المصريات، بينما تتيح ندوة "بيريت" الفرصة للذين شاركوا في الندوة الأولى للتدرب على عرض أعمالهم العلمية.

واصل الدبلوم الجامعي في علم الآثار والتراث، الذي تم إنشاؤه بالشراكة مع جامعة سنجور (الإسكندرية)، عامه الأول.

كما عُقدت دورات تدريبية خاصة، بما في ذلك المدرسة الشتوية حول مصادر المخطوطات العثمانية التي سبق ذكرها، بالإضافة إلى دورة تدريبية لمدة ثلاثة أيام حول علم الآثار في العصور الوسطى، والتي جمعت عشرات المفتشين في الفترة من ١٤ إلى ١٦ مايو. كما شارك المعهد أيضًا في ورشة عمل حول الكتابة العلمية والنشر الدولي نُظِّمت في جامعة مصر الدولية للعلوم والتكنولوجيا في ٩ مارس.

Travaux

Soucieux de préserver son patrimoine bâti et d'adapter celui-ci aux nouvelles exigences tant techniques que de travail, l'Ifao a engagé plusieurs opérations de travaux dans le cadre de ce premier semestre 2024. Le premier étage de l'aile est, où sont accueillis les chercheurs, a été rafraîchi en totalité et doté de nouveaux équipements de travail (mobilier et équipement informatique). En parallèle, une mise aux normes électriques a été engagée dans les bâtiments occupés par le pôle éditorial à partir du mois de mai. La fin des travaux est prévue dans le courant du mois d'août 2024.
Enfin, un projet visant à relocaliser la cuisine à l'extérieur du Palais Mounira a été mis en oeuvre afin de doter l'Ifao d'une cuisine professionnelle, en conformité avec les exigences en matière d'hygiène et de sécurité. La nouvelle cuisine sera opérationnelle à la rentrée de septembre 2024.

قام المعهد بالعديد من الأعمال في النصف الأول من عام ٢٠٢٤ بهدف الحفاظ على مباني المعهد وتكييفها مع المتطلبات التقنية ومتطلبات العمل الجديدة. فقد تم تجديد الطابق الأول من الجناح الشرقي، حيث يوجد مقر الباحثين، بالكامل وتزويده بمعدات عمل جديدة (أثاث ومعدات تكنولوجيا المعلومات). وفي الوقت نفسه، بدأ العمل في مايو على رفع مستوى المعايير الكهربائية بالمباني التي يشغلها قسم النشر. ومن المقرر الانتهاء من العمل في أغسطس ٢٠٢٤.

Ecoresponsabilité

L'Ifao s'est engagé dans une démarche éco-responsable depuis 2022 afin de répondre aux enjeux climatiques et aux exigences ministérielles. De nombreuses actions ont vu le jour et portent leurs fruits comme l'illustre la diminution de 5% des consommation électrique sur l'année 2023. Afin de poursuivre cette démarche, l'Ifao s'est engagé dans un processus visant à définir l'impact carbone de ses activités afin d'orienter sa stratégie et de définir les actions les plus pertinentes sur la base de ce diagnostic.
La définition de ce bilan carbone sera réalisé pendant le second semestre 2024 et orientera donc la stratégie 2025 dans l'objectif de répondre aux exigences européennes, à savoir "réduire d'au moins 55% les émissions d'ici 2030".

يلتزم المعهد بنهج المسؤولية البيئية منذ عام ٢٠٢٢ من أجل مواجهة تحديات تغير المناخ والامتثال للمتطلبات الوزارية. وقد اتُّخذت العديد من الإجراءات التي بدأت تؤتي ثمارها، كما يتضح من خفض استهلاك الكهرباء بنسبة ٥% في عام ٢٠٢٣. من أجل متابعة هذا النهج، شرع المعهد في عملية تهدف إلى تحديد الأثر الكربوني لأنشطته من أجل توجيه استراتيجيته وتحديد الإجراءات الأكثر ملائمة على أساس التشخيص.
سيُجرى تقييم الكربون في النصف الثاني من عام ٢٠٢٤ وسيوجه استراتيجية ٢٠٢٥، بهدف تلبية المتطلبات الأوروبية "لخفض الانبعاثات بنسبة ٥٥% على الأقل بحلول عام ٢٠٣٠".

Photographe de l’Ifao depuis deux décennies, Ihab Ibrahim est l'un des spécialistes qui connaît le mieux ses missions archéologiques. Il nous a fait le plaisir de nous répondre à ces quelques questions...

Pouvez-vous nous dire dans quel contexte vous avez commencé à travailler à l'Ifao ?

Ma passion pour la photographie a commencé dès mon plus jeune âge, car les murs de notre maison étaient couverts de photos en noir et blanc des statues et des temples de l'Égypte ancienne. Ma relation avec l'Institut a commencé au milieu des années 1990. Mon père, connu sous le nom de "Mimi", était alors photographe à l'Institut. Je l'accompagnais, pendant l'été, et il m'enseignait alors la photographie, le développement et le tirage de pellicule argentique. Mon père, avec les encouragements des directeurs du service de photographie de l’époque, Alain Leclair et Jean-François Goût, m'a tout appris sur la photographie.

J'ai rejoint l'Institut officiellement en 2004. J'étais déjà un visage familier pour la plupart des gens qui y travaillaient. Ils m'y avaient vu déambuler dès mon plus jeune âge... J'ai commencé à travailler comme photographe stagiaire pendant un an. À ce moment, le service des archives venait de lancer un projet ambitieux avec d'autres services, en particulier le service informatique dirigé par Christian Gaubert. Ce projet consistait en la numérisation et la conservation des anciens supports de photographies, négatifs et plaques de verres. Quelques 200 milles pièces dont des très rares couvrant plus d’un siècle de travail de l'Institut en Égypte. Je me suis attelé à ce projet...

Au cours de votre carrière de photographe, vous avez assisté à une révolution technologique majeure qui a bouleversé les pratiques, les outils et les équipements du photographe : le passage de l'argentique au numérique. Comment l'avez-vous vécu ?

Au début du millénaire, l'avènement de la photographie numérique et l'utilisation des ordinateurs ont commencé. J'ai eu la chance de bien vivre le changement qui se produisait dans le domaine de la photographie. Le passage au numérique était inévitable : il offre de très nombreux avantages pour faciliter le processus de photographie et aider tous ceux qui ont une passion pour la photographie. L'avantage le plus important du numérique sur le terrain est qu’il donne au photographe un aperçu immédiat de son travail, ce qui n’est pas possible avec l’argentique sauf après le développement de la pellicule. J'estime que j'ai eu de la chance d'avoir été le témoin de cette transition et d'avoir pratiqué ces deux techniques, et je remercie les photographes de l'Institut auprès desquels j'ai travaillé, ainsi que mon père, qui a joué un rôle essentiel dans ma formation, de m'avoir transmis leur savoir avec générosité et bienveillance.

Je garde de nombreux bons souvenirs de mes relations avec les chefs des missions archéologiques et les chercheurs, qui tous m'ont encouragé à poursuivre ma passion.

Vous passez la majeure partie de l'année en déplacement, de chantiers en chantiers... Parlez-nous des débuts de cette aventure et des défis que vous devez relever.

En 2006, Jean-François Goût a quitté l’Ifao pour rejoindre le Centre Franco-Égyptien d'Étude des Temples de Karnak (CFEETK) à Louxor. Alain Leclair, directeur du service, m'a confié pour la première fois la responsabilité de la photographie pour certaines des missions de fouilles de l'Institut. J'ai commencé alors mon parcours de photographe en voyageant entre les différentes missions et sites. J’ai également beaucoup travaillé dans les musées dans le cadre de projets de recherche ou de publication de l’Institut.

La photographie archéologique sur site est intrinsèquement ardue et comporte de multiples risques : l'exposition à une chaleur extrême, le fait de dormir et de travailler sous des tentes dans des conditions parfois difficiles, ainsi que d'autres risques tels que les scorpions et les serpents, le travail à l'intérieur de tombes étroites et mal ventilées et l'escalade d'échafaudages et d'échelles de grande hauteur. Peu à peu, ces conditions sont devenues mon mode de vie et j'ai commencé à organiser mon temps en fonction des dates annuelles des missions archéologiques. J'ai pris l'habitude d'être en déplacement au moins une ou deux fois par mois.

Pour certaines missions archéologiques, je dois me rendre sur le terrain chaque année afin de continuer des projets documentation et de restauration de longue durée. Parfois, ces projets s'étalent sur une décennie ou plus ! C'est le cas, par exemple, des travaux que je réalise dans le cadre de la mission de Tebtynis. D’autres projets peuvent aussi s’étaler sur plusieurs saisons de fouilles, comme celui de la cachette de Karnak, qui a duré trois ans au sein du Musée égyptien.

Certaines missions demandent une intervention spéciale, comme l'utilisation de l'imagerie infrarouge, la documentation de textes des colonnes circulaires des temples, une modélisation 3D d’une tombe ou d’un édifice, etc. Je crois qu’au cours de ma carrière à l’Ifao, il n'y a pas une mission de l’Ifao où je ne suis pas intervenu au moins une fois.

Enfin, est-ce que vous pouvez nous citer un ou plusieurs moments marquants de votre carrière à l'Ifao ?

Les moments de grandes découvertes sont des souvenirs inoubliables : le papyrus de Ouadi Jarf, le trésor de Douch, le fait de toucher et de photographier un objet rare dès qu'il est découvert provoque des sensations palpitantes et réjouissantes...

Outre le travail des missions et l’imagerie scientifique, j'apporte un soutien technique aux différents services de l'Institut. Dans ce cadre j’ai accompagné Amr Bahgat et le service de communication dans le lancement de la chaîne YouTube de l’Ifao et la mise en place d'une salle dédiée à la diffusion en direct pendant la pandémie. J'ai aussi contribué à la confection et au montage des vidéos de présentation des missions archéologiques, de programmes de recherche ou des différents services de l'Institut.

Un long parcours de plus de 20 ans au sein de l’Ifao dont je suis fier. Je sens une appartenance à cette grande maison qui a formé en quelque sorte ma vie et qui continue à le faire. Je suis reconnaissant envers tous mes collègues de l'Institut avec lesquels j'ai travaillé au long de cette période pour leur soutien.

يعمل إيهاب إبراهيم مصورًا فوتوغرافيًا في المعهد الفرنسي للآثار الشرقية منذ عقدين من الزمن، وربما يكون هو أكثر أعضاء المعهد مساهمة في أكبر عدد من البعثات الأثرية. وقد تفضل بالإجابة على بعض الأسئلة...

١.  هل يمكنك تقديم نفسك و إخبارنا في أي سياق بدأت العمل في المعهد ؟

بدأ شغفي بالتصوير الفوتوغرافي منذ صغري، حيث كانت جدران منزلنا مغطاة بصور فوتوغرافية بالأبيض والأسود للتماثيل والمعابد المصرية القديمة. بدأت علاقتي بالمعهد في منتصف التسعينيات، عندما كان والدي المعروف باسم "ميمي" مصورًا فوتوغرافيًا في المعهد، وكان يرافقني خلال فصل الصيف لتعليمي التصوير الفوتوجرافي وتحميض وطباعة الأفلام التقليدية. علّمني والدي، بتشجيع من مديري القسم في ذلك الوقت آلان لوكلير وجان فرانسوا جو، كل ما يمكن معرفته عن التصوير الفوتوغرافي.

انضممتُ رسمياً إلى المعهد في عام ٢٠٠٤، حيث كنتُ بالفعل وجهاً مألوفاً لمعظم العاملين بسبب مشاركتي السابقة في قسم التصوير الفوتوغرافي منذ سن مبكرة. بدأتُ العمل كمصور متدرب لمدة عام، وفي الوقت نفسه قمت بتدريب زملاء آخرين على المعالجة الرقمية للصور الفوتوغرافية والنيجاتيف وكذلك على تحميض الصور الفوتوغرافية وطباعتها. في ذلك الوقت، كان قسم الأرشيف والمجموعات الخاصة تحت قيادة نادين شيربيون، بالتعاون مع قسم التصوير الفوتوغرافي وقسم نظم المعلومات، (وحدة العلوم الإنسانية الرقمية وتكنولوجيا المعلومات الحالية)، برئاسة كريستيان جوبير، قد أطلق للتو مشروعًا كبيرًا لحفظ وسائط التصوير الفوتوغرافي القديمة والنيجاتيف والألواح الزجاجية رقميًا. حوالي ٢٠٠٠٠٠ صورة فوتوغرافية، بما في ذلك بعض الصور النادرة جدًا، والتي تغطي أكثر من قرن من عمل المعهد في مصر ثم شرعتُ في هذا المشروع...

٢. شهدت فترة احترافك مهنة التصوير الفوتوغرافي ثورة تقنية هامة قلبت رأسًا على عقب الممارسات والأدوات والمعدات المستخدمة: التحول من التصوير الضوئي للرقمي: كيف عشت هذا التحول؟

مع بداية الألفية الجديدة بدأ ظهور التصوير الرقمي واستخدام أجهزة الكمبيوتر، وكنت محظوظاً بما فيه الكفاية لأعايش التغيير الذي حدث في مجال التصوير وحتمية التحول إلى الرقمنة لما تقدمه من مزايا عديدة لتسهيل عملية التصوير ومساعدة المصورين الهواة أيضاً. أهم ميزة للرقمية في هذا المجال هي أنها تمنح المصور الفوتوغرافي نظرة عامة فورية على عمله، وهو ما لا يتوفر مع الأفلام إلا بعد تحميض الفيلم. أعتبر نفسي محظوظاً لأنني شهدت هذا الانتقال ومارست هاتين التقنيتين، وأود أن أشكر المصورين في المعهد، وكذلك والدي الذي لعب دوراً أساسياً في تدريبي ونقلوا لي معرفتهم بكرم وود.

لدي العديد من الذكريات العزيزة مع مديري البعثات الأثرية والباحثين الذين شجعوني على ممارسة شغفي.

٣. تقضي معظم العام متنقلًا بين بعثات حفائر المعهد المختلفة. حدثنا عن تجربتك والتحديات التي تواجهها؟

في عام ٢٠٠٦، ترك جان فرانسوا جو المعهد لينضم إلى المركز الفرنسي المصري لدراسة معابد الكرنك في الأقصر. وقد عهد إليّ آلان لوكلير، مدير القسم، لأول مرة بمسؤولية التصوير الفوتوغرافي لبعض مواقع الحفائر الأثرية التابعة للمعهد. وسرعان ما بدأت مسيرتي المهنية كمصور فوتوغرافي متنقلاً بين مختلف البعثات والمواقع. كما عملت أيضاً على نطاق واسع في المتاحف كجزء من مشاريع المعهد في مجال البحث والنشر.

إن التصوير الأثري في الموقع شاق بطبيعته وينطوي على العديد من المخاطر: التعرض للحرارة الشديدة، والنوم والعمل في الخيام في بعض الظروف الصعبة للغاية، بالإضافة إلى مخاطر أخرى مثل العقارب والثعابين، والعمل داخل مقابر ضيقة سيئة التهوية وصعود السقالات والسلالم ذات الارتفاعات العالية. وشيئًا فشيئًا، أصبحت هذه الظروف أسلوب حياتي وبدأت بتنظيم وقتي حول المواعيد السنوية للبعثات الأثرية واعتدت على الغياب مرة أو مرتين على الأقل في الشهر.

بالنسبة لبعض البعثات الأثرية، يجب أن أزورها كل عام من أجل مواصلة مشاريع التوثيق والترميم طويلة الأمد التي تمتد أحياناً لعقد من الزمن، كما في حالة تبتينيس. كما يمكن أن تمتد مشاريع قواعد البيانات الأخرى إلى عدة مواسم حفائر، مثل خبيئة الكرنك التي استغرق اكتمالها ثلاث سنوات في المتحف المصري.

تتطلب بعض المهمات تدخلاً خاصاً، مثل استخدام صور الأشعة تحت الحمراء، وتوثيق النصوص على الأعمدة الدائرية في المعابد، والنمذجة ثلاثية الأبعاد لمقبرة أو مبنى، وما إلى ذلك. لا أعتقد أن هناك بعثة حفائر خاصة بالمعهد لم أشارك فيها مرة واحدة على الأقل خلال عملي.

٣. في النهاية، هل تود ذكر لحظات هامة في مسيرتك العملية ؟

إن لحظات الاكتشافات العظيمة هي ذكريات لا تُنسى: بردية وادي الجرف، وكنز دوش، والإثارة التي ترافق لمس وتصوير قطعة نادرة بمجرد اكتشافها.

بالإضافة إلى العمل الميداني والتصوير العلمي، أقدم الدعم الفني لأقسام المعهد المختلفة وأساهم في تطويرها. على سبيل المثال، ساعدت عمرو بهجت وقسم التواصل والدعم في إطلاق قناة خاصة بالمعهد على يوتيوب وإنشاء غرفة مخصصة للبث المباشر أثناء جائحة كورونا. كما ساهمت في إنتاج مقاطع فيديو تقدم البعثات الأثرية وأقسام المعهد المختلفة.

أنا فخور بمسيرتي المهنية التي امتدت ٢٠ عامًا في المعهد. أشعر بالانتماء إلى هذه المؤسسة العظيمة، التي ساهمت بشكل كبير في تشكيل حياتي ولا تزال تفعل ذلك. وأنا ممتن لجميع زملائي في المعهد الذين عملت معهم خلال هذه الفترة على دعمهم لي.

A semester full of scientific exchanges

The first half of 2024 was rich in scientific interactions and works. Archaeological activity was particularly intense, despite delays in authorization for four missions. All in all, twelve missions were able to carry out their work.

The semester was culminated by the 8th France-Egypt Archaeology Day, held on Tuesday June 11th in the auditorium of the Institut Français d'Egypte (IFE). The directors of the French research centers based in Egypt, Pierre Tallet (Ifao), Luc Gabolde and Ahmed al-Tahar (CFEETK) and Thomas Faucher (CEAlex) gave an overview of their centers' activities. In addition, Aurore Ciavatti was invited to give a presentation on her work regarding the royal workmen's marks from the 4th Dynasty. The day ended with a screening of the documentary "The world of Khufu: experimental archaeology for a better understanding of history".

Associated in recent years with the France-Egypt Archaeology Day, this year's annual Garden-Party was held at the end of the same week, on Thursday June 13th. The event, attended by French Ambassador Eric Chevallier, brought together around three hundred guests, including the new Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, Dr Mohamed Ismaïl, who inaugurated the evening with a cordial greeting.

A new collaboration agreement with Ain Shams University

During the first half of the year, the Ifao also strengthened its ties with Egyptian universities. On May 30th, on the occasion of Ain Shams University's 12th "Alliances and Partnerships" symposium, Pierre Tallet and Hossam Owais Tantawi, Dean of the Faculty of Archaeology, signed a collaboration agreement in the presence of diplomatic and scientific personalities. The agreement marks years of collaboration with this major university and its Department of Archaeology: joint archaeological programs, such as the Kôm Ombo and Qal'at Sheikh Hammâm archaeological sites, the "Islamic Funerary Steles" epigraphic mission, and very active cooperation in the field of training. 

The Ifao in now on Instagram

To improve the visibility of our activities and reach a wider audience, especially younger ones, the Ifao is now on Instagram in addition to Youtube, Facebook and X. More dynamic and attractive content is published there: aesthetically captivating images and short videos of our teams' work on the field, the life of the Institute, our discoveries, and objects from the Ifao's collections. News about the Archaeological Sites and Programs

Twelve archaeological missions were carried out in the first half of the year: those of the Eastern Desert, Deir el-Medina, Dendara Metropolis, TT33, Karnak Osirian Sanctuaries, Wadi Sannour, Medamoud, Baouit, Wadi el-Jarf, Philadelphia and Bouto. The Coptos, "Dendara epigraphy" and Taposiris Magna missions have been postponed to the second half of the year; the Balat mission had to be cancelled. Among the many fine discoveries to be noted are those made in the Graeco-Roman urban agglomeration of Philadelphia, located on the north-east side of Fayoum and excavated since 2015. Work carried out in the northern zone of the site by Ruey-Lin Chang's team led to the discovery of a religious complex occupied from the second half of the 3rd century to the end of the 1st century BC. A shrine was identified, with an offering table bearing a Greek inscription dedicated to Artemis in its naos. The team also excavated a niche housing a statue of a goddess seated on her throne, which had been transformed into a sacred deposit. In fact, this deposit contained numerous cult and votive objects of remarkable polychromy.

Departure of Anita Quiles, Head of Ifao's Archaeometry Department

In February, Ifao celebrated one of its most prominent and active members: Anita Quiles, who had been in charge of the archaeometry department since May 2014. Anita Quiles joined the French Atomic Energy Commission (CEA). A moving tribute was paid to her by the entire Ifao team, who thanked her for her unwavering commitment and exceptional efficiency, and wished her success in her new role. 

An intense scientific activity for dissemination of knowledge

From February 18th to 22th, the Ifao hosted the "Reading and Analysing Ottoman Manuscript Sources" winter school, organized in partnership with the Institut de recherches et d'études sur le monde arabe et musulman (IREMAM), the Centre d'études turques, ottomanes, balkaniques et centrasiatiques (CETOBaC), the Institut français du Proche-Orient (Ifpo), the Orient-Institut Beirut, and the Universities of ASBÜ-Ankara, Heidelberg, Halle-Wittenberg and Ruhr Bochum. This was the fifth edition of this international training event - usually organized in summer - following those held in Amman, Beirut, Aix-en-Provence, Ankara and Wittenberg-Berlin. Around twenty trainees and six instructors of various nationalities shared their reflections during those five days. 

Spring also featured a number of scientific meetings at the Mounira Palace. On April 21st and 22nd, in partnership with the Faculty of Archaeology at Ain Shams University, the 4th "Riwaq Academy" [more] organized by Ahmad Al-Shoky and Abbès Zouache, brought together around thirty young researchers to discuss the applications of artificial intelligence in the field of Islamic archaeology.

On April 24th, the first day of the International Conference "Les temps du monde : modélisation des âges, chronologies et archéométrie", organized by Anita Quiles and Chloé Ragazzoli, took place in collaboration with the Ifao [more]. Two conference papers were presented from the Ifao, and simultaneous translation into Arabic was provided in the hall for all the papers presented over the course of the conference.

For two days, members of the NOMADES program (Ifao, HISOMA/CNRS, Macquarie University) also organized their first workshop at Ifao in Cairo on April 23th and 24th. A number of guest speakers were invited to participate in order to encourage exchanges between the different disciplines and archaeological missions within the network of researchers working on nomadic societies and forms of nomadism in the Eastern Desert.

From April 27th to 29th, Ifao and PCMA jointly organized an international conference titled "Place-making in the desertscape: the socialisation of the Egyptian-Sudanese Eastern Desert landscape in the long durée (4th millennium BCE- 4th century CE)". The conference was organized by Cristina Alu, recipient of the Ifao-PCMA post-doctoral fellowship, and brought together 31 researchers. Participants also had the opportunity to visit the Geographical Society of Egypt and its ethnographic museum.

Esna and its heritage

On May 12th, the Ifao organized an exceptional event dedicated to the city of Esna and its heritage, with the aim of highlighting the restoration and urban development work recently undertaken by the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, the University of Tübingen and the VISIT-Esna project, as well as the pioneering work of documentation, studies and publications previously undertaken by the Ifao.

The event started with a half-day of lectures and presentations, followed by the opening of an exhibition on Esna's heritage: photos, historical clothing and local recipes in the main hall, then a tasting of Esna's culinary specialties in the Ifao gardens, accompanied by a tahtib show.

The SFDAS conferences at the Ifao

A new hybrid lecture series organized by the French Section of the Sudan Department of Antiquities is enriching the scientific program at the Mounira Palace. To date, two lectures have been organized. The first was given by Elsa Yvanez in March, the second by Rennan Lemos & Ekhlas Abdel Latif, in June. 

Training and education

In addition to the regular "Cours de l'Ifao", a series of courses on Egyptian history given by Ifao researchers and open to all, this year the Ifao offered the French community in Cairo a series of introductory classes on hieroglyphic writing. The classes were given by Pierre Tallet, Marion Claude and Mathilde Prévost.

The annual Akhet and Peret seminars, open primarily to staff from the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, continued their second and first years respectively. As a reminder, Akhet provides an overview of research in Egyptology, while Peret offers those who attended the first seminar the opportunity to practise presenting scientific work.

The University Diploma in Archaeology and Heritage, created in collaboration with Senghor University (Alexandria), also continued its first year.

A number of one-off training courses also took place, including the aforementioned winter school on Ottoman manuscript sources, as well as a three-day training course on medieval archaeology, which brought together a dozen inspectors from May 14th to 16th. The Ifao also took part in a workshop on scientific writing and international publication organized at MUST University on March 9th.

Construction Work

With a desire to preserve its buildings and adapt them to new technical and working requirements, the Ifao has undertaken a number of works in the first half of 2024. The second floor of the east wing, where researchers are based, has been completely refurbished and fitted with new work equipment (furniture and IT equipment). At the same time, work began in May on bringing the buildings occupied by the editorial department up to electrical standards. Completion is scheduled for August 2024.
Finally, a project to relocate the kitchen outside the Mounira Palace has been launched, in order to provide the Ifao with a professional kitchen that complies with health and safety requirements. The new kitchen will be operational in September 2024.

Eco-responsability

The Ifao has been committed to an eco-responsible approach since 2022, in response to climate change and to meet ministerial requirements. Numerous actions have been taken and are already paying off, as illustrated by the 5% reduction in electricity consumption in 2023. To pursue this approach, the Ifao has embarked on a process aimed at defining the carbon impact of its activities in order to guide its strategy and define the most relevant actions on the basis of this diagnosis.
The definition of this carbon footprint will be carried out during the second half of 2024 and will therefore guide the 2025 strategy with the aim of meeting European requirements, i.e. "to reduce emissions by at least 55% by 2030".

An Ifao photographer for the past two decades, Ihab Ibrahim is one of the specialists who knows the most about archaeological missions. He was kind enough to answer a few questions...

1. Can you tell us how you started working for the Ifao?

My passion for photography began when I was very young, as the walls of our house were covered with black and white photos of ancient Egyptian statues and temples. My relationship with the Institute began in the mid-1990s. My father, known as 'Mimi', was a photographer at the Institute at the time. I used to accompany him during the summer and he taught me photography, developing and printing traditional film. My father, with the encouragement of the directors of the photography department at the time, Alain Leclair and Jean-François Goût, taught me everything about photography.

I officially joined the Institut in 2004. I was already a familiar face to most of the people who worked there. They'd seen me walking around from an early age... I started work as a trainee photographer for a year. At that time, the archives department had just launched an ambitious project with other departments, in particular the IT department headed by Christian Gaubert. The project involved digitising and preserving old photographic media, negatives and glass plates. Around 200,000 items, including some very rare ones, covering more than a century of the Institute's work in Egypt. I got down to work on this project...

2. Over the course of your career as a professional photographer, you have witnessed a major technological revolution that has upturned photographic practices, tools and equipment: the transition from film to digital: how did you experience it?

At the turn of the millennium, the rise of digital photography and the use of computers began. I was lucky enough to experience the change that was taking place in photography. The move to digital was inevitable: it offers a large number of advantages to facilitate the photography process and help all those who have a passion for photography. The most important advantage of digital in the field is that it gives the photographer an immediate overview of his or her work, which is not possible with film except after the film has been developed. I consider myself lucky to have witnessed this transition and to have practised these two techniques, and I would like to thank the photographers at the Institute with whom I worked, as well as my father, who played an essential role in my training, for having passed on their knowledge to me with generosity and kindness.
I have many fond memories of my relationships with the heads of the archaeological missions and the researchers, all of whom encouraged me to pursue my passion.

3. You spend most of the year on the move between the Institute's various archaeological missions. Tell us about the starting point of this adventure and the challenges you face.

In 2006, Jean-François Goût left the Ifao to join the Centre Franco-Égyptien d'Étude des Temples de Karnak (CFEETK) in Luxor. Alain Leclair, director of the department, entrusted me for the first time with responsibility for photographing some of the Institute's excavations. I then began my career as a photographer, travelling between the different missions and sites. I also worked a lot in museums as part of the Institute's research and publication projects.
Archaeological photography on site is intrinsically arduous and involves many risks: exposure to extreme heat, sleeping and working in tents in sometimes difficult conditions, as well as other risks such as scorpions and snakes, working inside narrow, poorly ventilated tombs and climbing high scaffolding and ladders. Little by little, these conditions became my way of life and I began to organise my time around the annual dates of the archaeological missions. I got into the habit of travelling at least once or twice a month.

For some archaeological missions, I have to visit the site every year to continue long-term documentation and restoration projects. Sometimes these projects span a decade or more! This is the case, for example, for the work I'm carrying out as part of the Tebtynis mission. Other projects can span several excavation seasons, such as the Karnak cache, which took three years to complete at the Egyptian Museum.
Some missions require special intervention, such as the use of infrared imaging, the documentation of texts on the circular columns of temples, 3D modelling of a tomb or building, and so on. I don't think there's an Ifao mission in my career that I haven't been involved in at least once.

3. Finally, do you recall any significant moments in your career ?

The moments of great discoveries are unforgettable memories: the Wadi Jarf papyrus, the Douch treasure, the thrill of touching and photographing a rare object as soon as it is discovered...
As well as mission work and scientific imaging, I provide technical support to the Institute's various departments. I helped Amr Bahgat and the communication department launch the Ifao's YouTube channel and set up a room dedicated to live broadcasts during the pandemic. I also contributed to the production and editing of videos presenting archaeological missions, research programmes and the Institute's various departments.
It's a long career spanning more than 20 years at Ifao, and I'm proud of it. I feel a sense of belonging to this great institution that has shaped my life to some extent and continues to do so. I am grateful to all my colleagues at the Institute with whom I have worked over this period for their support.
