HADAD, Shulamit
Incised Glass Vessels from the Umayyad and Abbasid-Fatimid Periods at Bet Shean, Israel
BASOR 317
The American Schools of Oriental Research, Boston, 2000, p. 63-73

[750, 1100]
• Remarks on incised glass vessels from Bet Sheʾan:
– incised glass are widespread in the Abbasid-Fatimid periods,
– most of the vessels are decorated with geometric designs.

• Examples of incised glass vessels from Bet Sheʾan:
– late Umayyad Period:
- two fragments of bowls or beakers: dark blue and olive glass, decorated with lozenges and triangles (fig. 1: 1-2).

– Abbasid-Fatimid Periods:
- twenty vessels: beakers, bowls and one bottle:
most of them are dark blue, some few are yellowish green, yellowish brown, olive, and dark purple;
decoration divided into friezes composed of half circles and lines between them, intertwined triangles, and undefined designs (fig. 1: 3-12; 4: 16-19) or, perhaps, elements of the Kufic inscriptions (fig. 1: 13; 4: 14-15).

• Question with regard to connections both in shape and decoration among incised glass, steatite, and clay bowls.

• Discussion about places of manufacturing incised vessels : Egypt, Syria or Mesopotamia.
