• Analysis of 30 glass beads found at al-Basra - preliminary remarks:
– shape: oblate, tubular, segmented and spherical,
– colour: clear, white, yellow, green, blue and black,
– manufacturing techniques: drawing, winding, folding, moulding, or combination of these techniques.
• Analytical methods:
– laser-ablation (LA) coupled to state-of-the-art inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometers (ICP-MS).
• Results of analyses - six basic chemical compositional types:
- lead-silica (PbO:SiO2) glass,
- lead-soda-silica (PbO:Na2O:SiO2) glass,
- lead-silica (PbO:SiO2) glass with high phosphorus and lime,
- soda-lime-silica (Na2O:CaO:SiO2) glass with low aluminium,
- soda-lime-silica (Na2O:CaO:SiO2) glass with high aluminium,
- potash-lime (K2O:CaO) glass.
• Question with regard to the trade between north-west Africa and surrounding regions.
