• Painted bowl from the Treasury of San Marco - some characteristics:
– belived to have been made in Constantinople (10th century);
– made of deep purplish red glass;
– decorated with large medallions containing figures, small medallions containing heads, pseudo-Kufic inscriptions, and arabesques;
– silver-gilt mount with two scrolling handles, each of which is set with a single blue, glass gem;
– gilded and enameled decoration:
- in some places the gilding and the enamel were applied together,
- in the large medallions, details such as musculature and folds in drapery were scratched through (not painted on),
- the pseudo-Kufic inscriptions:
on the inside of the rim: silver stain,
on the wall: at least partly enamel;
– abrasion on the rim, upper wall, and base.
