Manuscript 106 Liturgie from the Bibliothèque patriarcale in Cairo: report on “coction de Saint Chrême” of Myron from 1374 AD (fol. 9r:7): “la préparation du bois des oliviers qu’on brule au cours de ce rituel” (in note 4 the author announces a scientific edition of the manuscript).
The author cites this passage as possible corroboration of the frequent accusation voiced against the Coptic hierarchy said to be burning icons in this ritual. This serves the author as an assumption explaining why there are so few ancient icons; he believes they were destroyed first, because of Muslim persecution, and second because of the Coptic iconoclasm as in 1852 (citing A. Butler, The Ancient Coptic Churches of Egypt, Oxford 1884, 2nd ed. 1970, vol. II, p. 96: “From time to time there seem to have been outbreaks of iconoclastic violence against the pictures in the Churches of Egypt...”).
