CUVIGNY, Hélène
The shrine in the praesidium of Dios (Eastern Desert of Egypt): graffiti and oracles in context
Chiron 40
De Gruyter, 2010, p. 245-283

[180, 220]
(p. 249, repeated p. 277, Figs 6-7-8)
Construction composed of four wooden pegs (6-7 x 3 cm) delimiting a square around a hemispherical hole (see Fig. 8) on top of a shrine podium with altar. Apparently part of a support maintaining a movable vertical object resting in the central hole (Dia. 13 cm). Phase 5 of the ‘aedes’ shrine, dating uncertain, but some time in the late 2nd/early 3rd century AD. Believed to hold up a ‘vexillum’; in Cuvigny’s opinion, legs of a throne of a statue set up on the podium. [note 11: author notes against her idea the smallness of the uprights and also makes note of the contraption being later than the original organization of the podium.
