Teak used for construction and charcoal in large quantities at Berenike; it was obtained most likely from dismantled ships (Vermeeren 2000).
Francis comments on the need for wood as fuel for glassmaking (required high temperature), and the value of this resource (imports, see Bagnall 1993: 42, and high price on every single tree, see Lewis 1986: 145) and states that in view of this it is unlikely that Berenike could have produced its own glass vessels. Beadmakers, on the other hand, could ply their trade.
