Bathhouses in the Countryside of Ottoman Damascus. A Preliminary Enquiry
Dans le monde musulman, les bains publics sont souvent considérés comme un phénomène urbain. Dans la documentation historique, on trouve toutefois un grand nombre de bains de différents types en milieu rural.
Cet article présente les premiers résultats d’une enquête sur les bains publics dans les villages proches de Damas à l’époque ottomane ; il indique leur distribution spatiale, décrit leurs modèles architecturaux et examine ensuite les transactions dont ils font l’objet et les personnes liées à leur gestion. Au XVIIIe siècle, les bains de villages apparaissent ainsi comme des lieux d’investissement pour les élites militaires et bureaucrates ottomanes de Damas.

In the Islamic world, bathhouses are often considered as an urban phenomenon. In the historical record, however, a considerable number of bathhouses of different types are mentioned in rural settings.
This article presents the preliminary results of an investigation on bathhouses in the villages near of Ottoman Damascus. It describes their spatial distribution and architectural models; it also analyzes the transactions concerning them and the persons involved in their management. In the 18th century, village bathhouses seemingly became sites of investment for the Ottoman military and administrative elite from Damascus.
