A Bath from Late Antiquity Discovered in Khirbat al-Maqṣūrah (Ḍumayr, Syria)

The site of Khirbat al-Maqṣūra was first interpreted as a stronghold of the Late Roman Empire but is now usually considered as an Umayyad palace. Excavations conducted in 2009 and 2010 in the southeastern part of the vast square complex confirmed this assumption, by revealing a small thermal building characteristic of this period of transition between Roman baths and hammams. Its construction techniques and architecture (linear plan with retrograde circuit associated with a thermal basilica) and its inclusion in a vast palace complex find parallels in other examples of Umayyad period, especially the Amman Citadel.
