Actuellement, seuls quelques bains ont été identifiés sur le site antique de Pergame (Turquie) : deux thermae dans le Grand Gymnase, un bain près de l’Agora Supérieure et un autre sur les pentes sud près du Diodoreion. Deux autres bâtiments (un dans la partie au sud-est de la ville et un au pied sud de la ville haute), ont été identifiés comme des bains, mais sans fouille. L’une des raisons de ce petit nombre peut tenir au fait que la ville romaine n’a jamais été fouillée. Deux des bains datent du Ier siècle av./ Ier siècle ap. J.-C., les autres du IIe siècle. Presque tous suivent la tradition des premiers bains romains, à l’exception du « Roman Bath » du Grand Gymnase, qui présente de nouvelles inventions et une organisation élaborée ; c’est un phénomène intéressant dans une ville aisée, particulièrement si on compare la situation de Pergame avec celle d’autres villes d’Asie Mineure.

Only a few bath buildings are currently known in ancient Pergamon (modern Turkey): two thermae in the Great Gymnasium, one bath building located near the Upper Agora and a balneum on the southern slope near the Diodoreion. Two other buildings (one in the south-eastern part of the city and the other at the southern foot of the Upper town) were identified as thermae but without further excavation. One reason for this small number may reflect the fact that the Roman city has never been excavated. Two baths are dated back to the 1st century BC/1st century AD, while the others were built in the 2nd century AD. They all follow the tradition of the early Roman baths, except the so-called Roman Bath of the Great Gymnasium, which presents later inventions and an elaborated layout. This phenomenon is interesting in a wealthy city especially when comparing Pergamon with other cities in Asia Minor.
